Which is what I speculated on in my post and I really don't like it. Embiid has already had his meniscus trimmed once, don't think further reducing it is a good long-term move.

Hopefully Nurse gives Maxey some rest as well as he’s been playing huge minutes

Quote from Kyle Neubeck's article
Great question. The answer is no because whatever portion of the meniscus he tore, let’s just say it’s 20% of the meniscus, that meniscus is no longer functional. So whether you leave that in there, and it remains symptomatic, or I do a menisectomy and cut it out, you’ve lost 20% of the function of your meniscus.
Informative article in general.
Basically, their choices were rest/rehab for about 6 weeks, and hope things just improve on their own (the meniscus won't heal but symptoms go away). And if that doesn't work, get the surgery.
Or just jump right to surgery, which has a similar recovery timeframe.
Seems this decision is to make sure he's back and ready to go by the playoffs, so people should probably refrain from trying to throw this season in the trash.

Gotcha. Thanks for the update. 6 weeks should give him enough time to get in shape for the playoffs.youngcrev wrote:Slacktard wrote:

Now is the chance to build something around Embiid and Maxey, and we have the assets to make something happen. Clear the decks and prepare for what will hopefully be a momentous summer.
That's not been decided. They are leaving the door open. They'll need to see inside. a few insiders have said they dont' think this is season ending. Which makes sense, becuase based on the articles this is a 6-8 week recovery. The repair won't be happening. Its poor communication by the Sixers, a repair would be out 3-9 months.

The article I posted earlier says that 98-99 percent of the cases can't be repaired. It needs a blood supply, and can only be repaired if it's on the outer edge. if it isn't it can only be trimmed and it has to be, becuase that part of the meniscus is now useless.
It sucks, but thats the best option for him.

During the scope they can clean out the knee generally as well, tend to any little things that might have been bothering him before the meniscus tear. It is by far the best option. They will keep what they can and remove only what they have to. It's the best call having been through that useless pre-surgery rehab myself, and with Joel they would have ended up doing the surgery eventually anyway and he would have taken even longer to get back in shape.

I think Embiid's return depends on how the team is performing and our roster after the trade deadline. If we don't have a good chance to make it deep into the playoffs, I think he's just going to sit out the season and prepare for the Olympics.
I dont think NBA players values winning the championship as much as the fans do.

Apparently this is their logic...Which I actually get, and don't fault them for. You rest it, but then you come back, and it's bad, then no chance at the playoffs. You cut a little out, you're back in 4 to 6 weeks at worse. It's not out 6 monhts like some are speculating because that's a repair and according the the article 98% of these are unrepairable. Problem is if he gets it done, it could be problems later on in life.
This is why this decision is Embiid's and Embiid's alone. Really, what quality of life does he want in his 40s, 50s, 60s...
Making a short-sighted decision in order to get back to playing quickly is probably not the best course of action long-term.
And yet this is exactly what he has chosen.
He will now be sore, mopey, and out of shape for the playoffs yet again.
And since he won't be back before April, the Sixers will be looking at the play-in. So Boston or Milwaukee in the 1st round.

Without Jo, they will fall to the play in. If they choose to then sit Jo out for the year, that would be fine. I would rather they just shut him down for the season right now and ask him to reconsider the Olympics until '28.

I think this is very true. I also think fans overvalue winning the championship.
In the NBA it's too hard unless you have one of the 1-3 best players in the league AND another top 15 one. Really it takes a lot of luck to get into that situation.
I feel lucky to watch regular season Embiid. This season has been a lot of fun for me to watch the games and I had never harbored expectation of a championship this year.

If it's a transition year or a semi-tank year, I want to acquire some players we can develop, similar to how the Warriors developed Wiggins and Poole. One player I'm considering is Jonathan Isaac; he could alleviate Embiid's defensive responsibilities. The downside is his health, but as they say, beggars can't be choosers.
Another player to consider is Brice Sensabaugh. He just needs playing time, and he's poised to blossom like my previous picks such as Franz Wagner, Walker Kessler, Keegan Murray, and Cam Thomas.
I'm not overly focused on centers; I believe we can address that in the offseason. To begin, Hartenstein is one player who could be signed to a contract similar to Paul Reed's.

They won't make the playoffs if Morey intends to do nothing. Which again, considering they have talent on this roster... Would be stupid as they would kill the flexibility needed to build around Joel and Maxey.
Also the idea that the players care less about the championship than fans is unlikely. Pretty much every player that has chosen to leave a city that adores them and their families are comfortable in for even a chance to win a ring disagrees.
Yes, I'm sure there are some fans that would set themselves on fire to see a title, but they have bigger problems.
But on the realistic level of if Joel would be dedicated to try and get back this year to compete rather than rest through the summer. I'm confident he'd do his best.

I highly doubt that happens. If he can get right and come back they'll do it. No way Jo lets that happen, or the team. His future in the NBA is ticking away. He'll always be injury prone. If the team can get some solid pieces and he can return by late March/early April, they'll probably test their luck. Might not be great for his long term prognosis but I doubt Embiid cares if he can win a chip.
When did u figure that out?and if that's the case he will never be put before Giannis or Jokic
I mean, I doubt he cares about his long term ability to remain elite in the NBA, if he can win a chip this year, with getting the quick surgery.
OK my mistake

Last year the Nets traded Durant at the deadline... the Nets last year (@ trade deadline) had roughly the same amount of wins as the sixers have now and couldn't avoid making the playoffs. No tank on record will keep the sixers from making the playoffs. Worse than this is if by miracle, a lottery pick will be 10-14 at best.
The strategy beings first with how to approach the playoffs this season.

Sitting through the process and watching the sixers mishandle a team with a top 5 talent throughout his career will do that to you. It's nice that we have winning seasons but I want our team parade down broad street while we have this immense once in a generation talent on our team. Or atleast have a legit run at the tittle .
I'm sure Embiid wants a championship but I do believe he values individual stats more right now . He knows he and Maxey are not enough despite what he says. I take what Embiid says out his mouth with a grain of salt. I look at what someone does not what they say.
This organization allows Embiid to stat hunt and go for MVPs with high usage , despite him being one of the most injury prone stars in the league. They are content with ticket sales, and the illusion of hope every season. Harris did what he came to do with the sixers and thats up the value of the team and his own net worth. Embiids presence is a huge part of that and for that they give him free reign to make poor decisions. For example hes looking to play in the Olympics and he can't even stay healthy for a couple months.

Agree, but sadly, fans in all sports (pro and college) have become championship or bust to the point of being miserable and negative throughout a season, never seeming to just enjoy the game itself. I think a lot of this is related to online and workplace 'trash talk' among fans of different teams, and gambling. What else can you think when you see how personally some fans take the performance of 'their' teams, as we see often on here?

If it's a 6-8 recovery period (sounds about right from what I've read), I think you just shut him down, sell what you can at the deadline and regroup for next season. There's no reason to blow it up or anything drastic like that. You don't want a bunch of pieces that don't fit together. Embiid is a top 3 player in the league, Maxey is a great young guard. We knew this season was going to be a step back anyway. Batum, Covington, Bev, and Morris are all old and need to go. Tobias has done his thing here and it's time for him to go too. I love Melton but if he can't stay healthy, we don't need to pay him. Let these guys go and build this back the way we want to. It'll suck raking in the losses, but that's what'll have to happen in order to move forward. This team with Maxey and four bottom tier reserves is as bad as the Detroit Pistons and San Antonio Spurs. Take the losses, and get the draft pick.
