2019 NBA Summer League(s)

Post#1 » by smittybanton » Tue Jul 2, 2019 12:15 pm

First day MVP was Lonnie Walker, chosen two picks after Zhaire Smith, I think. Hopefully Zhaire can also show out as a second year player. Excellent shooting displayed by Kyle Guy and Tyler Herro...

Gotta say the only thing concerning me regarding Dean Wade was injuries, but he played exactly like his college production suggested last night.

Keeping going Lonnie and Keldon. Every great game makes Bryn Forbes more available for a trade!

We’re gonna run a lot of read and react offense with no iso scorers on the team. I feel its gonna look sloppy early on.
There’s never been a time in history when we look back and say that the people who were censoring free speech were the good guys.

Things I want to see from our guys:

Milton - confidence handling the ball, ability to make things happen off the dribble, run the show when he's out there

Thybulle - no hesitation pulling the trigger on open 3s, finishing ability in transition

Smith - confidence with the jumper, can he do anything off the dribble?

Smith did a little passing off the dribble last year in SL. Had some sick underhand dishes to bigs. Him being able to score off the dribble would be a complete unexpected grand slam outcome.

He showed a bit of potential in his handful of regular season minutes. His handle, while not dynamic, seemed surer than it was in college. He also showed a little bit of midrange pull up off of one dribble. If he can continue to develop his handle his athleticism and body control will give him opportunities to score.

I'm really intrigued by him.

If the league whiffed on Keldon Johnson, so be it. I didn't like his prospect profile and he faded down the stretch of the Kentucky season.

Agree, but still. I think we overdrafted a guy with a low ceiling that put up historic defensive numbers while benefiting from playing in a zone we won't run here.

If he turns out to be GP 2.0. Amazing. Steal. I'm sorry. But to me I see a marginal 22 year old role-player at best with essentially no offensive game so to speak.

I get having a philosophy with your draft picks and ranking them based on perceived organizational fit, but I think that's a shortsighted way of evaluation, and it leads to missing out on someone special.

Korkmaz put up 40 in a summer league game. Fultz actually looked decent in a game

Stop overreacting to these performances

Not to mention the talent level in Summer league this season is worse than usual. The draft just gone, outside of the top pick, was a TERRIBLE draft. If a player does well just remember he's playing against talent that would put the rub into the word scrubs.

Shake Milton is gonna look like a Superstar in the Summer league. He's going to look like the 2nd coming of James Harden against these dudes.

And for counterexamples, Tatum and Donovan Mitchell came to summer league lighting it up and never looked back.

But it's deeper than any one specific performance. Whether or not Keldon is actually good has no bearings on the fact that we passed on that chance for a zone defender who couldn't eclipse 10 points per game as a super senior.

I’m not looking at just stats. I’m looking at a 6’8 PF handling the ball and cramming it over dudes. Same guy took a step back nba three and drained it. He’s showing what he’s capable of on top of what I’ve seen from him in college.

Dismissing SL performances altogether is equally silly to expecting stardom from guys that played well.

Kuzma is another rookie who burst in the scene during SL. That turned out to not be an aberation, he's a really good player.
