Carney & Booth to T-Wolves?

Post#1 » by tjm384 » Tue Jul 8, 2008 8:46 am

Philadelphia 76ers forward Rodney Carney has been told he will be traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves, the centerpiece of a package that could free as much as $2-3 million in additional salary-cap space for the Sixers to offer free agents Elton Brand or Josh Smith, league sources said Monday night.

Two league executives believe Philadelphia has reached an agreement in principle to send Carney, center Calvin Booth and a future No. 1 draft pick to Minnesota for a $5 million-plus trade exception born of Mark Blount’s trade. Carney, 24, was told over the weekend by Philadelphia management that he had been sent to Minnesota, a source close to him said.

That would be the a very very bad trade for us.

Not only does we lose Carney and a future 1st (Jazz?) but we would also offer Smith after that almost a max contract which is way too much. I understand that we have to overpay for Smith to have a shot at him but that's is way too much for him.

Warrior fan here, to make a trade like that you guys must be getting Elton Brand, for sure. Congrats! Its better Philly gets him than LAC.

I'll trust ESPN anyday before I trust yahoo...

Marc Stein normally doesn't report anything unless there's some real steam behind it. If theres a 1st involved he'll let us know...

I really hope this deal goes through, with or without the 1st rounder.

Nothing is set in stone. This is just a play so we can gain more capspace and making a genuine run at Brand. Brand still has to accept our offer...He has the lure of Hollywood by playing in Golden State/La...

The only real incentive to join the sixers would be that the East has a far weaker conference, and chances of making the finals or the very least the ECF are much greater.

The downside of this move would be that we lost Carney for basically nothing after he showed signs of being able to consistently produce last year...

Without the 1st it's a good trade all of a sudden. We don't have to watch Booth anymore and if it's true that Brand wants to get back to the eastcoast we could really be in the running for him.

Miller - Iguodala - Young - Brand - Dalembert
6th Lou

vs.

Davis - Mobley - Thornton - Brand - Kaman
6th Gordon

The Sixers would have a slightly better S5 and better 6th man and a way better bench with Smith, Speights and Evans as big man backups, Green as SG backup... The Clippers have no bench at all. and it's way easier to make some noise in the east than it is in the west. I could see Brand coming if he get more money and a better chance to compete.
And all of a sudden Miller has to think a lot about resigning with the sixers.

Sixers general manager Ed Stefanski’s intentions are clear: Get into the bidding with the Los Angeles Clippers and Golden State Warriors for Brand or make an offer to the Atlanta Hawks’ restricted free agent, Smith, that will be too steep for the franchise’s ownership to match.

Getting Carney and Booth off the cap gives the Sixers the chance to offer a starting salary between $13 and $14 million a season to a free agent. The Sixers won’t know the precise figure until the league announces next season’s salary cap late Tuesday.

The 76ers have the luxury of going hard after Brand, 29, until he decides on a team. Most league executives still believe he’ll return to the Clippers for a five-year, $70 million deal, which is about $20 million less than the Warriors are offering. Nevertheless, this salary dump gives the Sixers the flexibility to get into the competitive bidding for Brand.

One league executive believes Brand has delayed his decision on returning to Los Angeles with hopes that Stefanski could cut this deal and make him a comparable offer to that of the Clips. He was born and raised in upstate New York, and has been intrigued with returning to the East Coast. Should the Sixers lose out on Brand, they’ll still be in position to turn their attention back to Smith, a 22-year-old rising star.

The Sixers have 7 players on their roster currently, 8 including Speights, and 9 including Brand and or Josh Smith.

Gerald Green was available for the longest time, I'm sure Carney can easily be replaced. I like this move.

The fact that we seemingly had to give up a first rounder for someone to take Rodney Carney off our hands, who did show flashes of being a good player last year, shows how much leverage we had around the league. Sad to see Carney go, would have liked to have Green go first, but I guess nobody wanted him. Hope him the best, the success of this trade will be based on whether we are able to get Brand or Smith. If we are not, then I have to say that it is most likely a failure.

I don't think it will take a future first round pick. I posted on the trade board yesterday booth plus cash for a trade exception. Really you can just give a little extra cash to a team like OKC and it costs them absolutely nothing since their trade exception is going to expire in the next week anyway.

How can Carney be the centerpiece if there is a future first rounder be included? I mean, a future first rounder might be more valuable than Carney.

And, I don't think that we will land Brand because I do really believe that he will end up with the Clipps. I think that we're going to land Josh Smith and possibly Ben Gordon, with this cap space. Both guys suits up perfectly with the Sixes. Josh Smith's versatility and athletic ability makes him a good fit in our team while Ben Gordon's scoring and shooting ability compensates for our poor half court offense.
There’s never been a time in history when we look back and say that the people who were censoring free speech were the good guys.

I think this means you have Brand if you can reach a certain number, and the fact that a young player like Carney has been told already seems to me that you'll have Brand in a Sixer uniform before the end of the week.

On RealGM, we get real excited about future 1sts, but in reality, if you add Brand, your 1st is most likely in the 20's. You might get a starter there, and you might not. The league is littered with "good but not great" players, but its guys like Elton Brand that have an impact on a team's history. In 2006-07, he was statistically a Top Ten player in the NBA -- a superstar. Personally, I think overpaying with "good" to get "great" is worthwhile, and would make the Sixers a great team to watch for years.

Man, you would have thought that a future 1st would have been enough to move Willie at least.
