So Long Shav, Lou A, and Herb Hill
According to Phil Jasner...
Because the Sixers did not make qualifying offers, forwards Shavlik Randolph, Louis Amundson and Herbert Hill have become unrestricted free agents, joining guard Kevin Ollie. Backup center Calvin Booth exercised his player option to return for about $1.1 million
We knew Ollie was gone and I was pretty sure that Shav and Lou Amundson would find themselves unemployed but I'm a little surprised Herb Hill is gone just like that. I know STChaser was expecting him to add a lot to this team but it looks like Herb's career will never involve him suiting up in a Sixer uni.
Clearing out these 3 big men would seem to go along with the idea that the team is trying to acquire DeAndre Jordan. Jordan could certainly take over their role on the team but wearing a suit every game.

Yeah, I had higher hopes for Hill but I guess with Speights now on board and with Stefanski looking to acquire another PF, they just figured it wasn't worth it. And besides, as you said yourself, we NEED a backup 5 more than another backup 4 - especially when you consider that we still have Evans. I really hope that we can still manage to get DeAndre Jordan.

While this cannot be viewed as good news for Hill, I'm not so sure this is the end of the line for him either. Didn't Sixerfan say that Hill was going to be on Philly's summer league roster? If so, Philly may still be interested in him, but will not commit to anything until they know he is fully back from his injury and worth a roster spot. I think it's clearly over for Randolph and Amundson, but not quite yet with Hill.
For that matter, I could see Ollie back again if the team isn't able to acquire a reasonably priced veteran PG.

I imagine it was more for cap space than anything else. That is like 700k, right? They may re-sign Hill after the FA dust settles.

Last I heard he was supposed to be on the summer team..but I can tell ya I didnt expect him to not get the qualifying offer. Not sure the reasoniing behind that...maybe they plan to keep Evans and felt that they had enough bigs with new PF, Evans, Speights, Dalembert, Smith and Booth.
I could see Ollie back too...but only if he took the league min.

I thought it's clear they're doing it to generate more cap space. By not making the qualifying offer the only risk you're taking is that he signs elsewhere. But if we really want him and gave him a guaranteed min. contract, I seriously doubt anyone else would give him guaranteed money.

I thought they would have tried to keep hill or shav.
I kinda bummed because I thought shav really brought it when he got minutes and we never got to see herb in action

I'm just guessing here, but I would imagine that if you extend a qualifying offer, it is regarded as a cap hold and counts against the amount you have available to spend on FA's. Thus, they are certainly not going to tie up anything they might need to go after guys like Brand or Smith if they somehow are able to get one of the two (highly doubtful though). Once the dust settles there, they can revisit whether or not to bring Hill back. I'm not sure it's the amount of bigs however, if they are truly still looking at what it would take to get D. Jordan.
As for Ollie, I always thought his only option to remain in the league was at the minimum or close to it. I bet he'd sign for it too. Like Hill however, I think he's in a wait and see mode.

kinda disappointed to hear about randolph and hill. i could see them giving hill another try out type thing during the summer league, though. he was injured and missed the entire season when he was supposed to miss 6 weeks, so it's probably better to not give him guaranteed money if he can't play anymore.
as for randolph, i kind of felt like cheeks never gave him a chance. it took him a while to recover from his injury, but he did and he only played like 2 games. he was good for us until the injury.

I still like Shav, but understand why he wasn't given a QO. I'm surprised by Hill, and somewhat disagree with it. If they do strike out, I hope he's brought back for the minimum.

Perhaps all this is, is Ed trying to maximize his cap space and then he can sign Herb Hill to the minimum at the end of the summer. I think this plan would be completely thrown out of the window if Ed can acquire Jordan.

The only reason to extend a qualifying offer is to make a player a restricted free agent or to use bird rights to exceed the cap to sign them. For someone like Hill, the sixers can go back at the end of FA and use the minimum salary exception to give him a 2 year contract if they want to bring him back.

I hope hill at least gets to camp. As long as evans is on the final roster and we get a stud power forward through trade or free agency i will be happy with that.

Viva La Shav
He brought it in his excrutiatingly limited minutes he was allotted.
He will flourish somewhere else into being an effective, high energy 7th / 8th man if given the minutes.
