Maybe I'm reaching, but I find the commentary too often cynical and like they are trying to put themselves over instead of putting the product over. Kenny seemed very condescending and "above it" last night, to me. Even something as small as dissing Jae'Sean Tate and his pass attempts and saying "he ain't a passer, he's a scorer, no wonder they only have 13 wins." He's just burying the Rockets for no reason and giving a garbage scouting report on Tate. Tate is a really good playmaker/passer and not much of a scorer. It's like Kenny just says negative stuff for twitter likes and not really helping the product.

The best part of the whole event was Pacal Siakam cosplaying 2000s Shaq with a camcorder.

Do stars not do the dunk contest any more because they feel like a poor showing might hurt their legacy? It certainly couldn't be because of fear of injury, right?

I think it’s a combo of a few things:
1. Lebron set the precedent and avoided it because the hype was too much to live up to
2. The contest got very corny with props & costumes
3. Superstars don’t wanna lose on national TV to a scrub like McClung

A lot of it is an ego thing. Stars don't want to be judged, they want to be praised.

Stars have no problem entering the 3 Point Contest every year. Which is why that's the true main event that should be showcased. Because that's an objective contest. Dunk Contest is too subjective for a star's ego to handle.

They should bring back HORSE with the stars. I'd also do a 3v3 tournament too. Would likely encourage them to play harder.

Your logic here is backwards. A star would much rather fail at a subjective contest than an objective one. How's Kevin Huerter's ego doing today? He can't even blame the judges.

Stars are much more likely to be given good scores by judges than non-stars. They would have an overwhelming advantage.

I do agree with this, however.

Nah, I think stars want to participate in contests where their performance determines the outcome and is not up for interpretation.

Losing the dunk contest probably has marketing implications for stars they're not willing to take. The entire narrative around Lebron's athleticism could have been challenged, fairly or not, if he lost the dunk contest against a guy like McClung.

Same goes for guys like Ja.

Sadly, is the savvy marketing decision for them. The league should find a way to make them enter the contest tho

You might be on to something. But have average Joe's compete. All year long your average joe's submit their video entries of them hitting long shots. They do an elimination round and 2 get to go to the all start game and shoot it out with the best of the best. Make the prize money a million. Start it out with everyone shooting 3 shots from the free throw line eliminate those that don't make 3-3 then move it back. 3 more shots each eliminate the lowest score, move it back eliminate the lowest score etc.

Or have the guys use a springboard or trampoline to execute a dunk but have another player who is also using a springboard or trampoline try and block the dunk. The dunks would be amazing and the mid air collisions would be amazing too. Probably won't happen but I bet people would tune in to see that. :D

Wouldn't matter. Glenn probably wouldn't play him anyway.

Embiid and Dame talking in the shootaround. And Embiid had his shirt covering his mouth so the camera couldn't see the words he was mouthing.
