Growing up as a kid, I have always said gunner, referring to a player that shoots a lot and doesn't pass. Everyone I grew up with and knew also said gunner too. I've heard chucker now and then, but I've always thought of it as a term that was used in the 80's. To me, you don't chuck a basketball, you shoot it. To me the word "chuck" implies to throw without much intent to aim. Shooters aim, in both senses of the definition.

To me you chuck a rock in a lake to see how far you can throw it. You SHOOT a basketball.

Anyway, which term do you use?

Gunners have no conscience but can be efficient. KK is a gunner.

Chuckers just like to shoot because they think they are the team. WG and Nate Robinson are chuckers.

Chuck Person was a gunner- now go figure that out- but I guess that's why he was caller "The Rifleman" and not the Chuckster...

yeah i think of a gunner as a guy who gets GOOD shots off everytime he touches it. ala glen curry

a chucker is just that... he throws it up because its in his hands. he doesnt care whether its a smart shot based on the shot clock, defense, placement on the floor... he is just throwing that mother up there every time...

john starks had a little of both in him... id lean towards chucker though, especially after that disgraceful finals game

I consider a gunner for what you guys call both gunner and chucker. To me a gunner is a guy who shoots a lot. It can be someone who shoots a lot, even if they are good shots, but mainly it is just someone who doesn't pass and doesn't get his teammates involved.

For instance, JR Smith is a gun. He'll come in off the bench, get the ball on his first possession in and just fire up a 25 foot 3 with 12 seconds left on the shot clock. I consider that a gunner.

I personally find the term chucker highly offensive. Don't know why, just a pet peeve I guess.

It is an insult to call a player a chucker- but don't take it personally.
