I wasn't aiming for accuracy there, but that's still a good question, because I remember first learning how to create and send them in the year 95/6. I wiki'd it and it did TECHnically exist as a thing even in the 70s, but as we knew them from 95 and later I dunno. Jimmy Carter supposedly was the first US Pres to use one in 1976 and Clinton did one in 94. I think it was the advent of web-based email clients that they really took off, but I'm at a personal disadvantage because I myself didn't use or create one until 1995/96 and that was in a college basic computer course. My first comp was a red iMac. I had used Apple IIs as far back as the mid 80s in elementary school and Macs after that in elementary school. My HS was cheap, they didn't have a comp lab.
