Your opinion on Maradona? Is he good or bad for soccer?

Post#1 » by HDMAVS760CA » Sat Jul 3, 2010 2:54 am

Diego Maradona is considered 1 of the best soccer players ever. But since the mid 90's, all you hear from Diego is negativity. He's most known for the hand of god play that won a game for Argentina. He played for them when they won the World Cup. But I heard in the 90's Diego tested positive for some substance, he might have gotten suspended for some stuff in the 2000's decade [can't remember] & recently said that if Argentina wins the world cup, he would run around the streets nude. Hardly hear anything good when Maradona's name comes up. Non Argentina fans can answer too, there's no wrong answer here. Is he a tired act, he can do no wrong, does he do good things nobody else sees? Do you like him? Or you can't stand him?

"This has gotten so fun that even Pele, the long-retired Brazilian star, has taken a side – and, not surprisingly, it’s against his rival Maradona, who just this month said Pele “should return to the museum.”"

Maradona is fun, he speaks his mind, he's not afraid of anyone and he is the greatest player to ever play. How can he be bad for soccer?

How can Maradona be bad for soccer? Remember when he shot an air-rifle outside his house?

And recently there was this:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog ... -world-cup

He's entertaining, in a Jose Mourinho on seroids (perhaps the wrong choice of words) way. He needs to be reigned in occassionally and told that there are barriers. He clearly believes he is above laws and rules which makes him scary yet entertaining.

He is a bit like watching Funniest Home Videos ... you know someone is gonna get hurt but it's the way it happens that keeps you hanging ...

I think he's good for the game, mainly because even though at his age he still has that desire and passion for football. He still wants to get involved.

But yeah I like him mainly because he doesn't care what other people think, he'll say and do what he wants, but like KJ7 said someone needs to tell him about boundaries.

That show was aired here 2-3 years ago. How did you guys put up with that garbage for so long?

The way all bad shows last a long time ... hot hostesses in skimpy clothing ... it really is a proven formula!

It's still on in Australia rather sadly. Not a fan of it but I think it works here cos we've got a lot of immigrants and the show doesn't exactly rely on its dialogue if you know what I mean.

Good for international soccer and good for the World Cup's entertainment value, but a disaster for Argentinian football. He sucks as coach. He's a great cheerleader though.

As for all his faults in the past, he's forgiven. It only adds to his legend frankly.

Inside the field ( as a player ) one of the best ever.
Outside the field (personal life and coaching) a disgrace.

He's one of the best things to ever happen to soccer, and pro sports in general.

I forgot when he recently ran over someones foot with his Mini and then proceeded to abuse *him* for "putting his foot there".

Can't wait to hear what he has to say about losing 4-0 to Germany ... maybe God doesn't love him anymore?

Being in the national spotlight is the only way he stays away from coke and alcohol while staying in reasonable shape and football needs some more colorful personalities like him and Mourinho who run their mouths without the politically correct BS.

Good for football but I'm not convinced he's the best option for Argentina.

Basically this.
The guy should've been dead a decade ago but here he is being a huge public figure again.

Maradona is one of the greatest humans that are still living. When he used to play and he was on top of his peak and he has money to blow. Yes he did drugs and stuff like that but the reason to behind that was he was feeding a family of 25 people and supporting other families. When he played for Napoli he would give money to random people after the matches, why because he saw how they lived, a lot of people think of the bad things when they talk about Maradona but Maradona is a great human-being and he changed Football he was the one that started doing all the tricks doing all the step-overs no one was doing that, Maradona is a great guy.

I love Diego, in fact my family has such an appreciation for him that my German mother was upset when she found out that Germany had won 4-0. He was a great player, is still a great human and is a dream from an entertainment perspective. I would love for him to stick around as Argentina's coach although his love for Higuain is killer. The biggest problem for Argentina is their lack of quality defenders, not Diego's coaching.

Bob Bradley is not amused.
