I see some teams to work with on draft day

Post#1 » by is1531 » Wed Apr 23, 2008 3:47 pm

I see Seattle has 6 picks in the 2008 draft and Portland has 4. If the 76ers want more picks, those are the teams to negotiate with. With the Nets having 2 picks in round 1, the Nets may not want two picks, so the 76ers might be able to work a deal with the Nets. However a deal with the Nets would probably cost the 76ers Jason Smith, but it would give the 76ers two shots at landing a PF in round 1. Then they can trade their ist round pick for 2009 to land a 2 guard.

If the draft boards are accurate, Charles Rhodes will not even be drafted. We should bring him to camp as a free agent. Let him play in the summer league.

I love DJ Augustine, but I do not see us drafting DJ, as long as Lou Williams is here.It should come down to Thompson, Speights, Koufos and with extra picks, we could land Douglas Roberts or Courtney Lee.

Given the youth of the team, I'd recommend not acquiring even more marginal draft picks.

If anything, I'd consider this the right year to seriously think about trading the entire draft slate as part of the package for a quality veteran PF.

We only have 1 pick in the entire draft right now. No NBA team is going to give us a good PF for the 16th pick. I have a lot of faith in this draft. I want the 76ers to get a big piece of the pie. Make some deals, Ed,lol.

Philly needs to hope that Willie Green ups his value in these playoffs so they can package him, and maybe our cap space in order to get a true PF who can score inside. But who ? This team cannot have two 6ft, 2 and under SG's in Willie and Lou Williams. And Lou is way more valuable for us to keep as an off the bench scorer. Then we must draft a PG at 16 or 17, wher ever we select to groom under Miller for a season. Someone like Collison would be very nice. His great speed and defense would be valuable.
I like Augustin, but he is too short and not athletic enough for this league. I guess we could wait another year to draft a PG replacement IF we extend Miller a season or 2 after next year. Then use both our 2009 1st rounders to try and move up to grab a higher rated PG in 2009. But that's a iffy scenario.

I think our offseason plan needs to be a cohesive one, and we should commit to obtaining a PF presence that can score for us and a shooter who isn't a defensive liability. Where we get those two either draft or FA or a combination doesn't matter to me. Let's just get ourselves options so we can become a better overall team. I'd just as soon draft a PF and trade for or sign a scorer as I would sign Brand or something and draft a shooter.

I do not see the 76ers taking a PG in this draft. Ed will address our immediate needs, which is PF and SG.

If I were Seattle I would try and get Reggie Evans back. They could use his toughness, with the young team that they have.

The 76ers have no future, if Willie Green is the starting 2 guard. The goal is to replace him next year with a better 2 guard. I still insist that the 76ers will get more picks in this draft.

If the 76ers are unable to sign a free PF, do not be shocked to see the 76ers sign Josh Childress and trade Carney. At Least with Childress, you know what you are getting every night. Childress and Williams coming off the bench would guarantee that the 76ers have 2 good bench players. I think Childress is a very underated player. Green could do a good job off the bench along with Evans.

I am not going to buy tickets to 2008-2009 76ers games, until I see a big upgrade on this roster. I will not let this playoff run confuse me from long term goals. I want what the Spurs have.

I'm still concerned that Thad and Iggy play the same position and no one seems to want to address that issue. I'm still on the trade Igoudala wagon...not that I don't like him, but he may be odd manout unless his jumper gets WAY more reliable

People do not address it because they believe that Iggy can start at SG.

Iggy has been around here long enough to prove that he isn't a NBA SG. It's obvious that the Sixers coaching staff aren't under the same belief that many Sixers real GM forumites are under in regards to Iggy being a NBA SG that can start at that position for the rest of his career and not simply as spot duty. Iggy is a SF that does a good job guarding SG. That's it. Willie Green starts because he can penetrate the defense and get layups in the halfcourt set with little effort...

Why not try Iguodala and Young together at 2/3 for a year or two before you give up on one of them? At their age they aren't going to lose any value. I thinl you have given up hope they will woprk well together too quickly. Both are still improving, and the combination is +9 per 48min (best combo on the team.)

