Bigger offseason need, SG or PF?

Post#1 » by i<3basketball » Thu Apr 24, 2008 1:05 pm

From watching the sixers during parts of the season and both playoff games, it seems to me that SG is a bigger need than PF. I know we need another big body at the 4 but we can get away with Thad Young and Reggie Evans there. At SG however, we have Willie Green who, in my opinion, has been the player holding the sixers back a little. We have Louis Williams, but he is small and is best as a 6th man scoring sparkplug. Willie is undersized for the 2 at only 6'3" and doesn't shoot well from distance (29% from 3). From watching these recent games it has dawned on me that SG is a bigger need than PF. What do you think?

I think we need both parts to have a inside outside game. The 76ers are still a long way off from a title. Hopefully, Ed can rip off a few teams. Tony makes the right draft pick. I think the 76ers will take Speights or Thompson, then deal for another pick to draft a 2 guard. Maybe that would land the 76ers Douglas Roberts,Courtney Lee or Shan Foster.

Biggest need = franchise player. I don't care what position he plays, there are enough multi-position players to fill in around him.

i disagree b/c i think that iggy is our solution at sg. thaddeus' ideal position is at sf and iggy's length, height and strength would be much more of an advantage at the 2 than the 3. tayshaun is shutting down iggy which wouldn't happen if he was matched up with rip.

getting a good pf would actually solve both problems at one time much better than getting a two and leaving thaddeus at the 4.

AI2TY5:

Don't know if I agree with that, bro...what we need is a player who can score the ball in the guts of a game against a team like the Pistons, Celtics, Spurs...and - unless we see dramatic improvement in Iguodala's handle and outside shooting consistency - I would be open to considering getting a stone-cold ASSASSIN at the SG, and moving Iggy to the 3 and Thad to the 4.

It comes down to what makes the most sense as a whole...with the current roster...with our cap-room...with the #16 pick...and I still think this team has enough needs 9at least 1-2 more impact guys) that I don't want to spend 100% of our time and energy singularly focusing on getting that Horford/Boozer/Jefferson-like PF if we have the option of getting a really special SG.

Use our cap space, Dalembert and a lil creativity to get Dirk to be our 4. Dallas will be shaking things up when they get swept by NO.

Dalembert and Artest to Dallas
Dirk to Philly
Cap space, picks, players to Sac

i do understand what you're saying and it does make sense in terms of improving the team, but looking back at the teams that have won championships instead of just contending they have all had a very strong low-post threat with the exception of the jordan-era bulls. that being the case i think that for the long-term success of the team their best shot is to go after acquiring a stud power forward in free agency or trade. even looking at the nuggets and warriors who have stud scorers they don't get far in the playoffs due to the lack of a low-post threat.

Move Iguodala to the 2, and Thaddeus to the 3. There goes the problem at SG.

Go after the PF, unless there is a chance of getting an All-NBA-type swingman.

We definitely need to pick up a starting caliber power forward. Reggie Evans and Jason Smith just aren't cutting it. Preferably, the power forward has some low post scoring ability, decent rebounding skills, and hustles on the floor.
