Corey Maggette...next years FA signing????

Since I don't see the Sixers signing away a guy like Gilbert Arenas or Elton Brand in the off-season.....I was wondering what the rest of you though about Corey Maggette to play the SG spot. He gives the Sixers a bonafide #1 scorer, something I don't think Miller or Iguodala qualify as. I think he's over 22 ppg and he gets to the FT line a bunch....and knocks them down at over 80%. He also fits Ed Stefanski's desire to have a up-tempo team.

PG- Miller, Williams
SG- Maggette, Green
SF- Iguodala, Carney
PF- Young, Evans
C- Dalembert

I don't believe Young is the long-term answer at PF and that he should be moved to his natural position so I'm against going after Maggette. If the Sixers strike out on the open market (a serious possibility) I then believe Stefanski will use the cap space in a trade rather than settle for another swingman.

Signing Maggette would give the Sixers so many options...while I agree the jury is still out on Young being a long-term answer at PF, but when you look around the league- there aren't alot of prototypical 6'10 PF's in the league anymore. Young does possess the low-post offensive skills to play PF- he just needs to put some muscle on that 19 year old frame.

I would swap Maggette for Iggy especially if it means paying Corey $8-9 million per instead of paying Iggy the $11.5 million per he turned down over the summer. Maggette is an excellent penetrator in the half court, which is something that Iggy sucks at.\

Only teams with true bigs win championships, I don't expect that to change even though there aren't a great deal of young bigs in the league. The derth of young bigs in the league will suggest a continuance of the current trend of only a few teams being able to win a championship and that team will most likely be the team with the best frontline that season. Any team with Thad as the PF is guaranteeing that your team WILL NOT have the best frontline in the league.

With that said Amare, Al Harford, Marcus Aldridge, Al Jefferson, Carlos Boozer, all are young PF's that outclass Thad even before they lace their shoes.

Al Horford is a center, and a decent one at that. Can he become better? Yes. Am I placing my bets on it? No

Everyone else you've mentioned is all but locked up.

I think Artest and Marion probably are, but I'm not sure that Corey Maggette is good enough to justify putting Thad out of his most natural position.

If CM is the best you can get, I guess you take the sure thing and sign him. Worst case scenario, you can always move one of Thad/Iggy/Maggette for the PF you need at some point later on.

It's not a scenario I'm extremely pleased with though.

Maggette wants to cash in this summer and will be looking for a contract in years and dollars that is well more than he is worth. He is a decent offensive player, but despite his rep coming out of Duke he has never developed into much of a defender. He spent a good amount of time last year coming off the bench in LA and is not known for having the best attitude.

This team has enough wing players and they arent that tough to add through trades adn the draft, don't spend big on Maggette, we'll be regretting it for years. The Clips will be happy to see him go and will plug Al Thornton into his spot. In my view Thad will be better than Thornton so why keep him from playing his natural position by signing Maggette.

No Gm in the league would take Maggette at 8-9 mill over iggy at 9-11 mill. Even tho Maggette will get at least 9 this offseason.

How do you figure?

Which team is going to make him that offer?

Why? SG is not a priority. PF is.

Unless they want to become the Warriors of the East and keep Young at PF.

Maggette certainly did nothing to make me think we should sign him last night. he is best suited as a scoring sixth man on a good team, but this being the NBA he will get a sizable contract based on his name alone.

Over the last 20 games or so he's averaging over 25 a game. He didn't play particularly well tonight, but he's far better then a scoring 6th man. He struggled with his shot tonight, but he's turned into a quality 3 point shooter and he gets to the line as well as anyone in the league. He's a tremendous 2nd option and even a capable 1st option, but he's far from what we need.

The worst case scenario is that there is nobody to spend the money on, and the sixers just sit on the money for a year.

By no means are the sixers wasting cap space on a position that we don't need any help in, especially for an injury proned player like Maggette.

You are right that he is probably better than a sixth man, but a second or third option on a really good team is his current ceiling. He is scoring more this year after his average dropped two years in a row. How much of that is due to a lack of other offensive options on the team plus a contract drive year vs. him really improving his game? I'm not sure.

He's definitely not a number one offensive option on a contender. His three point shooting has definitely omproved, but he's no high volume three point shooter as he makes just less than one per game. His getting to the line alot and shooting a high percentage when he gets there will make him a capable scorer for a number of years into the future.
