STEFANSKI calls into WIP

Post#1 » by sports savant » Tue Feb 12, 2008 7:14 pm

here's a lil summary of Ed's impromptu phone call into WIP:

if you want anymore specifics on what he said, THE SPORTS SAVANT IS HERE for ya...

1)regarding the younger players:
"maybe earlier in the season, we pushed the envelope trying to get them PT, but since we've gotten them on the court.. NOW, we cant get them off the court & THEY DESERVE ALL THE TIME THEIR GETTING"

2) trading Korver got me the cap space I really wanted AND it ALLOWS THAD TO GET THE MINUTES I WANT HIM TO GET

3) "we are playing the kids, they're playing incredibly hard and we are winning."

whatever happens w the draft- happens. Im not going to ask them to lose

ANDRE MILLER:

1) Miller at 32 has a lot left in the tank

2) I am not looking to build around 1 individual player there's no Shaq or Duncan. I want to build as a team

3) Miller makes every1 on this team better (he is integral for the improvement that you have seen in almost all the players and especially the kids)
------------
------------

Anthony Gargano asked him,

"Ed, your biggest needs seem to be PF and/or that #1 scorer"

ED REPLIES: "THAD is real good scorer and has potential w that low post little left hand hook."

then he continued: "I've been scouting lots of players now who have turned themselves into good shooters (he brought up Calderon and Manu who were "HORRIBLE SHOOTERS WHEN THEY CAME INTO THE LEAGUE")

"I think Lou/Thad/Iggy & Carney will all become effective 3pt shooters IF THEY CONTINUE TO WORK AS THEY HAVE BEEN"
----------
----------
When asked if the emphasis/points & expectations have been made directly to the players, ED RETORTS:

"It has been made CRYSTAL CLEAR to them!"
----------
----------

hope you all enjoy reading this-- respond back and I'll try to answer some questions you might have

Thanks Savant as always for posting a recap. I'm starting to believe that you should change your screen name to "Tom Joad" because whenever there's someone talking to Ed Stefanski... you're there.

So what I'm wondering after reading this is this.., does Ed think Thad is this team's starting PF of the future and if so, does this mean that our main off-season target will be a SG???

starting Evans and Green is pushing the envelope. Thad should've been getting PT a lot sooner (day 1?) like we were all saying

Boo-Yah! That's exactly where I was going. When you consider the fact that Stefanski and the Nets took Marcus Williams in '06 and Sean Williams in '07, Ed has shown that he's not afraid of a player with some questions about him.

Yes, Bartender.... I would like a side of Mayo to go with my Kool-Aid.

Based on the comment about Andre, Lou, Thad and Carney all being good 3pt shooters in the future, I'm not so sure he thinks Thad is the PF. If anything, I think he's implying those are his wing guys. I think he was basically implying Thad could be the #1 scorer not that Thad is a future PF. Then again, I didn't hear it first hand, so I could be misinterpreting.

I think he just doesn't want to commit to one of Thad being the PF or HAVING to pick up a PF this summer.

that area wasnt pursued further. But in the whole context, it appeared to me that he was more or less referring to the scoring aspect and promise of THAD , but also adding that he can play the post occassionally.

im not comparing him to T-Mac; but maybe use Thad like him. When the match-up or game dictates, T-mac goes to the block.

but to clarify, it was mentioned more as a scorer w potential to post up.

I see what you're saying, SF and you could be right 'cause I didn't hear it either. However, when Gargano asked about needed a PF/#1 scorer, Ed apparently replied with a comment about a low post move by Thad.

I feel like the Sixers are the NBA's version of "Lost". For every new story, there are 45 more questions.

Ahhh... thanks for the clarification, TomJoad.

In that case... hold the Mayo 'cause I'm going back to being obsessed with PFs.

Yea, that might be the case.

Either way, I seriously doubt this team could win anything significant with Thad at PF. If it's a 1 year plan to play him there, that's fine...just hope we can add a real PF in the next 2 years. We would have severe matchup issues come playoff time with someone like Thad trying to go against guys like Duncan, Garnett, Stoudamine (now that he back at PF), Sheed, Gasol, Bosh and Boozer.

yes he did. but having a "nice little left hand hook" didnt really seem to me to be a ringing endorsement for a low block specialist
-----
-----

Coming from the Nets, I believe Ed likes a true PG and then maybe interchangeable parts at the 2,3 and sometimes 4 (w/o true Centers)

then ya can go fast fast fast. get out on the break and play your tempo.

but I think a true PG is all he's seen and he's really a believer (he also stated again, "I came from seeing Jason (Kidd) everyday, and I really didnt have any idea that Andre was this good...."

so havin a legit #4 is probably not as important as the true #1, but Ed seems to really like the athletes.

Then again the Nets have been trying to find a post presence to go with Kidd since he got there.

If that is the case than that also could explain why Ed feels that 10 million in cap space is enough. You can't get a dominate big for 10 million but you can easily get a very good SG with 10 million and some filler in a trade. Somebody like Michael Redd etc.,,,

Sir Charles: on several occassions Ed has said that being 10mil under the cap allows us to sign a 20mill player

I cant explain all the COLLECTIVE bargaining agreement etc....

you can go over the cap, and then you have the luxury tax number which is about 10mill more than the salary cap

there is leadway as it is a "soft salary" cap
