Nene Hilario
Let's just be clear. His contract is horrid. Four more years at 9, 10, 11, 11 mil per yr... That's seriously taxing. BK territory for sure.
But those are still better numbers than Zach Randolph. And unlike a Z-Bo, he plays legit defense when healthy. Big if, indeed. Certainly, adding him would be a huge risk.
But the Nuggets will be looking for salary cap relief in a big way this summer. With K-Mart healthy again, Rex Chapman might salivate at the chance to dump Nene for WG + Evans + Booth.
Just speculating whether Nene resides on Stefanski's white board of PFs... He showed flashes of nastiness early in his career, and personally I've always liked him when healthy. He has major weight issues and cancer issues. This move could backfire like a boomerang in flames.
I'd be frightened to add him to the salary structure. But Evans and WG are each locked-in for 3 more years anyways. A healthy Nene would provide much more for this team than WG + Evans. Though expensive in dollars, he is a classic buy-low value in terms of trade bait right now. Any interest? I'm undecided. Last resort option?

Not even...No more bad contracts for this team. I would much rather, sacrifice one of our young players and break the bank for someone who still has injury risks like Brand, instead of getting Nene... He hasn't even played a full season, so he doesn't even get an oppurtunity to develop his potential.

Even if the Sixers trade their draft pick and don't sign a FA, I will not be for trading for Nene and that contract.
Desperation is a stinky cologne and there's no reason for us to stink again.

Nene is exactly the kind of power forward we shoul dtake a risk on. He's a two-way player and would complement this team beautifully.
But the health risks are very big. So it all comes down to who we give up to get him. If we can move Willie + Reggie + 1-2 mill of our cap space to get him we're really only taking on a few more mill. a year and that seems to me a no-brainer risk. But I doubt Denver does that.
If we can just dump Willie's contract, it seems a lot less clear it's worth it.

Take a cue from the Bulls, good young team, salary cap under control, lacked beef in the frontcourt, took an unnecessary flyer by giving Ben Wallace a contract about the same size as Nene's remaining contract. That turned out real well.
If this team was capped out anyway and needed one piece for a championship run. like Phoenix did for Shaq, and is willing to risk the future you might go for it. Not Nene, not now.

When he's healthy (actually even when he plays hurt) his man-defense is always there. I think Tim Duncan said he's the #1 player he dreads going against. So that's a big positive.
But the feeling in Philly is so good right now though that i'm not sure you want to take a risk on another oft-injured PF with a big contract (although its truly nothing like Webber's situation).
If you could get rid of Willie Green and someone else unimportant though I don't see why not. Nene is a good character guy. Very likeable person. When he was healthy last year he was a 16/9 guy in the Western Conference.

From a talent perspective, I think a lot of the earlier posts have already captured Nene's value. He's a solid low-post player and a solid defender that runs the floor very well. And he's very much a team player.
When healthy.
Nene's injuries for the most part have been due to immaturity in the off-season. He's a celebrity in Brazil and loves the night life that goes with it. As a result, he has a reputation of coming into the pre-season overweight and out of shape.
It would be a bit of a risk for the Sixers to go after him. Perhaps his recent bout with cancer will open his eyes a bit and will accelerate his maturation. I tend to be conservative about these things and prefer that people actually demonstrate a willingness to make the necessary changes.
On the personal side, he is close with Jason Smith. Nene is engaged to a young lady who is the sister of Jason Smith's long-time girlfriend. I'm sure they and their families would love it if they could be teammates. I would guess they would prefer that it be in Denver rather than Philladelphia, given that the girls' family is from Colorado and so is Jason.

If I am going to take a risk on a guy with a big contract I want his career season high averages to be a little more impressive. Nene's best season numbers are 12.2 ppg, 7.0 rpg, 0.9 bpg and he has never shot higher than 69% on FT's. Nice FG % numbers sure, but the rest are undewhelming. If someone claims his numbers are low due to a lack of health and/or inexperience, that is an answer in itself why not to take a risk on this guy. I'd rather take the risk on Z-Bo even if Nene is a better guy/team mate, although I don't really want him either.

Oh noez, not potential!
Greg Oden has potential. Nene has a history of injury problems and a lack of work ethic. He also has a huge contract which I can safely say he'll never earn.

Yeah they would. Had they acquired Artest before the trade deadline, all the reports were saying that they were going to dump Nene to the Nets for Magloire and Nachbar for cap relief. Apparently Nene came in and begged the FO not to trade him because he'll be back for the playoffs, so they kept Nene based on that and Karl not wanting to trade Kleiza. I'm sure the FO is getting sick of paying him all that money (and they're well over the luxury tax threshold). They won't trade him for expirings during the offseason, but if he's still the same oft-injured Nene, they will look to dump him at the trade deadline for expirings.
Nene is a very solid player when healthy, worth every penny. However, with the pieces we have (cap space + draft picks), I'd rather take my chances with those than take the risk of Nene. If push comes to shove and we can't get the PF we're looking for, I may take the chance on Nene.
