Hinkie wanted what he thought was BPA. That's definitely fine and good. But I think grabbing the Knicks guy was definitely an added incentive for Hinkie to grab him. At some point, these teams will be battling for spots in the Atlantic (what a thought ha!) and screwing each other in some way should be an incentive.
Not sure why Philly doesn't get as much love from FAs honestly. But the draft is Philly's way to amass talent. So, yes, BPA was the predominant reason for pick IMO.
Well hold up. Do you think the TWolves drafted Towns in part because the Lakers wanted him? The Lakers Russell because the Sixers wanted him? The Knicks Porzingis b/c of the Magic?
Sure, the Sixers are "screwing" you in the sense that they aren't passing on who they think is the best player available, but that's just what the draft is. The Sixers want the best collection of talent, and I guess that technically means that the other 29 teams have less talent, but i don't really think that's at all a concern.
I love New York City, but the this is classic NYC entitlement. Everything is about them.
Also, he's not the Knicks guy, he's the Sixers' guy.
It's not an entitlement at all. I think that is an EXTREME misconception. It is far from all about NYC, trust me.
All I said is, we are in the same conference and screwing a direct competitor is a nice added bonus and probably had (even the slightest) impact on the choice. This is a game of strategy, right? Even if Hinkie's game plan is pretty simple (as you point out collecting best talent, i.e. BPA always), there have to be side incentives is all.
I think Okafor is going to be fantastic and will do a lot of great things in Philly. It's a shame Russell wasn't there, he would have been the better pick for you.
But how you could read entitlement from what I said, I don't get. That is a stretch. Simply saying there are a lot of factors that contribute to a pick and you have to consider who is above, below you, and is available -- but do agree that Okafor was BPA and is why he was selected.
Slight edit to clarify: knicks guy was a reference to fit with Jackson's mission. That's all.
"Screwing a direct competitor" would be something like the Knicks having an RFA and the Sixers offering him the max to force you guys to match. Or, heck, the thing that just came out about the Jrue trade. The Sixers didn't "screw" anyone here, they made a draft pick.
Like you said, the Sixers drafted Okafor because they thought he was the best guy available at that point. Now, I guess in a very meta sense, you make a draft pick to ensure that everyone after you can't make that same draft pick, but that's true of every transaction ever so I'm not sure why it is notable here, or why the Knicks in particular are relevant other than they happen to be the team that picked right after us. There's never been a real rivalry between the two teams, and of all people I wouldn't expect Hinkie to care about something like that anyway. Just like I assume Phil didn't care about whether or not the Magic wanted Porzingis.
