They could have it improve a team's coefficient so that they have a higher chances of getting a more favorable draw in qualifying for their next tourney...

It has a place. Often it's a source of national pride and you get to see a home nation, or an underdog get one last hoo-rah before they go home or bow out of the tournament... Bulgaria '94, Korea '02, Germany '06 (Kahn started), Brazil '14.
