Best of the Past 20: SG

Post#1 » by The Guilty Party » Sat Aug 30, 2008 5:22 pm

You may or may not have noticed, but the Sixers are celebrating the franchise's 60 year anniversary this season (going back to the Syracuse days) hence they will be wearing the throwbacks uniforms more often and using the old red, white, and blue basketball logo as well. In honor of that.... I thought we could have some threads discussing some of the players of the past. Similar to the "Best of the Best" threads that I created a couple of weeks ago, I wanted to create threads to find out who we, the Sixers' Board, feel is the best player at each position in the Sixers' recent history. I say recent history (PAST 20 YEARS) because I believe a majority of posters have only had limited time to watch players pre-1988 play. So rather than discuss and vote on guys like Wilt, Hal Greer, Billy Cunningham, Dolph Shayes, and even someone like Andrew Toney.... these threads will only feature guys from the 1988-89 roster up to the upcoming roster.

The name of the game is simple.... there are five names of players at a certain position listed above so please vote for one and let's discuss why you think he's the best player at that position over the past 20 years.

*****************

With PG now in the books (Mo Cheeks was the winner), we can now move onto SG. I fully expect this vote to be extremely close (sarcasm) but it'll be interesting to see if anyone chooses Jeff Hornecek, Hersey Hawkins or Jerry Stackhouse over Iverson.

While my vote obviously goes to #3, this another position in which the Sixers have had some solid starters. I believe a "in their prime" Hersey Hawkins or Jeff Hornecek would be a perfect on the the current Sixers squad. Both of them the strong outside shooting that this team is currently lacking.

Had to chose Iverson but if I had to chose a player for this years team I would take Hawkins or Hornacek in the years they played for Phila. over Iverson. Both Hawkins and Hornacek are team players and would greatly add to the 2008-2009 team. Both Hawkins and Hornacek were great 3 Point shooters something that has been sorely lacking on the Sixers for quite a few years.

If anyone votes for anyone but AI..... No offense to those other guys, and I wasn't old enough to fully watch them at their times, but I don't think u can compare them to the impact that AI left on the legacy this franchise. AI without a doubt in my mind.

The real question here is who is number two behind Iverson. I think it was pretty clearly Hawkins. He was not really a true all-star, but he was a very good player with significant skills who contributed to reviving the team and was a part of the pretty good teams during the Barkley era. Stackhouse was a better player after he left, Hornacek was a nice player and WG is, well, WG.

I was a big fan of Hornecek and all, but I'd love to hear the reasoning for him having 1 vote in this. Anyone care to own up to this one?? :-)

Either that or a Jazz fan found his way over to this board and wanted to give "Horny" some love.

Iverson wins this in a run away. He's the only guy on that list who is a HOF and a perennial all-star.
