AND OF COURSE TREVOR ARIZA!

They would have been good for many years now if Yao was ever healthy. I'll believe he's healthy when I see it. With that said, if he can actually stay healthy they are a serious contender. And yes, Trevor Ariza is a 4th or 5th option that can "lead" a team to a "chip." LOL

Agreed. Unfortunately, the lack of updates are probably due to the lack of things worth updating.

Perhaps we won't hear anything until pre-season?

cheolee wrote:Ariza is definitely a better defender because his combination of length and athleticism at his position is elite. However, Chase was a rookie last year and it is typical for 1st year players to have growing pains on defense. With the touch-fouls that are being called in the league these days, I would argue that perimeter defense is overrated. The Rox had Battier, Jeffries, Ariza, Lowry, and Hayes who are all considered premier defenders, but without the big clog in the middle (Yao), their defense was very porous.
My point is that great individual perimeter defense is not as important as some people think, and a shot altering big can usually compensate for that if need be.

I would say your knowledge of basketball is limited or you were just kidding with that statement. Why do coaches stress on all levels from youth basketball to the NBA to the Olympics to stop the ball? Why do you learn to yell out "ball, ball" when you are the person picking up the ballhandler on a break? The reason for the layup lines the Sixers experienced last year was a product of poor perimeter defense just as much as it was for lack of an interior defender when Dalembert was out.

Chuck Hayes is a C/PF, who rarely guards people on the perimeter. He is very good at denying people position down low though. Houston was 21st in scoring defense, the Sixers were 19th. In FG% they let opponents shoot 47.5%, higher than the Sixers. Of those players you mentioned I would say only Battier is an elite defender. Even Hayes, when pinned on your back, is at the offensive player's mercy, being only 6'6".

As to being an elite defender - If Ariza was an elite perimeter defender Phil Jackson wouldn't have let him get away. Instead Jackson went out and got an elite perimeter defender in Artest, so that he could match up against the Lebrons and Pierces of the league.

Why i would have taken Artest. Better perimeter defender and a better 3 point shooter.

cheolee wrote:What kind of player do you think will fit next to Turner and Jrue?

imho, I would think that the player ideally:

-play well off the ball
-a good catch and shoot guy with a strong 3point shot
-young and on a rookie contract
-athletic and has the physical tools to be a good defender
-high bball IQ
-has enough potential to expand his game
-good character and work ethic

If these are the qualities that the PHI is looking for in their future SF, I think Chase Budinger is a better fit than Ariza.

I agree

ok, before anyone gets the wrong impression, im not trolling with this post

Heres what I know , yes Budinger is better than Ariza. But Id hate to see him go. I even try to convince people on forums that Ariza is better but Im lieing, he isnt .

I also try to make it that Hill has talent to be a stud, Im lieing there also. He has a bball iq of 0.

Patterson is better, but I wont admit to that until now.

Now, its all irrelevant because Iggy is not on the block ,and Im not sure why Houston was even the target.

Does collins like ariza? I know collins is a huge laker fan from his commenting, I hear he likes battier, ariza, now budinger...Thats 3 small forwards.

Well, I would love to have iggy. Im sorry for trolling and saying iggy is overrated. He isnt. He isnt overpaid either.

I do know one thing, Morey loves our players, and wont get raped in a deal. I know Philly also doesnt want to get raped. Its always hard to please both sides.

If you guys studied our summer league games you should want Patterson not Hill. You should know Battier is washed up and Ariza is very good but not on iggys level. ariza did help lakers win a title, but rockets and philly dont have kobe.

I think turner and iggy can play together well. Kevin Martin is a sg,so is Turner. I think the only reason iggy was talked about is not basketball but more $$$ over the cap and maybe your owner wants to save some money since you guys wont compete this year. But ,then again the east is wide open so maybe you can make playoffs.

So if anything goes down its trade deadline. Just to let you know, the rockets are chasing chris paul, then granger, then amare, then iggy. Iggy is last. I say Amare because he admitted last week at summer league we are still recruiting him just in case he wants out of Knicks at deadline if they suck ,rockets want to be on his "list".

good luck. yao is always injured so i lied when i said we are 4 seed. we will be lucky to make playoffs.

you guys beat us last year and you can beat us this year. peace

not true. when artest was trying to guard Roy, Roy went off for 40 and we switched battier on him. artest was very slow. the reason he appears to have good D on lakers is because every player is so long that artest can roam.

he is a better 3 pt shooter but is a major headcase. the rockets didnt release what went on. he was a trouble maker on the bus,in practice, with tmac, with rafer.

no one liked him except yao.

ariza is like 6 years younger, and artest wanted 10+mil per year to stay with rockets. rockets made the wise decision .

in fact laker, fans were wanting ariza back even in finals until game 7 when artest finally had a good game.

We agree.... Ariza is hardly making any of the users here do cartwheels through their living room withe a trade for Iguodla.

I also try to make it that Hill has talent to be a stud, Im lieing there also. He has a bball iq of .Patterson is better, but I wont admit to that until now.

I think Hill settles some of us down from like boiling point to lightly boiling. I personally would go all out on a simmer and slowly cool off of we can get Patterson back in the deal....With either Budinger or Trevor Ariza. At this point you can pick which one you have to pick. I like Chase a bit more but i'm fine with Ariza... We can kick down an expiring Kapono contract for you guys as well.

Now, its all irrelevant because Iggy is not on the block ,and Im not sure why Houston was even the target.

