Steve Mix maybe back w/ Sixers? Not how you think..

The 76ers are focusing on three former NBA big men as candidates to join the staff of head coach Maurice Cheeks. And two of them have significant ties to the organization.

A source familiar with the Sixers' plans to find a replacement for assistant Henry Bibby confirmed that Jeff Ruland would interview today for the position, and that Steve Mix would go through the process tomorrow.

Alton Lister, who spent last season as an assistant with the Atlanta Hawks, is also scheduled to interview sometime this week. Lister played 16 seasons with five different teams and previously coached at Mesa (Ariz.) Community College.

I kinda hope Mix gets the job, just because I've always liked Steve Mix. He knows the game and he's a good guy. I met him once.

Eh. Mix worked with the team during training camp in his final season as color commentator so he does have experience teaching alongside Mo. Hopefully he gets the job just so that I don't have to worry about Mix being the replacement if/WHEN Bob Salmi gets canned.

Ruland has more coaching experience, but Mix would be fine. Both were over achievers who really had to learn the game to make a contribution, although Ruland clearly had some talent. Alton Lister? That guy always seemed like he was the one who needed intensive coaching when he played.

In that same column...

I guess Tommy Mac will now go back to doing his awesome one-man show. Seriously, I hope there isn't a huge delay between the radio broadcast and CSN's HD Broadcast 'cause I plan on having my tv on mute this season. I simply can't take another season of Salmi.

Mix returning would definitely be an improvement over the Salmi-stator, but if they have him in mind for a coaching position I doubt he'd return to the booth soon.

Never liked Ruland - you had experience playing under him in Iona? He's coming back as a coach, not as a player. It's a matter of who would be better working with our young players. I would rather have Ruland, who has head coaching experience, and was a good post player and dirty defender when healthy and playing for Washington, working with Sammy, Speights, Smith and anyone else we bring in, than Mix. What qualifications exactly does Mix have to be an NBA coach - being a mediocre color commentator? Or a crappy back up swingman?

Does anyone know what happened to Henry Bibby. I missed that he wasn't coming back

Ruland and Moses on the same bench?!?

Too messed up omen-wise for me.

MUCH rather go with Mix.

Mix would probably be a good coach.

I didn't realize Moses was a full time assistant last season. I thought he was a consultant.

I thought Moses was out as a coach this year. Are they keeping him on as a consultant again or ...?

I really would like Steve Mix on the coaching staff. He knows the game. I remember when he was doing color, he sometimes taught the game on air. Giving good little tips like the ball usually bounces to the other side of the rim so you want to be that spot so you have a better chance for the rebound. If not on the coach staff at least back in the booth Salmi puts me to sleep, like it’s a baseball game or something. Salmi = Captain Obvious

Henry Bibby is still there, but is supposed to be leaving. Moses is not officially on the coaching staff right now. Ruland makes sense because we don't have anyone else coaching big men right now who has his type of experience.

Ruland makes no sense as the 76ers coach. This is the same Jeff Ruland who worked out Shawn Bradley and told Jimmy Lynam that the kid could play. Meanwhile, we lost out on Hardaway. Why would you want a washed up player in Jeff Ruland, who was out of the game for 6 years, minus a brief return to the 76ers to work out Bradley in the first place. Ruland brought the 76ers nothing but bad luck. Please keep him away from Philadelphia. :D :)
