Well, this press conference is depressing. Darkest thoughts on this issue entered my mind for the first time.

Synopsis of what Hinkie said at today's presser:

-March CT-Scan looked perfect, so they had Embiid ramp up activities
-He was playing completely pain free doing fairly strenuous activities
-Recent CT-Scan, which was purely routine, "just looked different" than the March CT
-Activities halted, and they have been seeking opinions nation-wide and world-wide
-Recently met with a surgeon in NY, getting another opinion soon from a guy in Carolina
-Surgery not ruled out
-Embiid feels physically amazing, and is confused that things have halted like this

Edit, some add-ons:

-Hinkie says it's fair to characterize it as a "setback"
-"We knew what we knew" about Embiid's health when taking Okafor
-Summer league definitely out for Embiid
-Decision will be made pretty soon (after visit to Carolina doc?)

We at least have Okafor and Noel. We just have to view Joel playing as a bonus.

Joel still might be okay though. We'll see.

Also, it sounded like Embiid's health was a factor in deciding to take Okafor. Hinkie said something like "I really hope that we would have had the courage to still take him [if Embiid's health weren't in question]."

It's a shame given the circumstances, but I'm much more at ease moving forward with the Okafor pick since it sounds like Embiid's situation is unclear, and frankly not promising. I was convinced of smokescreen, and now it appears the concerns are real.

Luckily we have a center that could average close to 20 ppg next year. That's how good his offensive game is in my mind. Him and Nerlens will be super fun to watch together since his defensive lapses should be covered by Noel.

I am really high on Covington and think he could be a long term answer at the 3 (I might be one of the few), but I really wish we traded up and got a PG or SG that can get to the rim. It's a long offseason, but hopefully we will grab someone promising in the next few weeks via trade or FA. Hey, we got Wroten in Hinkie's first year and Covington in his second. Maybe we can expect someone worthwhile in his third.

Well Okafor and Noel should be really fun to watch. Thought this was an overreaction but I was wrong. Thank god Jah fell to us, I guess lol

Well, thank God it's now more clear and the twisted-logic fights can end for awhile.

It's all a smokescreen.... Or that's what I've told.

Do you guys think he has the courage to do it if Embiid was totally healthy? For arguments sake lets say Embiid came back after 6 months last year and is a beast with Noel. Does he really take Jahlil with the third pick I doubt it. We probably wouldn't have even been in a position to take Jahlil.

The way Hinkie phrased it, I think that was a very open way of saying that he wouldn't have taken Okafor without the Embiid injury/setback. I was actually shocked by its frankness.

No idea what would have happened if Embiid was healthy enough to play last year.

Morey and Hinkie are of the school of thought that says you need to take risks to increase your chances at greatness. Noel and Joel were risks when grabbed or we wouldn't have gotten them. Had Embiid already been back and fully playing/healed now, that might be when you don't take the safe pick that could require a trade later, but you take the risk then and pick Porzingis.

In a way he acknowledged that the risk is still present in Embiid so they went with the guy who was the safest BPA in Okafor.

From people I have talked to about the Embiid injury with backgrounds in ortho medicine, it sounds like the issue is with the fracture never closing fully, hence as he put more and more pressure on it the 'changes' were seen on the scan. There are a number of options to promote bone growth and further healing, the kind necessary to establish a completely stable platform in his foot going forward and from the sounds of it, they want to explore all of those. Surgery is merely one option. I don't see this as a doomsday scenario for Embiid, but timing wise it will be a setback. More concerning than this injury itself is whether his entire skeletal frame is going to be prone to these things, or on the glass half full side of things, does more time to heal this allow him to mature skeletally to a point where those problems won't recur.

Hinkie is seen as a deceitful sort of devil because he is so secretive about moves they are going to make, but in many ways he is bluntly honest whenever he speaks. Last year's presser had him outright saying that the reason to gather so many picks and assets is that in all probability, and the an lives on probability, some of them will fail for one reason or another. It is why he is such a proponent of optionality, because it allows you to take risks and to mitigate against the negative outcomes of those risks at the same time.

Exactly. Embiid is pure icing, at this point. Okafor is the flour, Noel is the eggs.

Wroten is a cracked piece of egg shell or a strand of pet hair that falls into the batter.

Nah, Embiid is the steak. Noel is the string beans and Okafor is the mashed taters. We need to finish our meal before we get desert.

So we're running Okafor/Noel/Covington/Thompson/Wroten for the time being? With a bench of... Aldemir and Grant and I have no idea who else? McRae has to be coming back to the states now, right?

Wroten will be out for some time I'm guessing. Shouldn't be the entire year though, heard it was a partial tear.