We had fielded calls on Iguodala... Houston, LA Clips, and the TWolves were the ones I heard about.
So far all signs point to us just keeping him here in this new environment we our creating and see how he does.

Does collins like ariza? I know collins is a huge laker fan from his commenting, I hear he likes battier, ariza, now budinger...Thats 3 small forwards.

Yes Collins likes Ariza... The Sixer organization said that they liked him as a player. Whats not to like about Shane Battier??? and Budinger is an upcoming shooter.... Dirk Nowitzki as a small forward i'm thinking.

Well, I would love to have iggy. Im sorry for trolling and saying iggy is overrated. He isnt. He isnt overpaid either.

It's all good.... It's easy to do to a player when they arent perfect all the time on the job. I personally think he might be a bit underrated because I think he is the third best overall defender at the small forward position behind Lebron James, and Ron Artest in the NBA. He can score too, and lead a team if he has to. We have a valuable piece to the puzzle with him and it would be wise to field offers from other teams but in my opinion it has got to be something we can't say no too.

I do know one thing, Morey loves our players, and wont get raped in a deal. I know Philly also doesnt want to get raped. Its always hard to please both sides.

Exactly... You have two teams that are pretty much going for win now type of improvement. Trades between teams like that with major pieces involved usually strike out.

I think Turner and Iguodala can play together as well. If Kevin Martin and Iguodala can play together we should be fine with Turner back there.

good luck. yao is always injured so i lied when i said we are 4 seed. we will be lucky to make playoffs.

If Yao stays healthy and returns to form there is no reason you guys shouldn't make it back into the playoffs. Houston and Golden State are my two surprise teams out west next year with the Clippers making noise as well. Utah regrouped with Jefferson but was out of desperation, Phoenix regrouped with Turkoglu out of desperation as well, and Denver is in troube... I don't care if they signed Al Harrington to help with scoring.
The only mainstays I see are
1.Lakers
2. Thunder
3. SanAntonio (Splitter will be big for them and your never out of it with Duncan/Ginobili)
4. Portland (This is their year I think for a major push with a healthy team)
5. Mavs (They have done their best to build onto an already dangerous team.
I think Houston or Golden State run off two of the three teams from last year. If I had to guess early it would be Utah and Denver.

Dearest Lapinski,

I'm sure that my basketball knowledge may not be as extensive as many people on this board; maybe that includes you too. Based on your post, however, I can assure you that my reading comprehension is superior to yours. Rather than wasting my time knit-picking your entire post, I'll just pick out one from each paragraph.

Lapinski wrote:Why do you learn to yell out "ball, ball" when you are the person picking up the ballhandler on a break?
 That's called transition defense. It has more to do with team effort and commitment than what we would traditionally refer to as perimeter defense. Also, what does yelling "ball ball" have to do with guarding anyone. To me, it just says that you have good eye-to-mouth communication/coordination. My whole point was that interior defense>perimeter defense in terms of importance with the current handcheck rules. I didn't think that this elementary fact could be argued.

Lapinski wrote:Of those players you mentioned I would say only Battier is an elite defender.
Battier, Jeffries, Hayes, Lowry, and Ariza are great individual defenders but for different reasons. Battier because of his fundamentals and discipline; Jeffries because his versatility to guard positions 1-4; Hayes because of his strength/agility/quick hands; Lowry because of his bulldog mentality; and Ariza because of his length. Ofcourse these players have weaknesses defensively and problems with certain matchups. If they didn't, they would all be prime KG/Pippen. Think of it this way: the ppg sum of all 5 players might give you 40-45points, and 1/3 of that is coming from Ariza alone. Wouldn't you think that there must be a reason these offensively challenged players are not only still in the NBA but were valuable contributers to a .500+ team? As you've mentioned, the Rox defense was not very good last year. Why? Because with the exception of Hayes, they are all PERIMETER DEFENDERS! When Hayes was in the lineup last year the Rox were significantly better, but the problem was that his minimal contributions on the offensive end limited his minutes. He also played with a nagging injury for most of the year.

Lapinski wrote:If Ariza was an elite perimeter defender Phil Jackson wouldn't have let him get away. Instead Jackson went out and got an elite perimeter defender in Artest, so that he could match up against the Lebrons and Pierces of the league.
You partially answered your own question. Artest is a better matchup vs Lebron/Pierce/Melo. Ariza is better against Kobe/Roy/Wade. Which of these would you expect to have a better chance at seeing deep in the playoffs? Which of these does Kobe have a hard time guarding? I cannot presume to know what goes through Phil Jackson's mind so I will not speculate on that but I do know that both players made important contributions to their respective championship teams, especially on the defensive end. You might argue that the Lakers defense had more to do with their three ~7footers. Wait, that's right. It's the length of the Lakers interior defense that so hard to matchup with...

To conclude my rambling, I will have to declare you, Lapinski, the winner because I just wasted 20 minutes trying to explain to you your errors.

Kapono for a 3rd center is probably the safest move. As much as I don't want to trad Thad, if they could pull a Kapono/Thad for Jordan deal, Ik would be ecstatic.

So we take a SF who has already performed and trade him for a center who hasn't - a lottery pick for a 2nd rounder. Man, that's harsh. And if the Clippers were willing, Sixers probably would do it. Sad.

Disagree. I don't like Jordan much at all. I don't have confidence he'll reach his potential as anything more than a rebounder off the bench.

When you have to compete long term against d.Howard having a 'like'body to defend him is something worth considering. Agree he may not fulfill his potential but I think the risk is worth the price.
