Seems pretty tame. We've seen this whole story before. World famous young NBA super star has played in the same small market for years and wants to try something different.

That Bam extension is awful.

Whether he is worth the contract is immaterial you can find a defensive center like Noel who can do 80 percent of what Bam does for a fraction of the cost. Clint Capela signed a what 5/90 deal. Capela is better at everything else except he doesn't have a 5 foot jumpshot. Is that really worth an extra 110M?

How the heck does he get max money? The heat better hope he develops a 3PT shot and into the star they are paying him as. The players may have different styles but this kind of reminds me of Biyambo. The magic threw money at him because of a post season run instead of trusting what their eyes told them over 82 games..

I don't think you've seen Bam play in a while if you think he plays like Nerlens or Capela. That's how he played as a rookie but he has really expanded his game since then. He averaged 5 assists a game, he's like a borderline point center. I'm not sure what the Biyombo comp is, he didn't just suddenly come on during the playoffs, the guy made the all star team. Easy rookie scale max.

Bam can guard Giannis better than just about anyone else, in addition to being a legit All-Star who played better than Joel did last year, and has advanced on offense and defense to the point of being elite or near to it for the position on both ends in the modern game. He can switch on everything, pass, has a developing jump shot and a super high motor to augment his developing skills and NBA perfect build. Capella is a nice player, Bam is next level stuff. Is he as good as Joel at his Jojo's best? No, but he is more consistent and consistently healthier and for goodness sake it is a rookie max, not a supermax he received.

I, too, think Bam is overrated...in a sense.

There's no doubt that he's improved pretty substantially in some areas. Him developing into a borderline point-center is a pretty surprising and incredible evolution.

Defensively is where I think he's overrated. I view him as a subpar individual defensive cog shined up in a brilliant defensive mind's (Spolestra) system. Bam was a crappy defender at Kentucky. And injured or not, Bam was terrible on defense in the playoffs. Completely exposed in many instances.

Is he worth the contract? Hell no, he's a bigman. He should be making MLE money, at most.

In my eyes, assists are overrated if you’re just getting people the ball without getting them open looks

An average joe can average 10 assists per game, all they got to do is to get some shooter to run off screens and just do a chest pass to the shooter.

It’s the difference between Chris Paul and Jose Calderon or Michael Carter Williams.

On a related note, this is why Im not impressed with Ben’s assists numbers. We’ve watched hundreds of games and we know he’s not breaking the defense and getting shooters open looks. If he does, then why are we still concerned with getting a perimeter go to guy when Ben can make any shooters as go to option down the stretch?

I want to say your last statement is ridiculous but it maybe so right.

I’d say the Heat’s direction is more like the Jazz when they IMO over invested on Gobert.

A team like the Heat is not really after a championship. They just want to be a low floor contender team for decades IMO. And that justifies them of overpaying Bam.

I believe what they’ll do going forward is to build around Bam. Then find 3&D wings or one dimensional shooters like Herro or duncan robinson (there’s like more than 10 guys like these archetype in the draft every year).

And how much of that is BAM versus whose around him? I mean the Heat were overflowing with spot up shooters Herro, Dragic, Duncan Robinson, Leonard, Olynyk, Crowder, etc.

Butler saw a huge increase in his numbers too. Did he develop into a better passer or was he just surrounded by shooters?

Jimmy was a pretty good playmaker for a 2 guard for us too. He played on the ball more for Miami sure, but look at some of his bulls and minny years it’s not that far off. I’m sure everyone benefits from the heat system to some extent but Bam is also not Clint Capela. Like Hassan Whiteside didn’t average 5 assists per game for them.

Say Wiseman looks good early on. Which can really happen with the Warriors system and playing with Steph..

Guys who looked good with the Warriors system last year:
Chriss
Burks
GR3
Wiggins
^ playing at that system can jack up your trade value

I can see them trading Wiseman and Wiggins for Harden

They’d then slide Oubre at SF.

Steph
Harden
Oubre
Marquese
Draymond

Or

Steph
Harden
Oubre
Draymond
Looney

Much more likely if Woods continue to develop and looks to be able to play PF.

Rockets can then play Woods-Wiseman frontcourt. Both looked like skilled, quick and athletic bigs.

Dont laugh now. Rox may bring back the “twin towers”.

How do you guys think the season will turn out? I think it’s impossible to have breakout of Covid with the players not in a bubble.

Personally, i think most guys had or have it right now. Its not like the guys are living or training inside a bubble during the offseason.

I also dont think the bubble was a success. If it’s so, then the upcoming season will be played inside the bubble.

Not sure what you mean by a success but the league accomplished its goals of having a full playoffs without an outbreak. In terms of this coming season the players, coaches and so on don’t want to live in a bubble for 6 to potentially 9 months straight.

Not successful for me:
- teams think heat’s performance was a fluke

There are skeptics around the league who consider Miami’s run to the Finals something of a fluke — the product of the bubble’s strangeness,” Lowe wrote. “There is no question Miami’s militaristic culture steeled the Heat for the isolation and all-basketball, all-the-time environment of the bubble. That environment took a toll on other teams.”
<= zach lowe
- key players like avery bradley and lou will dont want to play so that could lead to their struggle
- high variance during the bubble, some really excelled and some really struggled during that environment

I would just say this goes back to the idea that it was a successful short term solution to wrap up an incomplete season but not something they could do permanently.

I'm sure I could find a dozen quotes from Lowe among others saying that exact thing.

Heat are definitely a fluke. They’ll take a step back. So will Boston and Toronto. #2 seed well within reach.

I don't know about Boston, but Miami was it definitely a fluke. They were a product of the bubble. No team with that many rookies and role players would win any playoff games in any hostile environment.

Warriors are going to feel pretty damn duped once teams start targetting Wiseman on switches and abusing him defensively.

Onyeka Okongwu is going to make them regret taking Wiseman over him.

Its better in terms of “star hunting” than the nets or us (w/o Ben) will offer.

If warriors plan to use him as a trade chip. They can hide him. Let him protect the paint then have the other guys do the extra work.

The timing of Klay going down was bad. If it happened way earlier, they might be shopping that first overall pick so hard that they may have a second star to play with steph right now.
