Welcome Jared McCain!
Since nobody else started a thread for him yet. Not sure how long he'll be here but assuming he'll stick around, let's hope he pans out.

Re: Welcome Jared McCain!
A+ shooter who works like crazy and has an abundant love and joy for basketball. He might not still be here come training camp, but it worked well the last time we drafted a player with a similar description.

Scheyer said McCain is the “most disciplined worker” he’s ever seen in the program.

Re: Welcome Jared McCain!
hope he has a late growth spurt lol
but no seriously good shooter , sneaky good rebounder for a guard, powerful base so should hold up on defense despite his size, not against great wings but yeah no ****. Gives us a guy who can hopefully get hot from 3, which is what you need in the modern NBA.
Again would have taken Knecht probably but same tier of prospect imo with different downsides; banking on McCain's youth to make up for it
Probably trade bait despite the lies of Morey tonight.

Re: Welcome Jared McCain!
you'll have very similar situation, with all the pros and cons, of the Cavaliers with their backcourt of Garland and Mitchell. But at least you have MVP candidate Embiid and have cap space. So, while there might have been better paths forward, you might still be in good shape. It's imperative you find a long defender that can play the 2 with either of them so they're not on the floor together for long stretches. Not sure who is available. Maybe see if you can pry Okoro away from CLE?

Re: Welcome Jared McCain!
McCain has short arms and has average vertical athleticism at best, but his great leg strength allows him to secure good rebounding positions and excel in lateral defense. Defensively, he has the potential to reach the level of Donte DiVincenzo and Josh Hart, who share a similar defensive archetype.
It would be ideal to complement him with lengthy players at the 3 and 4 positions who can roam on defense.
Offensively, he’s an elite shooter, with a game reminiscent of Seth Curry and J.J. Redick. He excels in shooting during transitions, catch-and-shoot situations, and pick-and-roll plays. However, unlike Curry and Redick, McCain also possesses a strong midrange game, featuring moves like up-and-unders, step-throughs, and turnaround jumpers.
Similar to Tyrese Maxey, during non-Embiid minutes, he needs to play alongside a power forward who can punish the defense if they switch.
In terms of potential, he’s on the same level as Knecht and Jakobe Walters. All three are likely to become borderline stars at best, with a slim chance of achieving full star status.
Jakobe Walters is not projected to contribute soon due to his low field goal percentage. McCain also shows way more maturity to his game than Walters. Meanwhile, Knecht's defensive flaws as a small forward might be harder to mask compared to McCain's as a shooting guard.
McCain is also easier to fit at the 2 if we’re aiming for the Paul George and Brandon Ingram sweepstakes at the 3. Drafting McCain would allow George or Ingram to play their natural position. On the other hand, if we draft Knecht, we would be forced to play George or Ingram at the 4, with Knecht at the 3, which might not be an ideal fit.

Re: Welcome Jared McCain!
What was he like when he was in high school? Also a fantastic off ball shooter, or is there some ball handling potential that he couldn't showcase due to Duke's roster construction?
Although he's small. The rebounding and steal percentage are an indication of court awareness and toughness. Something that you definitely need when you're not an absolutely amazing ball handler at 6'2''. All the work ethic and character reports are obviously a positive sign, we definitely need to surround Embiid with these types of characters.

There's about 4 or 5 seasons of vids on this YouTuber's account. Docuseries, random vids and even a movie on Jared Mcain.
Haven't watched them. Just pointing it out. Watched the first few minutes of one vid...
Turns out he ate kale and drank almond milk when growing up. Didn't hear of any steak mentioned.

Re: Welcome Jared McCain!
He plays such portable game. It's easy to see him transitioning smoothly to the NBA.
Good connective passer. Finds the quiet spaces in transition. Elite shooting off the catch. Uses his gravity to leverage it into drive + kick opportunities for himself and others.
1:12 is an action I could easily see McCain and Embiid collabing on together. Screen to get Embiid an mismatch in the post, Embiid recognizing the double into a kick back out to McCain for a wide open trey.
He's also built strong and has a thick frame. 6'2 but 203lbs and uses his body to create space for himself and absorb contact. Also a passable team defender for the position and he rebounds hard.
https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/jared-mccain-2/gamelog/2024
Come March his stats were really impressive. 16.8/5.5/2.1 and a steal on 55/40/93 and a 64 TS% and a 34.4% free throw rate which we love to see.
Getting a player with similarities to Eric Gordon / DDV / Seth Desmond Bane Curry / Grayson Allen for a 16th overall pick in a mixed bag draft is fantastic value.

Re: Welcome Jared McCain!
From Vecenie
The guys who have tended to exceed their draft position offensively in recent years have tended to either be elite in terms of creativity or be great shooters who can play through contact. Jared McCain is absolutely the latter, and his production at his age is not something to be ignored. He has a strong 200-pound frame, and the intel on McCain isn’t just good; it’s elite. He ticks every single box from a character perspective and is known to be excellent in terms of work ethic — both in the gym and in the weight room. There’s every reason to buy into him continuing to grow from this already strong starting point. At the very least, you’re getting a great shooter whom you know will come in and make 3s. He also has more scoring ability beyond that, too. He’s a sneaky bet to average 20 points per game in the NBA at some point. He has more juice than someone like Seth Curry, to whom he is often compared. I also like his defensive tape more than many of the smaller guards in this class. I have McCain as a lottery pick, and I’d imagine that I’ll be higher on him than most in this class.
He does everything left-handed except for shooting. He started shooting right-handed after breaking his thumb early in his life, and it stuck.

Re: Welcome Jared McCain!
That shooting stroke is smoooth. Remindes me of Klay Thompson shooting form.
Can't ask for more in this weak draft at #16.
Think at least he's going to be a serviceable backup guard with potential to be a good starter.
Only thing i don't like is he's not a great fit next to Maxey, but as i sayed you can't ask for more given the context of the situation. Good pick.

I don’t know McCains game, but you can’t play 2 6’-2” guards at the same time. So I’m guessing he’ll be moving on.
At this point I’m extremely concerned Morey is incompetent. I hope things look brighter by the 4th of July!

I like this kid. Honestly, what’s the big difference between McCain and Reed Sheppard?

Yeah, I’m fully in on this pick. Everyone is absolutely gushing about this kid’s intangibles and he has the production & upside of a much higher pick. Between him & Maxey - we have the makings of a legitimate culture where hard work & good vibes set the tone.

Re: Welcome Jared McCain!
There's no doubt McCain will be fun to watch. He's one of the best shooters in the class and is extremely likeable personality.
The frustration lies in the fact that all the teams we're competing with that are already better than us keep getting bigger and more athletic and we're zagging and getting smaller and more unathletic.

I'm down with the pick. Great head on his shoulders. Elite shooter with a great work ethic. Yes please. If we're worried about size that's what trades and FA is for.
