The trouble with this board lately

Post#1 » by Johnny Broad-Street » Tue Feb 12, 2008 5:23 pm

We seem to have an overabundance of people expressing their opinions in an authoritative manner (which is the purpose of discussin forums), but failing to engage in proper discussion when those opinions are challenged or outright refuted (also a purpose of these forums).

I may be alone in this, but it's getting pretty boring listening to people ramble on an on without offering any substantiation for anything they say, and bickering like children when their statements are questioned.

If you want to bore people with your unsupported rants and suppositions start a blog and watch your hit count soar......but if youwant to engage in CONVERSATION...be prepared to do so.

Feel free to lock me or accuse me of back seat moderating or whatever else...but this board used to be populated by folks who knew their stuff. I miss the "good old days"

Any thoughts?

You'll always have that poster who wants to be "the boss".

Simple ways to improve your conversations on here, and in the real world:
-Be open to different ideas, viewpoints.
-If you disagree with a poster, explain why you disagree, and provide a counter.
-Do not get upset if others disagree with you, many will.

Have fun, and talk about the Sixers. This is not a place to vent.

Couldn't agree more.

Are you referring to this post when you say "vent"? Don't mean to vent...just think someone needed to say something.

LOL! When were the good ol' days? I mean, this board was polarized by Ricky and Jem for a good 2 years before this season and even before that there were some "toughies".

Wait... am I the **** because of the Ed Stefanski stuff???

Using the ignore button will improve your experience greatly. Worked for me.
Don't worry, that builds character and you can never have too much character...

Yeah this board was garbage when Ricky and Jem were around. I say it's better minus the tool SendEm.

No not you! At least you can defend your opinions. It's the people that blah blah blah until they're challenged and the either disappear or snipe at whomever challenged them.

The ignore button just lets these people ramble on an on without anyone engaging them. That just makes it worse for everyone not ignoring.

Oh good. Seriously... I'm on here because I love talkin' hoops and not because I believe I'm some basketball guru. If you guys ever think I'm being a prick... just let me know 'cause that's not my style.

As for SendEm, I guess Ricky taught me a lot as how to handle him. We're never going to convince SendEm that Iguodala is anything more than the worst player on the planet so I don't even bother debating him on that. A perfect example of how to diffuse that situation is the following....

SendEm wrote:Isn't Iggy suppose to be a great defensive player?

Every SG and SF with some game has scored on him quite easily. Has Mo Cheeks switched Willie Green onto Josh Howard already?

SendEm wrote:Iggy in foul trouble again in the first quarter of a game where he's guarding an elite offensive player?

The Guilty Party wrote:Iggy is terrible. He's the worst. If I ever met his mamma, I'd smack her twice across her lips.
******
25-23 after 1. The Sixers' energy seemed to die off after the 6 minute mark. I don't think we have the firepower to beat the Mavs in a half-court game so I'd like to see the team get out and run again.

Just give in... let him hear how you'd push Iguodala's grandmother down a flight of stairs and then move on. Debating him only makes matters worse...

Just a clarification, back seat moderating is "such and such should be banned because he did this", or "lock this thread". It has to be specific, about a poster, about a reason. It's mainly not allowed because it instigates and causes conflict. Saying that this board has become too hostile is not back seat moderating.

As for the overall premise, I somewhat disagree. I think, by and large, there's a larger # of good people here who are just here to talk about basketball. I do think there's a very select few who are here because they want to show their superiority, but I don't think it's any worse (and, in fact, I think overall it's better) than in years past.

As I said...I may be alone in my feeling.

I'm not talking about outright aggressive and mean people. Just posters clogging up conversation with ill-informed posts who have no desire to discuss, substantiate or defend their opinions.

While the quantity of posters is down, I think the overall quality of the posters on this board is extremely high.... at least for me. I like reading what most of you think about this team's past, present, and future. My only issue is that there isn't more. :-)

By the way, if/when (thinking positive thoughts) Ed makes a move to bring in a bigger name player in the summer, I fear that we're suddenly going to see a lot of new posters who fit the description you talk about, Johnny.

Like in any forum, there are a few of those who who always lurk around threads and play their broken records. Its definitely a pet peeve of mine when you counter someone's argument and they disappear rather than engaging in further discussion or simply owning up upon realizing they are wrong (as if being wrong on Realgm.com is a real drain on one's pride). With the exception of a few posters, theres been a pretty steady mutual admiration society going on here for awhile now. I don't particularly think its better now or it was better in the past.

I find it best just to put him on ignore but I still don't want other fans coming to our forum having this guy making us as a fan base look bad.

Oh no. I'm not attacking you.

In general. Posters shouldn't take their anger out on other posters, because they disagree with certain claims.

It is perfectly normal to debate though.

Ok cool. That's why I made a aeparate thread. I was WAY too close to popping off at a certain poster who really gets under my skin, and is the epitome of what I refer to. Just thought a little discussion on the matter would be healthy for everyone
