What team would in a series? 01 Sixers or 08 Sixers?

Post#1 » by LongLiveHinkie » Thu Jul 10, 2008 4:38 am

If the 2001 Sixers that went to the Finals played in a 7 game series against the 2008 currently constructed Sixers(assuming we retain Iguodala and Lou Williams) who would win in a series?

It is hard to say because top to bottom this team is infinitely more talented, but that 2001 team played such amazing defense and had such great chemistry.

Damn, that's a tough one.. I'm going with 2001 team, although I think it would go to a game 7 triple overtime. But at the end of the day, Iverson would have willed his team to victory.

On the other hand, we've been there.. we've seen what that team can do.. This squad? we have no idea. In a year or two, who knows how good we'll be..

It would go to seven games and the 01 team would win...

Add a couple of shooters to the 08 sixers team, and they would go through...McKie gives the 01 sixers the edge. AI was more dominant than I've ever seen him that year. Even though he was chucking like crazy, he was just so damn good at scoring the ball, he would will the team to win. We don't have anyone who can take over on our current roster even with the addition of Brand.

i was thinking the same thing yesterday...its such a tough question.

Front court: 2008 sixers
Back court: 2001 sixers
coach: 2001 sixers
Bench: push
i think this team, set up like the 04 pistons has a much better formula for sucess than the 01 squad did. so that being said, im going to have to give it to them lead by Andre Millier, Andre Iguodala and Elton Brand.

2001 and it's not close imo.iverson was much better than anybody from our current roster while mutombo would have defend brand well.

01 Sixers would win, but it would definitely be close...

Raja would own with his usual 5 minutes of PT :D (reminisces of his little scoop shot in game 1 vs LA)

Interesting, but we really need to see the 08 team play before knowing their style/chemistry.

Both teams were defensively based, with the smallest players being the weak links. AI dominated the offense for the 2001 team, while the 2008 team would appear to be more well rounded with their top scorer being an inside/higher percentage producer. Comparing the players based on their defensive matchups

Miller<Iverson
Iguodala>Snow
Young=Lynch
Brand>Hill
Sam=Mutombo

I like the potential of the bench for the 08 team, but the 01 team did get nice production from their bench as well. Tough call this early in the game...let's revisit this one in February.

it's interesting and I actually thought about this yesterday.. Also, Snow was PG not SG. My opinions:

PG: Miller > Snow
SG: Iguodala < 2001 Iverson
SF: Young > Lynch (Young would be a monster with those kind of minutes)
PF: Brand > Hill
C: Sam < Mutombo (This one isn't close in my opinion)

Bench... I have to give it a split. McKie (6th of the year), Bell, Geiger, T-Mac, Nazr vs. Lou, Evans, Green, Speights, Smith. Both very good benches for their respective purposes (2001 - Supporting cast for Iverson, 2008 - Young/Talented/Potential).

Coach: Cheeks < Brown (coach of the year)

It's really hard to judge because the teams are complete polar opposites. 2001 was a team that had perfect chemistry and was built to win a championship with a perfect supporting cast for AI. 2008 is a much more talented team, but it'll be interesting to see how things mesh together. Of course, until this team gets to the finals the edge will always go with 2001.

Yashi...Iguodala<Any year Iverson has played in the league, no matter how much you try to spin it...Sure he's dominates the ball, but he's become a lot less selfish over the years, and with the right team he could still win a championship. That being said, I think there are only 2-3 teams in the league that could accommodate Iverson and go deep into the playoffs...

well.. touche. I should have elaborated a bit more. I feel that in some facets Iverson is much better, and in certain facets Iggy is much better. I think Iggy is much easier to build a team around, better defender, more efficient, etc. Iverson is able to create a shot for himself or another player at will which was HUGE, but extremely difficult to build around.

2001 was an amazing GM job because he was literally surrounded with a bunch of guys who didn't have an ego and were perfectly fine with playing tough, hard-nosed defense and OK with not getting the ball much on the offensive end.

I was just thinking about this yesterday. FWIW, whatifsports.com has the 08 Sixers winning in 6. Iguodala would have been series mvp.

Sorry to invade the sixers board but...

Sixers 01 wayy better than 08...

And I have a feeling Sixers and Raptors will have a rivalry going on...and who knows...we might meet each other deep in the playoffs like in 01?

ERic Snow would have completely shut Iguodala down, Iverson would have taken anybody off the dribble ( gone for 50 or more) , My main man George Lynch would have taken Thaddeus to the gym and in his spare time help out guarding Elton Brand, Tyrone Hill would have brought his construction hat and gone to work no matter who is guarding him and Mutombo would have blocked every ill advised shot Dalembert threw up. Don't even let me mention the Raja Bell , Geiger

IF you couldn't shoot outside jumpers forget about beating the 2001 Sixers unless you've got Shaq , the only guy who could have taken it to Mutumbo back then . Oh , who would have guarded Iverson , seriously ?!?!?!?!?!?!

DID I forget to mention how badly Larry Brown would have out-coached Maurice ????????????

How people see this as a close contest it beyond my wildest imagination and fantasy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THis would have been over in 5
