Sixers sign guard Royal Ivey

Post#1 » by LongLiveHinkie » Thu Jul 24, 2008 7:55 am

http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/six ... _Ivey.html

he Sixers have reached an agreement with the 6-4 backcourt player, who spent last season with the Milwaukee Bucks and the first three seasons of his career with the Atlanta Hawks.

Ivey, 26, will not officially sign a minimum-salary contract until Monday, which is believed to be for 2 years and include a significant guarantee. The league minimum for a player with four seasons of service is $854,957.

5.6 ppg... 2.1 assists... 39% FGs... 32% 3 pointers

Not really sure what to think about this one. Probably just a defensive oriented signing. He really doesn't fit the other pressing needs we have at the moment.

Well, he is a good 3pt shooter at or around 32 percent. Just below the league average of 35 percent.

We get a good 3ptshooter and a guy who can drive to the bucket when he gets the mins. He's also a good defensive guard.

ITK9: I thought the same thing, from what I remembered of Ivey, he was just another Atlanta Scrub. But then I checked out his stats and he's a suprising 6 foot 4. AKA Willie Green size.

32% isn't really good.

You expect people to be automatic from downtown?

I don't even know what that means. You said he is a good shooter, and 32% is below NBA average. Below NBA average doesn't equate to good.

Expectations have nothing to do with anything.

Ivey improved a lot last year. he was dreadful in atlanta in 06-07 but he showed great offense last year with Milwaukee...i like this signing.

Ivey is far from being a good three-point shooter. But that does not make that signing bad since you cannot do much wrong if you sign a defensive-minded player. He could very well fit next to LW who needs a defensive-oriented player next to his side. Willie G would not really fit the bill.

I like the signing. If we can further on obtain Novak, I believe we are set for the season.

I like the signing. Especially because Ivey went to my Alma Mater, Blair Academy. Would have been nice to have gotten Deng or Villanueva, but I can deal with Ivey. And that brings up another question; can Villanueva play the 3 and hit the 3? If so, would he be worth exploring considering we could use another SF behind Thaddeus and we need a perimeter shooter. With Speights now here, I wouldn't mind trading Evans and filler for CV.

I like the signing because I solve two different team need.

It solved our need to have a backcourt companion for Louis Williams, off the bench. With Ivey's height and defensive ability, this allows him to guard opposing SGs.

It also gives us another shooter, which has been a plus ever since KK left the team.

Please explain to me how Royal Ivey even begins to compare to Kyle Korver, much less be known as a shooter...

They both have the letter Y in their first name :D lol That's as far as any comparison goes though.

The comparison really wasn't to Korver, as it was to the fact that Ivey is a shooter.

Is he a particularly great shooter? No, no one had ever said that. But he'll knock down a few. And clearly a good defender, its a good signing.

Edit: I recall people loving Carney for his defense, and his "shooting". Well, his "shooting" is just 32 percent last year. A whole 1 percent increasement over last year ROFL.

LOL

I didn't in anyway compare Ivey to KK as a shooter. What I'm trying to say is that ever since KK left the team, we have been trying to acquire a shooter.

Is he a great shooter? No. But with with our team's ability to shoot 3s. He's one of the best 3pt shooters in our team right now. Maybe behind Louis Williams and probably Thaddeus Young. Yeah, better than Andre Iguodala. Now you can get your argument. :D

If I'm Stefanski, I tell Ivey to do nothing else but practice making 3's for the next 6 or so months. If he can fill this void for us, he's probably got a long term career with this team. And unlike Korver, Ivey has the athleticism and defensive ability to stay within the rotation for extended minutes. Ivey needs to be what Carney should have been for us and appeared to be turning into last year - an athletic 3 point shooter who can play in the up tempo offense.

Young, athletic, tough, defensive minded... Can't be too upset with this signing...
I really thought Junior Harrington had a slim chance to make this team... Guess Not...
Could this be bad news for Jamont Gordon?

Ivey and Reggie Evans will be good friends.

Royal Ivey of the Milwaukee Bucks has been suspended three games without pay for punching Chicago Bulls center Aaron Gray in the groin, it was announced today by Stu Jackson, NBA Executive Vice President, Basketball Operations.

The incident occurred with 10:48 remaining in the second period of the Bucks’151-135 loss to the Bulls on Monday, April 14 at the Bradley Center.

I was just about to post about this. I think Willie's gonna be traded for "the" shooter.

How is 32% better than most of the team???

Lou shot 36% from 3, and Iggy 32.9...Royal Ivey shot 32.7%, .2 less than Iggy, so I don't see how he's one of the best...

Sure he's top 3, but when the highest 3 point percentage is 36, thats not much of an accomplishment.

He is a good defender though, if you highlight that, I would have agreed with you. But please, lets not classify him as a shooter. His overall fg% was 39 last season, thats horrid!