If they can compliment each other offensively they would make a devistating combo on the defensive end, boards and on the break.

I have some issues with Mr Iggy, but you can win a title with Iggy, if you surround him with more talent. He needs to stop tipping his keys when he is going to drive to the basket or take a shot. He starts swinging his arms as wide as they can go, so I know a shot is coming.

If I knew we could get Kevin Love, then I would not have mentioned the other players. I have to assume Love will be selected before our turn comes. Ideally, I would prefer to have the following roster for the 2008-2009 76ers. This roster would allow you to trade for a 2 guard in the summer, but our ist round pick in 2009, could take care of that on draft day. In fact, we do not have to trade the 2009 pick to draft a 2 guard. We could buy into another pick.

Young SF, Carney
Brand PF , Jason. Smith,K Love, Evans
Big Sam C , Jason Smith
Miller PG , Lou
Iggy Sg , Green

Players change their roles through their careers. Look how different AIG's role is now than when AI was here. I expect him to further adapt his game if he is moved tpo SG. He already has dramatically improved his outside shooting and cut down on turnovers- which should help him be an effecive SG. No doubt he can guard the position (he often guards PG's), and should be able to take advantage of mismatches in the post.

AIG at SG will have to change his role somewhat, but he already plays more of a SG role on offense in that he is their primary scorer on many sets. AIG may not be a tremendous finisher (yet) but he can get past his man and pass off the drive. you add Thad on the wing and a legit offensive PF on the weakside, and AIG should be even more effective in the set offense.

Why is it that nobody seems to think that Thad can't play PF ?
I mean why not ? He's only 19. He's gonna get bigger and stronger, and probably even taller.

I find it funny how some fans wanted us to go all out for the Hawks Smith this off-season to play PF for us. But yet Josh isn't any bigger than Thad is right now.

Thad may be schooled by some bigger, and stronger PF's down low. But on the other hand, Thad can take them to school with his quickness and versatility.
Why not keep Thad at PF for the time being IF we cannot acquire a big time PF this off-season ? That way Iguodala can stay at SF, and we can try to upgrade our SG spot over Willie.

Makes sense to me.

Everyone agrees that Iggy would be better with better players around him but somewhere along the line everyone BUT ME realizes that the Sixers have a salary cap and the salary that Iggy is looking for is not friendly at all to being able to acquire the kind of talent necessary for him to be the 4th best player on the team like he needs to be in order for the Sixers to be a championship franchise...Iggy is looking for #2 or even #1 money, no one knows what number his agent gave the SIxers but we all know that in fact he turned down a $57 million dollar deal which is #2-3 money in the NBA when Iggy is and WILL NEVER BE better than a #3-4 and right now he is a #4-5.

As soon as Iggy becomes a wing player again, and not this quasi-franchise player that is allowed to pound the ball and create his own shot outside of the flow of the offense, his scoring numbers will drop. I will throw up when the day comes that Iggy is averaging 16 ppg while getting paid $14.2 million in the 3rd year of his contract...That day is coming, book it...

SendEm:

You know...I simply ignore your rants most of the time, but this is a time where the majority of regulars on this forum (myself included) are so excited about what we see happening with this team...and for you to turn EVERY SINGLE F*CKING THREAD into an anti-Iggy rant is so unbelievably self-absorbed...

This forum is a community of Sixers fans, and like a potluck dinner, when everybody brings something of value that everybody can share, the community as a whole benefits. As I sit here right now, I cannot think of a single thing that you have brought of "value" to the collective discussion on this forum...other than your obsessive rants about Iggy. Nothing.

And not only do you find a way to rip Iggy in threads about him or in game threads (except in game thrreads where Iguodala has a good game, in which case - like a cockroach when the light is turned on - you go scurrying to a crack in the floorboards), you take innocent threadslike this one and find a way to get off with your anti-Iggy agenda.

I'm done.

Why would anyone be Anti-Iggy ?
The guy is maybe the best " Team " oriented player in this entire league. Is he a true franchise player ? Probably not. But he is super athletic. Shoots every bit as good from the field as Kobe ever has. And plays better defense too.
I think he does lack a certain mentality to truly take alot of shot attempts when needed. But his versatility and great character are
what we need. And what 99 % of the other league teams would die to have.

