A Look Back at BK's Trades

Post#1 » by shadowTerp » Wed Jun 25, 2008 2:37 am

After lurking for the past few months, I thought this topic would be a neat way to start posting.

Almost all of us agree about our ex-GM. BK was a good talent evaluator, but overpaid on contracts repeatedly. He also was very busy on draft day with trades... but, I don't believe I've heard a consensus on his trading ability. I wanted to look at the trades he made over the last few years, grouping them where appropriate and see who is still on the team and what the other teams received. And then talk about what you guys think of the trades now.

The Carney Deal (and Subsequent Trades)
Carney, Hill, cash <-> Sefolosha, Fesenko

This is really two trades, the 2006 draft day trade of Carney and the third trade in the 2007 draft, where we moved back and took Hill. While I like Thabo's versatility, if Carney continues to mature and improve like he did towards the end of last season, then I prefer him on our ball club. Hill nor Fesenko have really shown anything yet. I'm not sure you can say whether this was a good deal, yet.

The Iverson Deal (and Subsequent Trades)
Miller, Smith, cash, cap room <-> Iverson, McFarlin, Cook, Kaponen, 2009 2nd

The one major frustrating thing to me about the Iverson deal compared to the other recent 'superstar' trades (Kidd, KG, Allen, Gasol)... the other teams received young talent (Devin Harris, Al Jefferson, Ryan Gomes, Javaris Crittendon, Marc Gasol, Jeff Green, Delonte West). The only young talent we received is Smith, and we gave up Cook and Kaponen in the process (since we wasted one of the draft picks received).

Even though Miller has provided us with several wins and a playoff birth, to me it's only when we trade him for young talent that this set of deals will come even close to balancing out. The cap room (from Smith) is nice (the Webber buyout helped with that)... but until we use it, BK didn't get good value here.

The Evans Trade
Evans, Sanchez <-> Hunter, B. Jones

I know that some of you are not big fans of Evans. While his PER isn't good, I love the toughness, energy and locker room presence he provides (apparently, his work ethic rubbed off on Carney, for example). While I wish his contract wasn't as large or long, I definitely think he provided an upgrade over Hunter. Losing an excess wing (who bounced around NBA rosters like a pinball) didn't hurt.

Overall Trades
2007 Offseason
Evans, Sanchez <-> Hunter, B. Jones

2007 Draft
Ja Smith (#20) <-> Cook (#21), 2009 Second
Byars (#42), cash <-> Koponen (#30)
Hill (#55), cash <-> Fesenko (#38)

2006-07 Season
Miller, Joe Smith, 2007 #21, 2007 #30 <-> Iverson, McFarlin

2006 Draft
Carney (#16), 2007 #38, cash <-> Sefolosha (#13)

It might be a little early to completely judge a few of the more recent moves you mentioned here. Evaluating some of his older moves where most of the direct consequences have long since happened would allow you to evaluate King's entire tenure better.

Truthfully though, it just might be completely impossible to ever judge Billy King's record accurately without being privy to some of the behind the scenes details. For example, did Billy King ever try and trade Iverson or otherwise rebuild 3-5 years ago but was prevented by management and ordered to try and patch together a winner? If something like that happened, it might be easier to understand why he made the moves he did.

Something to keep in mind with the Iverson trade was that BK didn't have much leverage since Snider said on national television that Iverson was gone. That had to hurt his ability to deal him a lot.

I'm nervous about Stefanski's drafting. I would prefer for BK to be in that war room tomorrow night based on the picks Stefanski was involved with on the Nets. I'm dreading a Koufos, Ajinka(sp) pick.

comparing thabo and carney is kinda useless, since there's no indication that had we not traded back we would have taken him. I look at the Carney "trade" and evaluate like a draft pick (i.e. whether there was anyone drafted 13 or after that I would have liked more than Carney). And the answer, to me, is clearly yes.

Evans played a decent role for us in the playoffs. Hunter wouldn't got off the bench.
