Semi OT: Bluff City Classic (Thad)

Not sure if many follow the Bluff City Classic but it takes place in Memphis during the summer where either former Memphis high school, college,or pro players get together and play pick up games. Thad Young has been out there and the reports of play has been outstanding. They say his body is bigger and he is clearly the best player to set foot in the pick up games. Thad apparently performed the sickest dunk in the Classics history when he drove through two defenders with his slippery movements, cradled the ball and damn near blew off the rim over a defender. The whole place erupted. People were running around cheering. I'll try and find the video.

I'm anxious to see Thad this upcoming season, but his high performance in one of these pick up games is not necessarily a selling point for me. He should remain a Sixer this season, and I hope his improved body is coupled with continued steady growth in his overall game. Not sure what message he has been sent, but Billy King has reported that most in the league see him as a smaller PF than a SF, which would require some extra bulk. He's already pretty saavy around the rim, so I would think the bulk would help him further improve his efficiency on offense, and better manage some of the bigger PFs on defense. Would be interested in seeing the clip if you find it. I'm excited that Thad is a part of this franchise, and would not be upset if he takes a James Worthy-esque role as an athletic and slightly undersized PF in an uptempo style of play this season...I'm not a fan of small ball, but think this could be effective given the length/rebounding/defense at the 1-2-3 spots with Jrue/Turner/Iguodala.

I've heard of this years ago but I don't know what to take away from this.

what position is he playing? Do they play defense in those games?

Here are a few clips...not showing the dunk, but a few highlights from Thad.

Well... I'm not a big believer in Thad's game or his potential so this is good news, he just might raise his trade value. I just don't see him as a NBA starter on a winning team he's a sixth or seventh man at best like two former Chicago Bulls Cliff Livingston http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-IAlUGQXxY and Jason Caffey http://video.yahoo.com/watch/1255573/4409600 Two change of pace energy guys that had talent but no true position

This quote will bring fireworks :)

Funny thing about Thad is he might put up 18 & 7 feeling the heat of Turner on board or he may get crunched by the numbers in an attempt to get Meeks & Kapono on the floor.

I was reading some twitters a few days ago that he scored like 38 or so.

After the comparisons don't bother taking them seriously anyway.

Drifting OT, while I'm not familiar with Memphis I must a fan of any sort of event like this that gets players in the league, in college, and in hs together. I think its great when the players that made it aren't afraid to go back, and play against the next round of incomers.

As to Thad, its great hearing good reports about our players, but I think the interesting element is that he is bulking up. Assuming he stays here, we should just sticky a discussion on Thad at 3 or Thad at 4, because I'm not sure when this debate will end as to where he is best. He clearly hasn't had the rebounding you want at the 4 {or maybe even the 3}, but on offense his post game is more refined than his outside game. Defense hasn't scared anyone inside or outside, but the fear is he is undersized at 4 while he should have the lateral quickness for the 3.

 Four or four thousand post isn't going to change my opinion of Thad, you make it sound like I called him a scrub, besides Livingston and Caffey had long productive careers and theirs no same in that. I simply stated that Thads not a starter on a winning team because I believe he has a no defined position . Thad's skills and talent are not as dynamic as Iverson or Barkley to get away with being undersized. So call me a hater, i have no personal animus toward Thaddus Young this is my observation of his game.

What are you watching? Thaddeus Young in arguably his worst season, average all but a 1 point less, a few percentage rebounds less. His FG percentage only dropped by a measley 2.

At the very worst, I get a 15/5 forward. Secondly, see that grand daddy of ours, Iguodala? Young is a far superior slasher, and a better shooter then he is. That's not just coming from me, I used the same hotspots Kobb did. The only place where Iguodala was superior in, was the mid-range, and Thad(34%) wasn't too shabby.

I've argued time and time again, that our head coaches borderline on just plain awful-to-insane(Jordan). This is the FIRST time in quite a long time that we got a real qualified actual head coach. Whose coached some real actual talent.

Our(and Thad's) defense will get better by Collins alone.

This guy only averaged 10 pts ONCE in his career, I'll be nice and say twice.

If your going to compare Thad to ANYBODY, at least make it somebody who shot at least 13 shots a game like Thad has done these past two seasons. Contrary to this school of thought, and I don't know where it came from, Thad is NOT a garbage buckets player.

They typically don't get 13 shots because they're not good enough. Thad doesn't even get these shots, he creates them.

If Thad doesn't average 50 ppg in a league like that then I'm disappointed. That sort of summer league is where NBA players have averaged 65 ppg.

I think the comparisons were meant for the brand vs weatherspoon posts. Thaddeus really is the opposite of those two players.

Did Iguodala's name come up in my post ? NO! This is my observations of Thaddus from watching almost every GaTech game for 30yrs. The problem is he's tweener like I said in my previous post he's not a 3 nor 4, here's another player Thad reminds me of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhCy8q2p5Jw and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5Bl-5Dz ... re=related

It's a good thing Thad only played ONE whole year at Georgia Tech. At least you got a comparison where we're talking about a 6'8 scoring forward.

Not quite the athlete, or the overall shooter Thad is though. Try again :).

He's playing on the 'Knicks' team. Here is some more game action. From this link, you can see he looks thicker...consistent with the 12 lbs weight gain.

Not much to see on here...typical street ball game. They played one of the Memphis Tiger teams and it was essentially Thad vs 5. Not sure who all the players/recruits are for Memphis, but #5 had some freakishly long arms...Rondo-esque, without the complete game.

Thad looks good. still don't rebound
