It is only summer league, but it has been obvious that he can play! It will be interesting to see how he does in the regular season against real competition. He is actually the type of player we need. Still not sure on McCain.

He would look really good at the 3/4 right about now.
always a jump shot away.

There are clearly 3-4 players who would have fit here beautifully in positions of need and might have contributed right out of the gate and grown into playoff contributors. Initially I was just pissed that we passed on Knecht, but DaSilva or Filipowski would have been perfect fits as well. I generally trust Morey on identifying draft talent, but he might have blown this one. We shall see.

I feel you. I had Shannon as my top available when we picked.
I think there could be a lot we don't know from behind the scenes. Maybe they saw the free agency market was better for signing wings, making guard a position of need. Maybe Morey feels the pressure of having to play defense against Celtics and other team's made him want a veteran than a rookie.

I'm going to support the McCain pick, but I would have taken Knecht, De Silva, Shannon, DeRon Holmes, and Johnny Furphy over him. Doesn't mean I hate the pick, I just saw it a different way.

Morey drafts like Billy King. He's very good picking #20 to #60. Trades away or messes up high picks.

Actually if you ask me which Center I want for my perfect championship caliber team, I will chose Asik hands down

#16 (in a crappy draft) would be considered a high pick?

I wanted wings only in the draft but my read is that the scouts had McCain rated highly as an upside play. Da Silva is what he is going to be, so if you are looking at this year's 1st rounder as trade fodder the younger guy with pedigree and upside likely has more value if you don't see the wing being meaningfully in the playoff rotation.

The problem is why a guy like Jared McCain whose highest upside would be Tyus Jones or TJ should be regarded as a prospect with high potential ?

Just curious if in McCain's first two years he gives you something like 15-20 minutes a night and had the following stats:
8-10 pts/2-3rbs/3assists - shooting about 36% from 3 on 3 attempts a game. Is that pick a bust?

Tough to say if it's a bust. If McCain gives us those numbers, I'd be happy because it would be about as good as I would hope to get from him. But if players drafted after him that we passed on, especially at positions where we still have a need, are delivering nice numbers and are solid rotation players on contending teams? That changes the perception a bit.

The reason I asked was because those were Brunson's numbers his first two seasons after coming out of college at age 22 with 4 yrs of tutelage under Jay Wright. Some of his biggest detractors were lack of height and athleticism. I'm not singling you out; but more so just pointing out that it's way too early for any of us to declare McCain a bust or wasted pick. When Dallas picked Brunson he was seen as at best a 2nd unit guard.

I mean, you can project the best possible outcome for any rookie right now if you wanted to. All people are speaking about is what they see currently. That doesn’t necessarily mean the kid is doomed or anything but it’s not super encouraging.

Shannon was my guy too but willing to give McCain a shot even though I'm iffy. He did look more comfortable last game tho

I think you missed my point. When Jalen played summer league he scored 6 pts; shot 22% from the field; 30% from 3 and had 3 TO's a game. Again, that was Brunson at age 22 after 4 years in college. He struggled to perform as a lead guard in summer league despite having years of experience running the acclaimed Nova team's offense as its floor general.
Not every player stands out right away, is all I'm saying. Folks on these boards declaring him a bust, not an nba caliber bench player, or a bad pick; well, it's just too early to tell.

In Kevin O'Connor's podcast, he mentioned that McCain's jersey is one of the top three best-selling among rookies. The atmosphere around him in the summer league feels like having a celebrity on the court, as he garners a lot of cheers and followers for his off-court activities more than his game. This likely explains why TV often highlights his 3.5 million followers.

Re: **Official Summer League 2024 Thread**
What I don't understand is, even if Jared McCain exceeds his projections, I don't see his size allowing him to be a starter. So why would we use our 16th pick on a backup player?
Or am I wrong to think he can't start if he becomes better than projected?
The best explanation I can convince myself is he’s a back-up if Maxey misses time or if Maxey has an off game.

That's far from a bust. A bust looks more like Alex Sarr right now: a prospect with high expectations who doesn't seem to be looking like a NBA-caliber player.
After rooting for several busts in my younger days, I've come to define a bust as a player who's not good enough to compete at the NBA level. These are often highly touted prospects drafted for their potential, but who fail to become contributors in the NBA even after several years.
