All-Time 76ers

Post#1 » by BillyHoyle » Wed Aug 6, 2008 5:18 pm

if you could select an All-Time 76ers starting 5, (don't focus only on numbers but on "team-chemistry" as well), how would it look like?

PG: Iverson
SG: Dr. J
SF: Barkley
PF: Moses
C: Wilt

I know Iverson's not a true PG, and Dr. J is questionable at SG, but to make room for the others, I'd have this lineup.

Team-chemistry? How am I supposed to know if Iverson would get along with Wilt Chamberlain?

PG - Mo Cheeks
SG - AI
SF - Dr. J
PF - Moses
C - Wilt

I think the biggest argument is Chuck or Malone occupying the 4 spot.

PG - Cheeks
SG - Iverson
C - Wilt
SF - Dr J
PF - Barkley

Moses was never a PF in his life and never could play the PF spot. Also, as strictly a post player for the majority of his career, there isn't enough room for him and Wilt in the same lane.

Andre Toney would be the 6th man by the way.

Cheeks
Toney
Dr J
CB
Moses

Bench:
AI (he would be great in the Lou Williams role)
Bobby Jones (not the sloppy one)
Wlt (he wants to win the 6th man award, and it leaves more time to be with the ladies...)

Keep the 83 nucleus, and add in the otehr stars.

PG: Cheeks
SG: Greer
SF: Dr. J
PF: Chuck
C: Wilt

Key reserves: Moses, Toney, Bobby Jones

Probably something like that.

You might be right, but basketball-reference.com lists Moses as a F-C, so I bet he played PF at least at some point in his career.

I think Wilt/Moses would not suffer from match-up problems. Wilt was a track star, and probably could have been like a taller KG covering PF.

Yeah, the young version of Wilt could easily played the 4. The later in his career Lakers version of Wilt probably would only be able to play the 5.

Can't go wrong with any of the names mentioned. I would like to throw Billy Cunningham in as 6th man.

I guess the all time leading team scorer gets a spot on the roster.

Career numbers of 20/5/4 45%... sounds like someone we know- but I'm guessing he was better than today's embattled leader.

I don't know who Kangaroo Kid is, but i like him.

No room for Dolph Schayes on your bench?

76ers starting lineup:
PG-Maurice Cheeks(Calm, silent, makes the right plays)
SG-Allen Iverson(The greatest SG in the history of the sixers)
SF-Charles Barkley(One of the greatest forwards in a Sixers Uniform If not the greatest)
PF-Moses Malone(With his intensity and focus, he can grab any Allen Iverson miss and turn it into 2nd chance points).
C-Wilt Chamberlain(7'0 prolific center, possibly one of the greatest big men of all time)

Reserves:
SG/SF DR.J(I wanted to have a big frontcourt. But DR.J is just as good as Charles, and a nice dunker)
SG Andrew Toney(Mr. Pure scorer himself).
PG Andre Miller.(I don't recall that many Great PG'S in Philadelphia, but Miller is a replica of Cheeks)
C Samuel Dalembert(For all of his cluminess. He's tall and blocks shots and has somewhat of an offensive game).
PF Elton Brand(Classy guy, Philly guy and a dominater in the post)
SG Aaron Mckie(He deserves to be here, as one of our beloved 76ers)
C Dikembe Motombo(Ditto for this guy, DPOY the year we went to the NBA finals)

Final Rotation:
C:Chamberlain/Mutombo/Dalembert
PF:Moses/Brand/Barkley
SF:Barkley/ Dr.J
SG:Iverson/Toney/Dr.J
PG:Cheeks/Miller/Mckie

This team has size and scoring and good guards to distribute the ball. Possibly the one time I don't look dumb.

Pg-Cheeks
Sg-Iverson
Sf-Dr. J
Pf-Moses
C-Wilt

Reserves:

Barkley-PF
Chet Walker-F
Hal Greer-G
Andrew Toney-G
Bobby Jones-G/F
Dolph Schayes-C
Billy Cunningham-G/F

Coaches
Alex Hanum-Head Coach
Billy Cunningham-Player Coach
Larry Brown-Consultant

*There seems to not be enough mention of those 67 Sixers which might be the best team of all time...i had to leave Wali Jones off the list eventho he is a philly guy, from overbrook high and villanova...moses gets the starting nod over charles. in his prime, moses was a much much much better player than charles despite only lasting 4 years here. When looking back however, we've really lacked alot of quality bigs...barkley is too small to play the 5, and with the exception of moses and wilt, there isnt much that can play the 5 (altho they r two of the top 10 bigs of all time)...in lieu of that, I went with a real oldie in Dolph Schayes as my backup 5 seeing as how at 6' 8" he was a center in his time.
