CKRT wrote:Where do I start? I usually only watch Soccer for the World Cup but I'm pretty interested in watching (more than casually) the sport now that the NBA is locked out. No idea where to start though, kind of overwhelmed with all the clubs and players.

I think I'd be a fan of Liverpool, if only for my girlfriend's godfather owning the club.

EDIT: forgot to mention, I live in the US and I can't stream games very well but I will try and see how well it works. I have Dish Network, but I'm not sure what packages they have for soccer coverage.

welcome.
i am new to the soccer boards here, also
but there is alot of information posted here that will keep you informed
espn3 has LOTS of games to watch
i feel like, to keep up with the games, ur gonna have to watch dvr'ed games and replays
u can always wake up sat and sun morning at 7am to watch live matches

"I think I'd be a fan of Liverpool, if only for my girlfriend's godfather owning the club."
if this is true, than this is a perfect place to start
u can learn the history and traditions of the club
and should also get you some points, with ur gf's godfather

i think alot of people try to follow teams from their heritage
if ur German u follow Bundesliga, Italian, Serie A (which i hate) and so on
differnt leagues, have different style of play

if you like watching the World Cup
try following the matches, to qualify for the World Cup
each region has its own tournament
Africa, Asia, North and Central America and Caribbean,
South America, Oceania, and Europe

I'd suggest you go to local indoor rink or recreation office and sign up for a team and start playing in a league. That is the best way, then you can really appreciate the game and you will enjoy it tons more. Grab a friend and go sign up somewhere. You will watch it for entertainment, competition, local support, (if you favor a local team), and also to learn something for yourself and again you will really want to watch it again latter after you get beat in your own game. ;)

Its kinda funny sometimes listening to the local sports radio stations and hear the host say something about soccer obviously showing they really know nothing about it and have never played or really watched the game more than a few here and there. It just makes them look ignorant. They need to play the game at least a season or two, then they would understand the game better. Nothing is learned faster than if you are literally experiencing it or have to teach it to someone else (or yourself).

Have fun!

to OP, Always nice to catch European soccer in the mornings, but if you live near a MLS soccer team, i highly recommend supporting them primarily. Nothing beats live soccer atmosphere. If you had fun watching the world cup, wait til you visit a MLS stadium.

Been to a few FC Dallas games, they were really cool atmosphere-wise but I had absolutely no idea what was going on in the field.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys! Definitely going to check out as much as I can. When is the soccer offseason?

Check out the MLS playoffs starting in a few days. I think you'll be a lot more impressed with the quality of the field now.
