Impossible in the switch everything era.
The only way to hide a bad defensive player in the modern NBA is to field other bad defensive players (LOL) like we did in the playoffs last year to hide Harris. Teams were so preoccupied lighting up Richardson, Milton and Korkmaz, they forgot to attack Tobias.
Well i’ll go further. It’s impossible to get all bases covered.
If you watch the Nuggets and Jazz series both teams would just run 1-5 PnRs all game. This lead to Murray and Mitchell getting their 40-50 pts. When Murray dropped 50, was if because Mitchell was a liability on defense?
So between a liability like Seth and a PG with elite defense like Jrue. The defense doesnt matter much when you just run heavy 1-5 PnR. This is why defense at the PG position impacts little IMO because they are usually just being erased by the screen play, unless they would opt to switch with the big who set the screen.
Why do I say we got the personnel to hide the defense?
We can do pre-switch with Ben, Green or Tobi all 3 are mobile wings.
All 3 multiple wings can slow the ball handler, rotate on defense if being blown away and have Embiid or D12 to protect the rim. Or we can ICE the 2 man game then turn it into a shooting contest like how Mitchell and Murray did or try to deflect the ball from behind the shot like how our guys (thybulle and Jrich) likes it this would force the guard to drive to the rim where they will be met by our wings and big.
Lastly, another way is to play how the Heat did it against the Celtics. Run a zone defense. This messed up Kemba’s PnR game and Tatum’s ISO game.
I think you can get away with Milton or Seth’s defense. But not possible with IT though because you’re basically playing 4v5 defense. But IT is playable say you’re up against a weak 5 man unit made up of guys in the 2nd unit and maybe some starters where IT can light it up on offense. That is if he still has it in him. This guy at his peak averaged around 30 with around 60TS%.
The league really has turned it into a scoring contest. This is why there were several 5 man units that are league best yet undersized at the 1-3 positions. You have the OKC’s Cp3-Shroeder-Shai and Mavs emulated it with Seth-Doncic-THJ during the playoffs.
Overall, your primary focus should be offense and secondary is defense. Both are important it’s just there is a big imbalance between offense and defense.
Why was Tobi not hunted on defense?
Between Kemba taking a wide open mid range shot off a 1-5 PnR and Tatum taking a challenged shot by Tobi (Tobi is defending Hayward actually), which would you choose?
