Re: Summer 2019 Free Agency Thread
Korkmaz is more of a scorer that can hit shots than a pure shooter. So if he's not playing on the ball, you're really not utilizing him properly. If Brett Brown didn't even know how to properly utilize seasoned vet Tobias Harris, I wouldn't expect him to know what he has in Furkan Korkmaz.

Sure, but there's only one ball, and that's where Jimmy Butler, Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid are also at their best. Korkmaz may be at his best on ball, but he's not good enough on ball to get that opportunity. Tobias also has to sacrifice in that department.

I think Korkmaz is good enough to get opportunities, he's just not privileged with the proper status to be granted them.
To me, it makes a hell of a lot more sense for guys like Harris and Korkmaz to play on the ball than Ben Simmons.

I don't disagree in the abstract but I do think team construction needs to be taken into account. Even accepting your description of Simmons as a super glue guy (which I think is not that off), look at the Warriors. Doesn't having a guy like Green make more sense to act as the super glue guy instead of another guy usage heavy player?
Obviously the rest of our team is not the Warriors but the point is more that you need to look at the overall makeup of the team. If your backup player is going to be playing with four ball dominant players at some point you want someone who compliments them and not simply become redundant of them.

Re: Summer 2019 Free Agency Thread
I'm assuming Pat Beverly and Danny Green will be out of our price range this summer... so is it time to discuss Avery "Advanced stats poison" Bradley again?
Pretty much every advanced statistic points against this guy being deserving of his defensive reputation... yet the eye test can't be THAT wrong, right? The argument I've seen for this is that while he's a great on ball defender, he's undersized at the 2 and that lack of length doesn't bode well for his help/off ball defense.
So what happens if you put him in our unique situation where he's strictly defending the point of attack (something that was probably this teams biggest defensive weakness during the regular season)?
Would you say damn the stats and make him an offer? Or is he what the numbers say he is?

I'd rather look at both of the Pacers FA PGs as the fallback option.

I probably would as well, though I'd probably consider him a similar level addition to CoJo. Less ball skills, better shooter (though Joseph's defensive rep actually comes with some statistical backing). I go back and forth on Collison. His skill set would add a new dimension to our offense, but he'd potentially be a liability on defense as a switch target. I'm also not sure what his market will look like. He might be able to get a more money elsewhere, and definitely greater opportunity.

I'm more concerned with how we get a decent backup center without using the MLE there (would prefer that on a guard/wing). I guess you just wait for the musical chairs to stop and see what veteran center was left without a seat.

Re: Summer 2019 Free Agency Thread
I have a question, can we afford to get back Jimmy, Tobias, Redick? I know we will be in luxury tax, and more so in 2020/21 when Simmons max will take place.
But, can we have Jimmy, Tobias (even for max), and Redick for like 10M?
What will happen then? Will we only have MLE left? And minimums?

It gets complicated because of the apron (http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q20). But basically we would have the MLE, the BAE (about $3.7 million), minimum contracts and a $2.7 million trade exception from the Fultz trade. But it's not really possible to use all of them because of the apron.

Can Boban play next season? I just watched john wick 3 and i saw him hurt badly. Dont see how he can still play after that beating
There’s never been a time in history when we look back and say that the people who were censoring free speech were the good guys.

I saw you weren’t the biggest fan of John Wick movies, c’mon man!!
Not a lot of CGI, I’m old, so growing up in the late 70’s to 80’s, the explosions were real, everything wasn’t graphics. John Wick, has murder, mayhem, chases, and cool cars, the cars are what make Fast and the Furious movies cool.
The only thing it’s missing is gratuitous nudity. But then again, I’m still a fan of wrestling, so what do I know.

But I don't think our team construction makes any sense. I'm trying to pivot away from whatever it is that we're doing before we lock into everyone longterm. We have a fringe-MVP big so that's the building block. I think everything else has to make sense with that. I don't think Ben makes any sense. I don't even think Jimmy makes sense. I think any ball handler we have has to be able to score from multiple levels and space off the ball when asked.
I believe that Korkmaz (much like Tobias Harris) is a player that functions best when he's playing on and off the ball in a free flowing offense. I think his game gets stunted when you're solely using him as a spacer. It's no surprise that Tobias's excellent three point shooting dipped as soon as he came to Philly. Because he was playing less on the ball and doing less creating and he wasn't establishing flow or rhythm. Well it's a similar thing with Korkmaz.

Yeah. I'm still not opposed to using the MLE on Dedmon since he's one of the only guys out there that can both stretch the floor and protect the rim, but there should be plenty of options available for less (and he's another guy that would probably get more money/opportunity elsewhere). Nerlens, O'Quinn, R Lopez, WCS, Chandler, Davis, McGee, Baynes... Plenty of decent defensive backup 5s out there. Maybe you even look at guys that are more traditional 4s that can play the position like Vonleh, Portis, Taj Gibson or Markief

I'm not sure if he would count against our exceptions or still be on rookie scale, but Euro stash Vasilije Micic has generated some buzz lately, leading Anadolu Efes to the Euroleague championship game. Ettore Messina - assistant coach of the Spurs - has been talking him up to Pop and saying Micic is an NBA player. His stats look pretty good. Even if he's not a fit for us, he's becoming an asset.

Yes if Simmons is going to be a glue guy (that is if he cant create his offense) he doesnt really have a place here as long as Embiid is the best player. At least if he could become more dominant offensively we could hope to overwhelm the other teams with talent even if the fit wouldnt be there.
The team is at a crossroads and really need to evaluate our personnel and how they expect them to perform in the next 3-4 years, particularly the Embiid, Simmons, Butler trio. Embiid's future health, Simmons realistic ceiling and Butler's decline are the 3 things they should decide on and act accordingly. Unfortunately i dont really trust our FO to do that.

I'm not going to argue that our core players are the perfect fit with each other. Clearly they are not. But until something changes non that front or there is at least discussion of that out there, I still think we are better prioritizing bench players that fit with what we've got and not what we wish we had. To me, that is a preference for defensive players who can hit an open shot over guys that can create their own.

The direction you're talking about is the realistic one and what we'll probably end up doing.
I just can't help but be pessimistic about our chances to ever truly compete for a championship with the core group we've identified.

According to Bodner they'd either need to use cap space or an exemption to sign him.

I'm not really optimistic either that this core will win a title but I'm taking more of a wait and see approach for a couple reasons. First, is that you still hope to see some natural improvement from Joel and Ben. Second, the team clearly suffered from not playing together a lot. There were just so many times when we turned it over because a guy cut when his teammate thought he would flare or where the timing was just off.
Third, I hope Brown rethinks the rotations over the offseason. He always paired Harris and Butler together and then Embiid, Ben and Redick together. I understand why he did (or why I think he did). The guys who have been here have some chemistry with each other so he wanted to keep them together whereas Harris and Butler had chemistry with no one so might as well keep them together. With an offseason to work together and rework the bench, I'm hoping he creates three units: (1) starters; (2) the Joel unit where he is paired with Jimmy and it is PnR heavy with Butler as the lead ballhandler; and (3) the Ben unit that tries to mimic how the Bucks play with basically Ben and four shooters (Harris, Redick, hopefully someone like Beverley or George Hill, etc).
