Group A scenarios for advancing:

Colombia: Has already qualified for the quarterfinals and will take top spot in Group A if United States does not beat Paraguay in the first game of the day. If the United States beats Paraguay, then Colombia must take at least a point against Costa Rica to finish top. (Winner of Group A plays the runner-up in Group B).

United States: Must beat Paraguay to ensure its place in the quarterfinals. However, a point will almost certainly be enough as Costa Rica would need to beat Colombia by a minimum of six goals to overtake the U.S. on goal difference if level on points. (Runner-up in Group A plays the winner of Group B)

Paraguay: Must beat United States to go into second place, and then hope Costa Rica does not win big vs. Colombia.

Costa Rica: Firstly, it will be eliminated if United States beats Paraguay. If United States draws, Costa Rica must beat Colombia by at least six goals. If Paraguay beats United States, then Costa Rica would need to win by at least four goals (if Paraguay wins by one goal). If Costa Rica and Paraguay were to finish with identical points and goal difference, lots will be drawn for second place (group game was 0-0).

US backline is as good as its been since Dolo and Bocanegra were back there.

Brooks is looking mighty impressive in this tournament, developed a lot since his poor Gold Cup. Probably some of it has to do with having Cameron and not the bum Alvarado

Fabra better watch his back. We all know what happened to the last Colombian to score on his own goal in a US-hosted tourney....

We won the Group! Wow...a lot of people thought we wouldn't advance. Seattle better bring it.

After that loss to colombia, it looked bleak. Glad we made it through. Still have to play a lot better if we want to make it past the next round.

Yep, that was the first soccer game I ever attended and I walked away completely pessimistic. Last two games were a lot of fun though, especially watching the US hold against Paraguay with only 10 guys throughout the second half.

If they were to lose, good chance they would be out. They would need Ecuador/Haiti to end in a draw or Haiti win, probably a slim chance that happens.

Well done by USA to win the group, avoiding Brazil is big, even if they aren't what they used to be

Group B

Brazil: Will already be through if Ecuador does not beat Haiti. If Ecuador wins against Haiti, then Brazil need a point against Peru to go through due to their superior goal difference with their opponents. If Ecuador has beaten Haiti by at least six goals, then Dunga's team could need to win the game to finish first. Brazil can only be eliminated if it loses to Peru and Ecuador beats Haiti.

Peru: Again, it will already be through if Ecuador has not won against Haiti. If Ecuador beats Haiti by two or more goals, then Peru must beat Brazil to qualify. If Ecuador beats Haiti by one goal, and Peru draws, then points and goal difference will be level -- it will then come down to goals scored and if that is still level second place would be decided by a drawing of lots as the group game between the two nations finished 2-2. A win for Peru would guarantee a place in the final eight no matter the score Ecuador wins by.

Ecuador: Must beat Haiti in the first game of the day, and will be guaranteed to progress if it wins by two goals. If it wins by one goal, then it must hope there is a winner between Brazil and Peru to be sure of going through, otherwise it could end up in a drawing of lots (see above).

Haiti: Has been eliminated.

Winner of Group B plays Colombia

Runner-up in Group B plays USA
