Tank Watch 2025

Post#1 » by SixthStreet » Thu Jan 16, 2025 6:05 pm

There appears to be a clear bottom 8 in the tank chase:

Washington
New Orleans
Charlotte
Toronto
Utah
Portland
Brooklyn
Chicago

If we join in earnest that makes 9. We have a VERY high tank ceiling if we find a season ender for George and then sit Maxey for a bunch of games because the roster is completely bereft of ISO scorers, defenders, and playmakers, even inefficient ones, as the roster has been built to service the ecosystem of stars. These other teams with young players all have one or two high ceiling guys who with the ability to put up 30+ shots can win a game every couple weeks. They are also littered with high effort defenders and we have none except for Yabusele (who we should trade if we can get a late 1st).

I don't think you catch the first three but there is a path to 4th seed and we'll know it by the trade deadline because we are going to rack up a ton of Ls between now and then.

I think you have to try now. Even if you try and fail and end up with the 7th worst record it is worth a shot to get lucky and move up in the lottery. If you give the 7th pick to OKC, you live with it.

Honestly, I really am beginning to believe we're in a stealth tank.

1. Joel's mysterious injury - first an ankle, then aggravated ankle when he tripped in warmups then became a foot and still no timeline for return.
2. Team keeping an open 15th roster spot - some say it's owner being cheap; but could also be to prevent Nurse from having options beyond the old washed guards and two guys he has no faith in CVIV and Edwards.
3. Nurse' recent comments after the OKC game. 8 players out including starting 5 and Nurse barely gave any praise to his outmatched young guys for fighting so hard. Either Nurse knows he's lost the team or Nurse knows the team is tanking and has just thrown in the towel.
4. Harris pulling plug on downtown stadium after Silver got pressured by Comcast (new tv deal via NBC) and Silver pressed Harris. Harris has cut a deal with Silver in the past (Hinkie for Simmons) for the ping pong balls.
5. Are you seriously telling me this team couldn't have flipped some picks and Drummonds deal to land Nick Richards? He's exactly what they need with Joel MIA a big man who rebounds and guards the paint. He's also cost controlled for next year too. There wasn't even a blip about Sixers having interest.

No point slightly tanking and still gifting OKC a pick just outside the top 6. Either all in or or all out.

Does Yabu hold enough value to OKC to maybe increase protections to top 20 and then convert to a 2nd rnder?

We should not fear giving OKC the 7th pick. If it happens it happens. If you really don’t believe Embiid can play 60% of the rest of the games, tank as best you can and find the first reason you can to shut down George. Maxey can and should play a lot of games as he is not capable of driving enough wins on his own to derail the tank. He’s got enough things he can experiment with.

It's not even if Joel can play 60% of the games; its that this team now must win 83% of the games Joel plays in (42 games left at 60% participation means 25 games played and last year's 10th seed needed 36 wins to get in). Our schedule for rest of the season is brutal as we start facing teams with actual winning records and have mostly finished off the "creampuffs."

Depressing fact: Our winning % is lower than the Nets' % from last year (38 to 39) and the Nets were the 11th seed aka out of the playoffs. The Bulls, currently the 10th seed, have a .439 winning % which is exactly the same percentage as the 36 win 10th seeded Hawks from last year.

Well Portland doesn't seem willing to help us out tonight. The Clippers are pounding them.

Embiid out 7-10 days

 They're going to drag this out all year because they think that will get people to still come and buy tickets.

For everything that's holy, just frigging tank. Shut Embiid down; and then at the first opportunity shut PG down and same for Maxey.

The doctors they consulted with before that extension should be exposed and as Garfield used to say "dragged out into the street and shot."

Looking at the standings, we're currently 8th worst (.385 winning percentage), but there's a big gap between the 5th (Jazz - .256%) and 6th (Blazers - .325%) worst teams. I think even with a full-on tank the best/worst we can hope for is 6th worst. According to Tankathon, even if we got to the 6th worst we'd still have a 54.2% chance of giving the pick to OKC. In other words, a tank likely gives us a less than 50/50 chance of getting the pick.

There is no good option for this season - we are well and truly f'ed.

This is 100% tank. No way Joel is playing another game this season with this 7-10 days announcement.

Did the Sixers go specifically to Doctors they WANTED to clear them? Are these like the old school Doctors who would say "smoking is good for you!" because they got paid by Tobacco companies?

Leave Maxey, he's on my fantasy team, and I'm in 2nd.

Tank Watch tonight...Teams to keep an eye one.

Need the Hornets to beat Chicago tonight
It can happen. Charlotte is decent when Ball and Miller are playing.

Jazz vrs Pels is a win either way, but I'm going Pels.
If any team can make a push and start winning games it's them.

Toronto beat Boston, maybe they'll beat Milwaukee?
No chance Brooklyn beats LA, but we can hope.

This is why I said they needed to trash the season at 5-15. The chances this team got and stayed healthy were slim to none.

I will say in running tankathon, the team at pick 6 tends to move up frequently.

I say play the odds, take the losses. We can pass Portland, New Orleans (if Ingram and Zion play), and possibly Brooklyn. Charlotte could get hot and win some games too.

A 46% chance to keep the pick is absolutely worth a tank job. It shouldn’t even be a discussion at this point.

Maybe…. I’m going to be pretty upset when we piss away the season only to give OKC a better pick. Admittedly, I’m not sure what a better alternative is.
