A few observations:

1) Guys seem to overvalue Sixers and ex-Sixers (assuming picks are in order);

2) In most cases, guys went offense ahead of defense.

Halfway through the first go-round with the 24 teams.

Tom, Ignore free agency and contracts when judging.

I'll try to go through a chunk of this tonight. Between the Sixers sale, all the Iguodala rumors, and DraftExpress work, it's hard to find a few extra mins. Promise I'll try.

My observations:

First a question: Are we judging the teams against one another as in "this is the new NBA, who's the championship contenders/next 5 years in this new NBA?" Or are we comparing the teams that are built against current NBA teams and how they would fair in real life?

1. When judging championship contenders, I did a mock playoff starting in the 2nd round. I tried to think about who, in my opinion, would win a 7 game series. I gave my eventual champion 30 pts, my runner up 25 pts, my conference finalists who didn't win 20 pts, 2nd round teams 15 pts, first round teams 10 pts, and 5 pts for non-playoff teams. I'd love to know how other judges are handling it though.

For future category, I went with a simple 5 pts for teams that won't be contenders over the next 5 seasons, 10 for teams that will contend but will need retooling, and 15 for teams that will contend without major changes for the next 5 years.

For fit, I went with a breakdown of positional fits. So, if you have a PG-SG combo that works well, you automatically get 1 point. Same thing for SG-SF, SF-PF, PF-C. That's 4 total points. Then if all 5 were a good fit, I made it 5 points. I took subs into account as well, but mainly focused on starters.

I'm finding my results are a few tied scores because of keeping the numbers rounded. Is that okay with everyone or would you like no ties at all?

You can have ties. We will likely be summing up all of the judges results.
Also, assume this is a brand new league. Current teams and contracts do not apply.

As for your approach, it is sort of unique. The initial intention was to have the 0-30 scale based on how good a team is right now. It sounds like your ranking roughly does this.

The future part sounds about right. It measures how well a team will hold up or improve over the coming 5 years. And the 5 pt chemistry score is sort of self explanatory.

If anything, I think you might be being too scientific. I'd probably just look at all of the teams and then go back and score each one based on your general impression. But I don't have a problem with your way.

Yeah, judges. Just get them in as quickly as possible, but don't stress if you can't find the time.

It was sort of the very definition of a passive aggressive post :)

A-holes

My point was, if you don't have time, don't feel the need to get it done by Friday. Because if you can't, you can't. But still, try to do it when you have time...don't put it off.

Hopefully that makes more sense, lol.

I initially wasn't going to say anything- but it was funny how everyone noticed it.

Anyhow, my emails to the judges have been pretty similar.

The Milwaukee Bucks:

PG: Lowry: 36 -42 minutes, Pargo/ Ivey 5-12minutes (alternate)
SG: Gordon 28-35 minutes, Wafer 5-15 minutes, Mason 5-15 minutes
SF: Johnson 30 minutes, Thornton 20-30 Minutes, Outlaw 15-25 minutes
PF: Duncan 35 minutes, Gooden 15-25 minutes, Smith 5-15 minutes
C: Favors 35 minutes, Thabeet: 0-15 minutes, Petro: 0-10 minutes

Offense

The offensive plays are mostly built on the perimeter and runs through Duncan in the post. Even at his age, he plays that role better than almost any frontcourt player. Duncan will get the ball to Lowry, who last year showed me he is ready to be a top 10-point guard. His size allows him to penetrate and his outside shooting improved greatly, something he should continue to improve. Ben Gordon will go back to the role he played in Chicago, when he played in a set offense and was able to penetrate and shoot. For the forwards, Wes Johnson plays what is his natural position small forward. While he wasn't great in his first year, he did show that he could shoot, so he will stay out on the perimeter, and find open shots. At Center, Favors will position himself to get offensive boards from Gordon and Lowry’s penetration.

The bench will play a vital role in keeping up the offensive production and energy. The main three guys to come off the bench are Gooden, Thornton, and Outlaw. Gooden is versatile because he can score inside and out side. Thornton and Outlaw can both come in and speed up the tempo of the game and they both are hybrid. Outlaw again will play out on the perimeter and primarily be a shooter. Thornton will try to have that crash style ala Gerald Wallace.

Other players like Wafer and Mason will be perimeter shooters. Craig Smith will do what he does and go after offensive boards and get points Thabeet will be the biggest project on the team. The hope is being around some veteran frontcourt players, he will realize some of his potential.

Defense.

In the backcourt it is a mixed bag. On one hand, Lowry is a very good defender for a point guard. His size and tenacity make it hard for opposing player to lose him. On the other hand, Ben Gordon isn’t a good defender for a shooting guard. He’s small and doesn’t give full effort. So he will be used in spots and be watched anytime he’s getting beat too bad, he’ll be taken out. The team though will play in a zone defense and this will hopefully hide Gordon’s defense. Johnson’s size and length allows him to be an effective defender at the sg or sf position. The frontcourt is big and can rebound and block shots. More than likely, Duncan will move to Center on defense, and Favors will play power forward.

Duncan and Favors size will make it tough for even the biggest superstar to drive to the basket. This team has some very big player at the forward and center position so this mentality should continue for the bench. Plus with Duncan's experience on defense, he will work like an on the floor coach

Brian Ward (of Depressedfan.com) has sent me his judging results. I'm going to IM it to PK5 and he can start a new thread. And Brian did not pull any punches :)

Where shall I send results? Just going over them one more time.

Can PM them to tk76, if that'd work.

Have my three scores per team and total.

Thanks, Tom
