What do we do with Andre Iguodala and Louis Williams?

Let me throw out there that we assume we pay them well? Figure Andre gets at least the 57 mil he rejected, and also lets assume Louis Williams thinks he deserves to get paid, more than he deserves, so lets use the full mid-level-exception money rate as his minimum contract.

I know you were very good about explaining a similar scenario last week, dabobds, but could someone walk me through this again, seeing as we have a confirmation on Elton Brand and a figure, and we're figuring on keeping Andre and LWill. ...

(unless, of course, we do a S&T with Atlanta for Josh Smith... hehe just conspiracy theorizing... )

Well, no cap space in the future for starters. We were expecting to let Miller walk this offseason before the trade I think. Our expected cap space was around 15 million. Brand will be making that. Killing our cap space. If we resign Andre Miller, luxury tax concerns could be a problem down the road.

This year we're obviously right at the cap. No MLE to use either.

Next year it depends on what we do with Iguodala/Williams this year. Let's assume Iguodala makes $11 million next year, and Williams makes $5 million. With those two contracts, we're looking at just about $57 guaranteed. That would probably yield about $3-$4 million in cap space next year if we don't re-sign Miller. Obviously, that can go up if we move Evans ($4.9 million in 2009) or Green (3.68 million in 2009). If we can move both of them, we can look at another $12 million in cap space next year. That's obviously a big if. What's more than likely is we'll either re-sign Miller, or we'll sign and trade Miller, and won't be direct players in FA next year. But we're also not in a position where we're in cap hell, either.

This is what will happen.

I agree with that assessment. I think Miller will age well because his game relies more on his BB IQ more than his athleticism. So I wouldn't mind if he stays for a few more years, if things seem to click with the team. We could than use the MLE to sign a shooter if we still need that.

Looking at dbods #'s for cap space next year assuming we resign AI and Lou, let's say Miller has not commited to us for 2009 and beyond, do you think we will be forced to move him in a deadline trade to get a guy who can be the future PG of this team (I still don't see Lou in that role)? If we only have 3-4 mil next offseason, that won't be enough to get an impact PG.

So having said that, would you move Miller to a team possibly looking to get an expiring contract? Maybe Felton, Hinrich, Mo Williams are options. If we are in the playoff race and Miller still indicates he's not sure about his future here, do you trade him for any of those 3 guys (assuming they are not traded somewhere else before the deadline)?

Do you want cap space or do you want to win. Teams that are under the cap arent in the playoffs. Cap space is to be used to get players. Once you have players you dont need cap space. The big problem now is keeping under the lux tax.

No doubt the 76ers look great on paper and from here out the trades, late 1st rd picks, MLE, health and a little luck is what decides if you win a title or not. Cap space should not be the goal anymore. Thats a goal for the bad teams not contenders.

What about 2008-09 roster?

Well, we need some kind of space to fill out our roster don't we?

Using vet and rookie minimum figures, this is where I think we will be...

Daly/Smith
Brand/Evans/Speights
Thad
Iggy/LW/ WG
Miller/Jamont Gordon/Kevin Ollie

Which means to me that we need about 3 more guys. I have no idea who they would be. We need a couple backup SF's or a SF and a SG.

But this lineup could work better...

This leaves us with a need for 3 players to fill out the roster still, but puts us in a better position in terms of depth. Bringing Thad, Evans, and Smith off the bench isn't bad for an Eastern Conference team. We would have 8 guys in either lineup that can play. I'm still holding out for a trade of either LW, Miller, Iggy, or Jason Smith that lands us the PG of the future OR the backup SF or SG we need.

Can we stop with the notion that Thad is going to be coming off the bench next year? Its his natural position, he's ready to start, he was ready at the end of last year. It sucks that we don't have room for Louis Williams, but we really need a spark off the bench, silly willay definitely won't get it done.

We need to make use of what little time we have of Elton Brand at peak physical fitness. He's probably going to be in his prime for another 3 years, and will start his decline around the 4th year of the contract.

Thad didn't get a chance to play his natural sf position last year, because of Willie Green, and this year Lou Williams is going to be a hindrance?

He's a potential allstar in the making, let him get his minutes. Now after 2-3 weeks, if that is under perfoming, I'd be more than willing to experiment with the lineup, but for now, leave Thad as a starter...

Some people just don't get it...that's why.

Iguodala was a huge piece of this team's success last season, and projects to be a huge piece of their future. I think most would agree that any player on the roster could be traded in the right deal, but some are anxious to see him moved for a journeyman swing player and a hot meal. Toronto would be a great fit for him if he's moved, but with the Brand signing, I don't see him going anywhere.
