Best of the Best: SF

Post#1 » by The Guilty Party » Sat Aug 16, 2008 5:03 pm

Things are slow and so I figured it's time for a fun thread. I've listed TEN players at the position in question in the poll above and your task is simple; pick the two who you think are the best.

I'll update the other positions every couple of days and by the end, we'll have the Sixers' Board All-NBA Team and Second Team based on how the voting turns out.

***********

While I fully expect LBJ to run away with the First-Team vote, I think the Second-Team vote could go in any number of ways. For me, it's going to be LBJ and Carmelo. I still think Anthony has amazing talent and would/could be one of the most dominant players in the game if he played under a different coach.

Hey, Dwyane Wade is spelled Dwyane Wade, spell it right or else.

LeBron and The Best Player in the World are my picks.

LeBron and Pierce.

Although if Melo could play some D, I would list him ahead of Pierce.

I picked LeBron and Pierce. Melo and Caron are a close 3rd and 4th for me.

I'd take Melo over Pierce 10 times out of 10, easily.

If Artest wasn't a headcase, I'd say he was the best on this list.

I put LBJ in the same no-D-means-no-GOAT vote from me. Dude needs to play defense consistanty and not just when the bright lights are on. Side note: dude's bigger than Boozer and faster than most PGs in the NBA, that's sick that he doesn't dominate both sides of the ball.

Butler, Prince, and PP would be my second team votes.

Pierce is a better defender and that's really it. He's not as good as he used to be. Carmelo is just a much better scorer and rebounder at this point in their careers. And, he has led his team to winning seasons in the West every year, which is something that Pierce just hasn't done except when he was handed this championship roster. And, he wasn't even that good in the playoffs, he had a few good games at clutch times and most people are just discounting the rest of those series.

The Nuggets get swept by a much better team and Pierce wins the championship with a loaded roster, and all of a sudden Pierce is better? I just don't buy that. Maybe if this was ~02 when Pierce was better IMO.

And how is Carmelo a much better scorer? Pierce's scoring role was heavily toned down and he isn't carrying the load for his team anymore. He's already proved that he's capable of scoring in volumes and putting in points in the same range as Anthony. I agree that Anthony is a better scorer because he's much more versatile and he's expanded his range, but being a better scorer doesn't cover for the fact that you don't play a lick of defense.

Yeah, and Boston sucked for the better part of his career when he put up those numbers. He's also never shot the high percentage that Anthony has as the first option for the last 3 years, and this is in the Western conference. When Pierce put up the raw numbers that Anthony has the past 3 years, Pierce was routinely a 44% or less player which Anthony dwarfs. 05-06 was Pierce's best scoring year that was high volume and he shot 47.1%, still worse than Anthony's last 3 seasons.

It's also arguable that Anthony is more clutch than Pierce, although it's tough to make that point after this postseason. And Pierce was extremely clutch in the ECF season with him and Walker, albeit the East was terrible then. But Anthony has hit as many big shots as almost anyone.

Well, I'm not saying he's not a bad defender, but it's hard to stand out on D when your entire team sucks at it as well. They are just flat out terrible and Camby is the most overrated defender I've ever seen. Nene is a pretty good man up defender but it ends there. Either way, I'm taking Anthony given a choice.

FG% doesn't mean anything. Pierce shoots more 3s then Melo, thus he shoots a lower percentage. If you look at TS%, Pierce shot 58.2% in that 05-06 year where he put up the high scoring numbers...better TS% then Melo has put up in any year during his career. Over their careers, Pierce has TS% of 56% and eFG% of 49.1%. Melo has TS% of 54.5% and eFG% of 47.9%. So if you are making an argument that Melo is a more efficient scorer, you are wrong.

Anthony shoots a higher percentage because he's one of the best post-up small forwards and his shots come from closer in the field, whereas Pierce utilizes a more perimeter-styled offensive game that involves more jump shooting. And while Anthony is the better scorer, Pierce's playmaking ability adds another dimension to his offensive skillset so it's much more than just Anthony trumping at scoring and Pierce trumping at defense.

You don't have to stand out or make a mark, but at least try playing defense. Anthony doesn't and cares more about how he's going to score on the next possession. Pierce plays defense, and is a good one at that. Give me the more complete player.

Fundamentally, Pierce.

Statistically LeBron.

Are you kidding me? LeBron played very good defense all last year. Sure he wasn't all out 100% of the time but when you're playing 42 minutes a game and are 90% of your teams offense you are going to have to rest at times. That being said, the bright lights are never off when your name is LeBron.

Did you watch LeBron James lately(i mean last couple of years) or you just talking according to your memories from 2004-2005? He must be the most underrated defender in the entire league.

Plus you would say Artest was the best if he wasn't a headcase???? Best?
