probably helps with strengthening his feet and getting his body in tune with them. Sneakers/shoes are why people have foot issues.

Wasn't that perspective debunked a couple years ago?

I have never heard that but you definitely develop foot muscle imbalances as a result of shoes.

It's actually more unhealthy for your feet to walk around barefooted than it is with shoes. You can develop foot and back issues walking around barefoot or in flip flops/sandals. They don't offer the support for your feet or back that people on their feet need.

He’s been incredible… I’m sure you saw the stuff [with Hassan Whiteside] – the trash talk and the jokes. But the coolest thing about that was when everyone on the team plane saw what happened, we all had his back. We were like, “Yeah, Jo! Go at him! Don’t back down! We believe you’re the best big man in the league and you have to show that every night!” Us having his back in moments like that is important and cool.

I believe he has a chance to be the best player to play this game because of his mentality. His mindset is, “If I want to do something, I’m going to go do it.” You see it on the court. Guys are fouling him or struggling to guard him and he’ll yell, “He can’t guard me! Get him out of the game! He’s going to foul out!” He does everything in his power to put our team in a position to win. And not only does he put up big numbers, he draws so much attention from defenses and he can get other players out of the game [due to foul trouble]. He has the mentality of a champion. Yesterday, he pulled me aside during the Heat game and he said, “We’re going to the playoffs.” And I said, “Yo, take us there!” He’s at the point now where he knows how dominant he is and he knows that nobody can guard him. And I think he’s right, nobody can guard him!

But with that said, everything he does is for the betterment of the team. That’s the coolest part of having him as a friend and having him as a teammate – he’s so unselfish. He always says, “I gotta keep working.” He always says, “I can’t let the city down.” He never talks about how he’s made it. He’s always talking about how much work he still has to do and how much he still needs to improve. That mentality is what separates him and makes him great. I’ve never been around a player like that. I’d say Dirk [Nowitzki] is the closest comparison in terms of being great while also being humble, hungry and doing everything for the betterment of the team.

That's true if you have structural issues with your feet... Apart from the navicular fracture, does Embiid have any other foot issues...

If he has a natural arch, and doesn't have flat feet, he should be fine...

Yeah I wear orthotics because of my flat feet (had stress fractures as well) and whenever I go bare feet for any length of time my feet are absolutely killing me afterwards.

The orthotics are there to change the shape of your foot so that you have an arch... going barefeet or wearing flip flops hurts like hell afterwards... as it is basically stretching your foot back out into a flat position which it is not used to. Not a very smart idea by Joel I would have thought.

For some reason I had it in my mind that he had flat feet... The only thing I can find though is this article from way back in 2015 where an unnamed "specialist" says it appears he has flat feet. So I guess it's not confirmed.

http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/sixers/Embiid_re-broke_same_bone_in_injured_foot.html

"Obviously I am not familiar with his case and all cases are different, but I've watched Joel Embiid and he appears to be very flat-footed. That lends to problems with that bone. To definitively say this may be career-threatening, I can't do. But as a specialist and an outsider looking in, there is every reason for serious concern."

I don’t think that Embiid has any abnormalities like high arches or flat feet because I remember reading an article about his feet where they specifically were contrasting his feet with Waltons, and Ming’s and said that he didn’t have any red flags.

You would think that our media would have asked these questions by now though instead of the deer the headlights types of questions that they usually ask in the press conferences.

Hmmm... W/e it is our medical staff is still incompetent, if his feet are flat he should absolutely not be without shoes. If his feet are fine, then yeah it's okay... Either way our guys let our players do w/e the hell they want, so even if there were issues we would be the last team to try to right the ship...

Watching game 1 embiid is too enamored with the perimeter game and guard moves. He needs to prioritize his post game. Back to the basket and utilize your strength. Not only that, this gamestyle will preserve him healthwise.

Thought embiid was going through the motions on defense. Not his dominant defensive self But I'm ok with him not taking so many risks if that's what it takes to conserve himself. His mere presence is still better than 90 percent of the league to clog up the lane and deter drives. Look what happens when Saric is at the 5. Drives to the lane galore. At least other teams will pause when they see embiid in the lane.

John Wall is elite top 3-4 point guard in the nba. Embiid got fooled by wall dishing it off for layups. But the team has got to play team defense when embiid has to commit to Wall

Was he really that bad tonight or was he just not as good as usual?

Not as good as usual. Was still dominant for stretches, just seemed stubborn in wanting to do too much in the second half.

Like someone said above he was trying to do too much, needs to do his bread and butter game, concentrate on the simple stuff he does so well then bring in the other plays when he’s got a foundation. Still, for a guy slightly off his game his numbers are excellent.

If he's not going to jump, then he needs to rotate quicker. His instinct is waiting to go for the block like Zo instead of playing like Duncan
