"Speights was the guy they were going to pick. They liked his size and athleticism and runs the floor the way we want to play. Has chance to be back to basket player with both hands. Only 20 years old. Needs to be nurtured. Feel he's a piece to the puzzle and really high on his upside. Speights is coming in tomorrow. Speights was ecstatic on the phone".
Question session:
(Can't hear the questions)...feel the 16th pick would be a big guy. Got a guy with VERY BIG UPSIDE. This kid is a talented player at 6'11. The 11 million is extremely important to get the free agent this summer...Yesterday, the decision to pick Speights was unanimous - actually, one person had Speights second of the entire scouting crew....During season, both DiLeo and Stefanski followed him and watched him progress....Speights went higher and higher in their mix...he was one of the three top picks they wanted that was still on the board at 16 (so we didn't settle - actually, according to Stefanski, Speights was their #1 pick of the three)....they will look for a 3 man or specialist who can make some shots and another PG now....Lou Williams is the backup to Miller right now and also fighting for starting job at the 2...July 1st will look to see who's opted out and see who's restricted and who's not..only Sixers and Memphis have the cash to make real moves and we have trade opportunities too so doesn't have to be a FA....Surprised at one guy who fell but didn't mention his name - probably Author...said he's VERY happy with the scouts and feel very good with the guy we picked...issues on Speights were his toughness and willingness to compete but Stefanski and DiLeo have scouted him all year and from what they saw, these were not issues at all, according to Stefanski, Speights is a VERY athletic kid who knew how to play; when they watched him last season, he "banged"..the reason Sixers didn't bring him back twice is because they didn't want to show their hand...did take him out to dinner though and got to talk to him....decided they'd seen enough at that point and knew he was their guy. Ok, my hands are hurting now from typing so fast. Hope you guys enjoyed the interview.

Lou battling for the starting 2?
Skates wrote:Lou battling for the two is just another way of saying they want to replace WG. Lou will be battling with Thad. If Thad is ready to start at the 3, Iggy moves to the 2, if not all he ahs to do is beat out WG and Carney, neither of whom may be here by the time the season starts.
