Re: The Sixerfan1976 Off-Season Thread (Update: Page 61)
Rudy can be a nice player for someone in the right system, but I think his best fit would be a for an offensive team that runs - someone like New York, Golden State, Phoenix, or what I expect will be an up-tempo team in Toronto. Sixers just drafted Turner 2nd overall and traded for Jodie Meeks, whom Stefanski is high on, last season. That's 2 young SGs. When one considers that Iguodala sometimes will play the 2, depending on match-ups, and that Lou Williams is our 6th man and designated scorer off the bench and will also play the two alongside Jrue, and that Kapono gets spot minutes at the 2 when we need a 3, there is simply no room for Rudy here. Plus Portland expects to get a first round pick or a rotation player for him, something the Sixers would be foolish to offer.

And Hawes is soft and apparently spoiled.
That's possible, but if they did improve themselves, they did it in a year where the FA crop was considered the best possible. And I actually think it's questionable to believe that teams with a ton of cap room (outside of the clippers) really did that much to improve. I suppose time will tell, but I think it's equally possible people will be questioning teams like the Nets spending tons of cash and cap room to sign the likes of Travis Outlaw, Farmar, and Anthony Morrow. Or the Bulls using their sizeable cap room to sign Kyle Korver and Ronnie Brewer to big deals
Let's face it, teams with cap space end up using their cap space even on mediocre players who probably don't deserve the rich deals they get. Outside of the true FA gems this offseason, (Miami 3, Amare, Boozer) - I think a lot of money was spent on role players. And in a FA market like next year where the FA crop is incredibly thin outside of Carmelo, all of that cap space wasn't going to get us anyone of significance from a FA standpoint, just most likely, another role player signed to a rich deal.

Travis Outlaw likely got overpaid. Morrow and Farmar were great deals. Korver got market cash and same with Brewer. But yes, it's a tough way to build a team. Unless you're Pat Riley.

So don't use it to overpay free agents. (Not that Farmar, Morrow, Korver, or Brewer are overpaid, but I digress). Cap space doesn't have to be something you build up for one summer than spend it all at once. Use it as a tool to give yourself flexibility, like the Blazers and Thunder have done. Even the Knicks were albe to salvage their offseason by doing this.
And again, teams overpay players more when they DON'T have cap room, because they have no way to replace them.

Re: The Sixerfan1976 Off-Season Thread (Update: Page 61)
I agree. Using cap space in smaller amounts and holding onto it is a good thing to do. You sign 1 mid name player that puts a small dent and nothing more into your cap space and see where it gets you. Elton Brand and Josh Smith are who we chased.. We knew we werent getting smith. Some of us disgussed the idea of Shawn Marion as well. Maybe the smart thing would have been to throw some money at Ronny Turiaf and get him instead... having still a playoff team, and a nice big man who will bring a lot of good things to the team. They would have been better off doing it that way. Save the money is not always a bad idea. Or spending it wisely in this case. I'm aware that Turiaf has been injured a lot since signing with Golden State but the fact that he makes considerably less than Elton Brand and considering the fact that Golden State was still able to move him to New York tells me that it would have been a win win situation had it been us.
Looking back on it Elton Brand and Josh Smith didn't exactly serpate my mandibles. It was nice attempt on the Sixers part to sell a winner to the city but I think they moved way to fast in doing so. And the team is in cap hell once again with no way to get out. All I can hope for is that Elton Brand comes back ready to battle because this is a make a break year for us on the whole Brand signing. In other words Brand is looking at strike 3 in my opinion.

Well, looks like the Ariza/Iggy deal won't be happening.
SF76, anything new? Guessing things are really slow and quiet right now, but give us a heads up on anything if possible.

I can't speak for SF76, but from the way Stefanski does things...doesn't seem like we will be seeing any new transactions for the time being.

No but this may make him more desirable to Houston since they are left with Budinger & Battier at SF.

Question is, what would sixers want from Hou?
Iggy
for
Jeffries + Hill + Budinger

I guess where the rumor wasn't already in the media, there is no insider update.

All of their picks from NY, their 1st rounder, and a Brand for Hill swap.

HartfordWhalers wrote:9/17/10, today for what is wrong with Iggy I will go with he rarely gets fouled while making a 3 pointer, thus leaving the Sixers with a serious deficiency in 4 point plays.

Not sure. IMO any move of Iggy should include a good young big. I'm not sold on Hill but maybe the NY #1 pick swap would interest some if this draft is deep in young big men. I can see where COMCAST would like the savings from moving Iggy's contract for an expiring & a young player or two.

Damn! When I saw this thread near the top of the forum I was all excited thinking that SF had commented.

considering that the NJ Nets want Melo. And Thorn just left there. I am sure we are on the speed dial for helping NJ land him. I would take Favors off their hands for giving them a few pieces like Iggy. Picture having Jrue, ET and Favors. And us being well under the salary cap. I can dream.

Yeah, but obviously for cap purposes we would be required to take back Iggy's salary in any deal.....What junk is NJ going to give us with Favors?
