The whole thing was fake, I was always against Simmons, from drafting him to anything that was about him.

And low and behold, they're 2-1 in those games with just a tough loss to the elite 76ers holding them back from being undefeated. It's no secret that an aggressive Haliburton is the key to them actually winning basketball games. The problem is, far too often, he's passive and deferential by nature. Catching Pacers games on any kind of scheduled basis will show that Mathurin is far and away their alpha engine. Need to see Haliburton sustain the aggressive attacking nature.
They are 30-37 and with Haliburton injured went on a 1-10 run.
The reality is, if Haliburton doesn't get injured the Pacers probably have a winning record and hover around 6-8 in the standings.
Mathurin can score but he's below average efficiency and his 3% is bad for the volume of shots he takes. He's obviously gonna improve as he's a rookie, but he's not conducting the team to wins as Haliburton is
Haliburton plays like a tertiary banana type 90% of the time, though. To be the #1 option, you have to be able to exert pressure on defenses and draw fouls.
If you watch the social dynamic of Haliburton when he's next to De'Aaron Fox or Bennedict Mathurin, he submits to them.

Haliburton averages more points than Mathurin even per 100. Does Mathurin shots more? yes, that's a detriment if he's innefficient anyway.
I don't understand why he should average that many points or take that many shots to be "alpha" anyways, pure PGs are scoring engines, yes, that doesn't mean they have to do the big scoring. Chris Paul, just one example, averaged over 20 pts only 3 season in his careers

I don't expect Atlanta or Golden State to do us any favors tonight, but it'd be nice..

Yikes, Mikal Bridges had 24 field goal attempts and only 1 assist. I thought Cam Thomas was the selfish one!

In a 2014 re-draft, what percentage of teams would take Jokic over Embiid #1.
We know that 100% of sports writers take Jokic. But real basketball people's preference interests me.

It'd be a very legit reason to take Jokic if you consider the longevity of both players. You also have two lost seasons of Embiid in the beginning (which can arguably be considered a positive for Embiid since that yielded us Simmons).
Purely on the way they play, I'm biased. You can't really go wrong with either, but Embiid, when locked in, is a better player on both ends.

Ridiculous triple double by Jokic....
... in a loss to the third worst team in the league. That's my MVP.

Im sure people have seen the video going around of Jokic getting lit up by the Spurs. I don’t get why he never gets called out for being lazy the way Embiid does sometimes. Like he picks his spots to get rebounds, blocks and steals so his metrics are good but possession to possession the effort is not always there.

I'm certain it's because of the advanced metrics. It's hard to criticize someone's defense if they're top 5 all time in defensive box plus minus. They would have to have a serious conversation about the value of these stats and they really don't want to do that.
Pathetic lol

I’m a proponent of advanced stats, but they have ruined certain aspects of how we evaluate players. They have definitely negatively influenced how MVPs in recent years were selected.
2025-2026 Philadelphia 76ers:
Maxey/McCain/Lowry
Edgecombe/Grimes/Gordon
George/Oubre/Edwards
Watford/Barlow/Walker
Embiid/Drummond/Bona/Broome

I've noticed how poorly he contests most shots, I don't know if it's timing or what, but he either doesn't extends his right arm to contest, or does it too late.

They can give you a relative quantitative value of a player’s impact.
Think of the guards in the early 2000s (Iverson, Marbury, Francis, etc). They all put up good/great raw stats, and that time people thought it might translate to winning. Clearly it didn’t, but advanced metrics quantitatively show how their play-styles never correlated to a positive impact/winning.
On the other hand, they provide supportive evidence to players are already think/know are great (Bird, Magic, MJ).
Basically another lens or piece of evidence you can use to describe the value (or lack thereof) a player.

Re: Around the League: 2022-23 Season 3.0
I think certain statistics are very helpful, but these individual defensive metrics are complete garbage, always have been and probably always will be.
The only individual defensive stats guys can get are rebounds, blocks and steals. Jokic gets a lot of those so his metrics are always going to be good. It’s slightly more complicated than that but that’s the gist. It doesn’t really matter if he can’t move or doesn’t try consistently or whatever on the other 50 possessions of the game he plays.
Those statistics are built on the assumption that guys that get lots of blocks steals and rebounds tend to be effective defenders and I don’t think they’re equip to handle weird cases like Jokic. If he was as good defensively as some of those metrics say his coach wouldn’t ever take him out for defense in close games.

They only provide supportive evidence if they're useful. How are they useful? To provide supporting evidence for your prior beliefs. But they only provide supportive evidence if they're useful. The issue with basketball statistics is people want them to answer big questions about who the best player is and so on like in baseball and there are just too many variables in basketball for that to happen.
I do think they can help answer smaller questions though. Like if you told me the Sixers operated at 90th percentile efficiency with Maxey running a pick and roll I’d be more inclined to want to see him do that more than if you told me it was only 20th percentile.

RPM is the most trustable without a doubt, and Jokic is a solid defender with a good DRPM, of course not as good as Embiid but still solid.

Embiid because he’s a generational scorer while defense is the most valued trait at C.
