I'd be shocked if he accepted, but crazier things have happened. Maybe once reality sets in that he really doesn't want to go to a tanking team in Houston he would accept such an offer though.
I think the highest we can safely go without too much regret is 4 years, ~$160 mil and the lowest is 3 years, ~$140 mil.
I still think 4yrs/$125m is the right offer. More than that and we'll regret it. 4/$160 is $40m per year. 4/$140 is $35 per year. I'd bank on one more good (fringe All-Star) year, one more playable (starter-level) year, and the last 2 years being a viable rotation player. At $35m+ per year, those last 2 years would hurt too much... as bad as Tobias' contract.
On the other hand, if we offer just a 2-year contract I think we could pay a whole lot more per year. Maybe even the max salary if it's just 2 years.
If he wants 4yr and $35m+ per year, I'd let him walk to Houston.