You could be right, and he might end up being slightly overpaid when he is 28. The number you threw out there (14.2 year 3) would be if he started at 11.5M next year - a 5 yr 70M contract. I would agree this would be above market value, but I won't quible too much about numbers.

The Sixers will be over the cap in 3 years, as is 95% of the league. Comcast will be willing to pay if the team is a winner. I see how paying AI and CWebb 40M and fielding a loser is a deep hole. I don't see how paying AIG 13M a few years from now and having hime the 3rd best player on a contender would be such a big problem.

Lets project some contenders salaries forward by three years (what they will make or would make projected forward their current sary with normal raises.) Projecting salaries forward, vet top teams pay their core 3-4 players about 50M.

Look at San Antonio- total core about 50M
Duncan 24M
Parker 13.5M
Gnobli 12M (a 10% raise over his salary in 2 years.)

Pistons- total core about 50M
Billups 13M
Sheed 15M
Prince 11M
RIP 12M

If Iguodala ends up being the Sixers 3rd best player and is making 13M the Sixers would be in good shape.

Its more important to develop Young as another one of the core players and trade or sign a star than it is too worry over whether AIG will be making 11M or 13M in 3 years. Either way talent and not the cap will determine how good the Sixers can be.

Whats wrong with playing Iggy at the 2? What about Thad at the 4? Even if these players dont play at these positions the majority of the time, they will spend time there. Saying they cant co-exist is stupid.

Remember how bad Iggys jumper was last year? He improved drasticly in 1 year. Im sure next year, he will be even better. He is never going to be a "shooter", but he can easily become good enough where the defense has to respect his jumper enough that he can blow by them when they do.

Yes, I see the argument of us not being a good outside shooting team, but shooting doesnt necessarily have to be addressed in the starting lineup. Shooters off the bench are very important in this league.

Louis Williams will slowly get more and more minutes and he has shown confidence and range. Willie can stretch the D at times. Carney has improved his 3pt shooting as well and if Thad adds the 3 to his arsenal, he will be a scary player.

good post Tk. Sendem is so blonded by his iggy hate that he cant see reality some times. (so what if Iggy gets 11mil and only gets 16-18/game. If he is the leading scorer, Yes, thats a problem, but the scenario your describing suggests he is taking a backseat to a better scorer, which im completely ok with. Whats wrong with our 2nd option getting 16-18 ppg?)

I agree that Iggy isnt a franchise player, but if it comes down to paying him or losing him, you gota pay him, this team would take a HUGE step backwards if we lost Igoudala. Im not oppossed to trading him, but in a sign and trade, we will most likely get a similar caliber player, for the same salary, so whats the point in that? Unless its a premier big man, you may as well just keep him.

I like your post tk76 but I am CONVINCED that Iggy is a #4 on a Chip team REGARDLESS of who the other 2 players are. A team could have Kobe at SG and Chris Paul at PG, if Iggy is CLEARLY the 3rd best player on that team then they WILL NOT WIN AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP. Iggy is not as good as Tayshaun Prince but he is on pace to make more money than him.... Tayshaun's a miss match on a nightly basis with his post-up ability and 3 point shot. Let's not forget his defense. There's a reason why Tayshaun is on the mens Olympic team.

We will need the money to be able to have 3 players on our roster that are better than Iggy. Miller is 1 of those players but his age MAY prevent him from being able to play at his CURRENT level for the next 5 seasons that Iggy is signed as a Sixer. Dalembert's huge contract also eats into the cap potentially robbing us of the ability to afford one of those 3 players under the salary cap. It looks like 2 of those 3 players that MUST be better than Iggy will have to come through the draft while playing on rookie contracts. Thad may be 1 of those players. That leaves another player that must be drafted. I figure the 3rd player will be signed as a free agent with the cap money that we CURRENTLY have available. I did NOT count Miller as one of those "3 players that MUST be better than Iggy" because it would be a bad basketball decision to project Miller being able to play at his current level for the next 5 seasons...
