Embiids 70 points - how it compares

I checked some stats on individual scoring records to see where Joel's 70-point game ranks. It's hard to compare different eras, especially in the past Wilt would play 48 minutes.
I divided the points scored by how many minutes the player played in the game to get points per minute, then multiplied by 48.
Of all the 60+ games played in history below are the results. I added KAT's game tonight manually as it wasn't yet listed in the data. Embiid 6th all-time in points per minute (60+ points) and KAT 10th - in the same night!!!
The biggest surprise is how insane Klay's 60 point game was, and how Kobe's 81 isn't as special as the Lakers' PR make-out. Also just amazing how many times Wilt appears on this list.
The data can be twisted a million different ways, I just thought this way was pretty interesting.

He accomplished it against Wembayama, and that's the significant difference.
Looking ahead 5-10 years, Wemby will likely emerge as one of the best defenders the league has ever witnessed.
Honestly, I didn't anticipate Biid shooting this well against Wemby. He essentially shot blindfolded with those mid-range shots against Wemby's outstretched arms.
This wasn't like Klay being defended by Monta Ellis or Towns defended by some random Hornets player. Embiid faced a defender who could be remembered as the best defensive player in league history.
Apart from showcasing his all-around game, something I don't think Towns and Klay demonstrated, these aspects like defense, rebounding, and assists can significantly impact your endurance and scoring opportunities.
And this is one of the aspects that stats often fail to capture.

There is so much context missing from what I posted, it was pretty much just straight data.
If we are to add context - Wembayama is a kid playing in his first year on a terrible team, so I wouldn't talk up that aspect of it too much.

Wemby is already the league’s best individual defender at -6 dfg% with players atleast 15dfga per game.
its nowhere as good as what Klay or Towns faced on their career scoring night.

I remember Dick Jerardi was fuming when we took Embiid over his boy Dougie McBuckets lmao.

I had the same reaction but I don’t think that his point was clear. While I hate to ruin the greatness of this tweet, they passed on McDermott with the Saric pick, so his point was likely “Joel is a good pick, but they will regret passing on McDermott with the second lottery pick.”
Not that he has a clue either way, but I think that was his intent.

Dick always thought college seniors should be the top picks. He had no clue.

I think the point is - nobody regrets passing on Doug McDermott.

Rendell was a blowhard and a clown who routinely made an ass of himself talking about Philly sports. Who can forget his time on the Eagles post game show? 'The Guv'.

Wemby is still a very inexperienced defender and probably physically too weak to play the center position, despite his length...If you want to try to defend Joel, you have to get very physical with him, which Wemby did not and probably could not do. Still it is very impressive that Joel managed to shoot over that length.

Rendell and Jerardi were two of the more unlikable Philly personalities I ever watched on sports TV. Marcus Hayes will always be #1, but they are 2a and 2b.
anyway, Biid is on another level this year. We really must do everything possible to get him fully healthy to the playoffs.
