Elton Brand and the Clippers

Post#1 » by Rickdiculous » Fri Jul 11, 2008 11:54 pm

Theres been some talk in the media about Brand's departure from the Clippers as of recent. I know we had a shot at getting him, and I was pleasantly surprised when we did, but what I did not expect is some of the controversy surroung his departure. I hate to bring anything negative to the table after such a great signing for the Sixers, but I think its worthwhile to discuss given how slow things are on this board.

Its been reported that Brand gave his word to the organization that he'd come back if the organization would sign Baron Davis and offer 70 mil. It was also reported by Dunleavy that he had sent out text message to Dunleavy and other teammates insinuating he was going to resign and that he was looking forward to playing this upcoming season.

On the other hand Brand's agent has stated that no agreements were made and that nothing was set in stone as to what Brand was going to do. Brand also expressed some disappointment in how the Clipper's handled this whole situation. He liked how the Sixers were willing to go above and beyond to acquire him while the Clippers did not put forth the same effort. It was even reported that the Clippers gave him an ultimatum that Brand did not agree with.

A lot of Clippers fan feel betrayed and some are comapring him to Carlos Boozer. How do you guys feel about this whole situation?

In my opinion I think Brand was expecting to come back to the Clips, but he felt slighted by the Clipper's efforts in resigning him, so he got out of dodge. I'm sure there were other reasons such as wanting to go to the east that attributed to his decision, but ultimately I think he felt slighted by the Clipper's management. Either way the Sixers did enough in acquiring Brand and the clippers didn't. I don't think it was all about money that many are claiming, because the Warriors offered him a lot more than we did.

I couldn't care less about his situation with the Clippers. He is a Sixer and I'm absolutely thrilled about it. I really don't care if he burned the Clipps or not. To be honest, I think way to much talk is being made about it. Just bitter people is all.

Ya know, after so many off seasons of speculation and nothing happening, I find it funny that now that something BIG (and good) has finally happened to us, it;s just too good to be true. There just HAS TO BE something wrong about it.

I really think that the Clippers and Elton had a verbal agreement.

I mean, if the Clippers didn't expect Brand to resign with them, they shouldn't have resigned Baron Davis and instead just rebuild their team and sign a young player like Emeka or Josh Smith with their Money. And if there wasn't a verbal agreement, then the Clippers should have worked double time by offering him the maximum amount of money for Elton.

Well yeah, sterling is a "conservative" owner, and maybe he lowblowed Elton and his legendary agent David Faulk with not offering them the max salary they can give for Brand (i.e not giving him 6 years in the contract). But I don't think that it is enough to be a legit reason for Elton not to resign with them. Unless, he has a really big ego.

The huge difference between Elton and Carlos is Elton wasn't after for the money like Boozer, he could have just signed with the Warriors who were offering a larger contract for him. Instead Elton signed for lesser money with us.

Elton signed with the sixers, not because of the chance to win the championship, because he could have gotten it with the Clippers. With the three headed monster of Davis-Kaman-EB42. And not to mention Gordon and Thornton at the 2-3 positions. That has to be one of the most lethal team if ever assembled.

Elton signed with the Sixers because of the X-Factor. IMO, he signed because it is closer to where he grew up. And that he saw a bunch of guys who are all about winning, like what he saw during the finals with the Celtics.

All that matters right now is that the Elton Brand era has arrived in Philly.

I think Brand opted out and gave the Clips his word that he would sign to get his friend Baron a contract and a chance to be closer to home. If Brand didn't opt out and said he was coming back no way the cheap Clippers would've even went after Baron. And the Clips couldn't back out of the Baron deal once they lost Brand. He lied for his friend, Brand is still a good dude.

The way I heard it, they gave him an ultimatum and expected him to take it. Elton Brand did nothing wrong, the Clippers just treated him like ****. Like they always do.
