What about J.R. Smith?

Post#1 » by ProcessDoctor » Wed Mar 26, 2008 10:00 pm

Would you guys want J.R. Smith on this team next year? He will be a RFA after the season ends, and isn't exactly best friends with George Karl. Management does seem to like him, however. He would fill our need of having a good shooter on our team, and would still have the athletic and up-and-coming ability that many other players on this team have. He shouldn't be too expensive, and if necessary I personally wouldn't mind doing a sign and trade involving either Green or Carney for him. I know he has a history of being a punk, but he would be in check with Iguodala and Miller around him. They are much better leaders than anyone he had on the Hornets and also on the Denver team he's on now. What do you guys think?

I have a very small interest in Smith. Smith has had such an up and down career already that I'm not prepared to break or even bruise the bank for him. Unless we were foolish and threw a boatload of money at him, I doubt that that Smith would sign here since he would most likely be a bench player (assuming that we obtain a starting PF this off-season).

I would be lukewarm about Smith. He's a below average defender, and he's one dimensional, but that one dimension is sorely needed on this team. I think he's a better fit, with more upside, than Willie, but I wouldn't break the bank for him. The fact that he's worn out his welcome on two teams before the end of his rookie contract despite a career point per 2 minute ratio scares me.

Talent wise, hes one of the better free agents out there. But there will always be questins about his work ethic and his effort on defense. He also gets trigger happy often. He's like a young Ricky Davis. The players I can see keeping him in check are superstars like Duncan, Kobe, or Garnett. If we can get him for relatively cheap and get rid of Green's contract then maybe.

We could definitely use his shooting prowess, but I don't think he fits very well in our team concept. He jacks up almost any open look (though improving) which might be more acceptable if he weren't so inconsistent. His defense is the same, up and down. He puts forth the effort defensively, but isn't a very smart defender making him average at best. Also, over the last 2 months he's seemed to have matured quite a bit and gotten his game under some control. All that said, I would gladly take him on this team as a player with potential (far more than Green or Carney), but I wouldn't break the bank for him.

No. This team is building with high character kids the last thing you want to do is add someone like JR Smith.

He's a backburner option for me. If we strike out in obtaining a PF, I think I would offer Smith a mid-level type deal... well, slighty more. If my choice is to pocket the $11MIL in space that we have or spend $6MIL of it on Smith... I would probably offer Smith a 3 year/$19MIL deal and go into next season with the following lineup.

Miller
Smith
Iguodala
Young
Dalembert

Because Miller expires the following summer, I believe we would then end up with somewhere around $14-$15MIL in space the following year which could then be used to once again try and obtain a PF or a PG if LouWill isn't able to take over for Miller.

Nope ... we don't need any potential "punks".

He's talented but his shot selection is highly suspect. I would rather see the Sixers take a stab at a multi-tool guy like Childress for the entire mid level or Nachbar for the money that would be spent on Smith.

He sucks while even playing with Iverson and Melo. He would come here and look worse. He was in Karl's doghouse for so many games earlier this season. Willie Green is a better basketball player.

Not a fan of his at all. Bad shot selection, no defense, extremely streaky, and pretty well documented attitude problems. I love watching this team right now. I want no part of him on our team.

A gunner with no conscience, plays no D and has a questionable attitude. He is the kind of guy that will put up hollow, semi-big numbers on bad teams for most of his career. I'll pass.

So no one would want him over Willie Green? Not even for a sign and trade? His stats this year aren't too bad. I know you guys see him as a punk, but the guy can be a one man comeback at times and will fill a HUGE need as our 3 point shooter. Plus I wouldn't say his defense is terrible. I mean his d is better than Willie Green's. I'm not saying I would want him to start, but putting him in Korver's old role isn't too much to ask for is it?

He has a horrible attitude. NO didn't want him because he would never listen to the coaches. Constantly had to remind him to get back on defense, let alone play defense. I'd rather have Korver back.

I'm far from a Willie Green fan, but Willie is the better defender and it isn't really close. Also, I don't really consider Smith a pure shooter. He is way too inconsistent. I can't think of any scenario I would be happy with him being on this team.
