IDK who is right or wrong here but acting like there's no way a bouncer used a "card anyone that looks under 25" policy as an excuse to profile people seems like 20 different kinds of oblivious.

I guess racial profiling is a big problem in your country for you to draw that conclusion, given most on the floor are non-white. I was asked for ID when I was thirty. The bouncer must hate white guys. lol

notericjr wrote:the security guard was an 'ethnic' (for those non-aussies here, basically means slang non-anglo) and simply asked him and his 2 black friends for ID as they looked under 25 which is what they're trained to do. ben noticed he didn't ask his white friend and assumed they were being profiled but in reality his white friend was let in without having to present ID because he looks (and you can even verify this yourselves) like he's closer to 40 than 25.

anyway after ben vented on social media, he deleted the video after the casino refuted his claims and even had cctv footage to show they were let in after they showed ID. not to mentioned they're letting him stay at the casino for free

fair enough if ben thought at the time that he was being singled out but i would of hoped that upon reflection he would of seen that it was just a misunderstanding, hence why he removed his post after the casino came out and refuted the claims

but then a few hours later he doubled down on twitter...like WHY???. he's been doing good things in australia but things like skipping the exhibition games after the fact and this incident set him back in the public eye over there.

i know we shouldn't care as sixers fans as this stuff is generally irrelevant in our context but its just something to note. if athletes want to use their platform to speak on social and political issues they have to expect some push back as well especially if it looks like they may be in the wrong.

It is pretty obvious that he has an agenda.

Asking for ID of anyone that looks young...even young adults is standard procedure.

The Crown got smashed with a $460,000 fine recently for letting underage people slip through security with fake ID's. **** is serious and has nothing to do with racial profiling, i mean if you want to call it age-ally (if that's a word) profiling people, then sure. But there's a reason why we don't let children and teenagers into places like this.

and in any case, like someone else said...if you've ever been to the Crown in Melbourne or the Star in Sydney, then you'll know there's not a lot of white people people on the floor especially in the highroller levels lol.

Too add a little more fuel to the fire of the public eye in Australia, it's been hinted that Ben's visit here is being funded wholly by the Victorian State govt for promotion purposes/tourism etc what have you, so as you can expect now people see Ben dining out on their tax-payer funded dime

This is getting ridiculous. I miss searching for new jumper footage, instead all i get is one outrage after another now. Our guy should of stayed in Philly lol

I'm white well over 21 and was at a casino recently and got carded too, missing the point. Ditto this stuff about the bouncers being non-white, that's sort of weird you guys keep bringing it up honestly, I shouldn't need to draw yous a map?

It's literally the job of a security guard to profile people, like the only thing we know about their policy is literally for them to profile based what they think their age is. Most of them do a solid job but acting like it's impossible someone acted inappropriately is pretty silly imo. Anyone that's been to a bar in their life has probably ran into a crappy bouncer. The fact is none of us were there and are just wildly speculating on what happened.

Anyway, it's not like he's suing the casino or filing a police report or anything that actually impacts the casino. Guy did a tweet about something he felt happened to him, not sure why people are getting so bent out of shape about it.

Because casting wrongful racist aspersions at an individual or business is abhorrent. It actually sets back the fight against racism, just like some phoney "Me Too" assertions. And I'm not white, and was a victim of racial slurs as a kid.

I mentioned in the main board that I work in gaming in Melbourne, and my boss copped a months suspension because there were underage kids on the premises for 3 minutes. They used a self serve machine while he was serving other customers. So this **** is taken seriously.

The "card anyone that looks under 25" is a real thing. Security was merely doing their job, and Simmons needs to pull his fkn head in. Going by his dress mode of gold chains and camouflage pants, he sees himself as a wannabee gangsta rapper.

Someone mentioned that his trip is being funded by the State Government. Well he's clearly making the most of it, because he was sitting at a table next our richest/biggest punter at the very expensive Nobu restaurant.

Anyone over [pick the age] knows that carding is a thing, I'm saying that anyone over a certain age realizes that every once in a while you run into a jerk. Even if you are rolling with a punter (is that a high roller? very clear sign we aren't in the US cap) you tend to find people that will say anything.

IDK what happened. Maybe Ben was a huge dick. All I know is the people leaping to criticize him doth protest too much,

Not really reading all of it, but I used to bounce for a living for 8 years.

Our policy was to card everyone, didn't matter if they were 97.

Pretty simple, solves the problem. All this drama just sounds really dumb to me, as a former bouncer.....you card everyone and there is no problem. All this is really stupid, and if management had a brain it wouldn't be a problem.

I completely get what he means. Ben really doesn't dress, act or talk like an Australian in any way whatsoever. What I mean by that is that you would hardly find anyone in Australia his age that would wear gold chains around their neck and dress like a rapper... unless they were like 16 and watched too many youtube influencers. Probably the reason security pulled him in for an ID check.... he doesn't dress like you'd expect a 25 year old man to in Australia but a teenager.

I mean you only have to look at the other NBA guys from Australia. Ingles, Baynes, Mills, Dellavedova, Bogut. Nearly all these guys have lived in the US twice as long as Simmons and none of them came back different from when they went over. I've never seen a single video of any of those guys turning up to training and games in a damn stretch limousine every day, and walking into nightclubs with an entourage and paying a photographer to follow them around. If that's what Ben is about that's great and completely up to him.... but not too many Aussies are going to relate to that. Even more so when he starts acting like a spoilt and entitled brat when he is back in Australia.

Maybe Ben Simmons overreacted, but maybe, it's just possible, that if you try to see things from his perspective, this could have not been an isolated event for him. Perhaps he and his friends have dealt with this type of behavior, in more blunt terms, multiple times in his life and now has a platform to call it out. He's not alone, either:

I mean it all sounds like fair criticism to me. You can be a fan of Ben and still admit he is definitely entitled and egotistical.

The guy was wearing a jumper, jeans, a watch and a few chains...why would you compare him to a "rapper"? And even IF he did dress like a rapper whats the problem? The vast majority of the other Aussies you compared him to are all older and are white guys...Ben is neither so why would anyone expect him to act like them? SMH.

All anyone has to do is look up the brutal history of Australia when It pertains to race and how people of colour are still treated poorly even now and it's no surprise to see what happened to Ben..no surprise at all.

At least 20% of patrons in Aussie casinos are Chinese. Being carded is no big deal. Just show your licence and move on in. I’m the same age as Ben and every time I’ve gone to a casino, I’ve been carded. IMO, he’s bringing heightened US racial sensitivities to Aus which makes him look really bad in eyes of Aus public.

If that's what Ben is about that's great and completely up to him.... but not too many Aussies are going to relate to that. Even more so when he starts acting like a spoilt and entitled brat when he is back in Australia.

Not just a rapper but a "gangster rapper" that seemed odd :noway: .

Racism is just as bad In Australia as it is In America...let's not pretend like Australia is some kind of mecca of racial harmony because that would be a damn lie and the aboriginal/black/muslim communities would very much agree with that.
