The facts:
- contract til 2016
- Tuchel wanted to get rid of him
- not a lot of clubs wanted him (Eintracht Frankfurt was basically Gala's only noteworthy competition for his services)
- Eintracht Frankfurt didn't want to pay any fee due to his high wages and short contract length
- he played terrible last season - don't know why (maybe he had motivational problems after riding the bench to win the WC)
- Dortmund played better as soon as he got injured in the 2nd half of the season last year
- recently he played and trained with Dortmund U23 team (4th league team)
- he scored an own goal for Dortmund U23 team
In short: there's no market for him.
dont buy there was no market for him. surely plenty of teams willing to spend more than million for a guy that was in world cup winning roster, for some depth if nothing else
Two additional points:
- The guy is a legend among Dortmund fans. Similar to Schweinsteiger's departure, teams don't insist on a high fee because they think they owe the player to make a move happen. Moreover, Großkreutz not playing causes a lot of unneccessary and disturbing media attention.
- Großkreutz is someone who heavily values the history and fanbase of a club, so I think he was not even interested in joining several teams that have asked for his services.
He is not among the technically most gifted players in Europe but I think you gonna love him because of what a hard worker he is and how he connects with fans. On a last note, he and Podolski have established a good relationship during the world cup, so having a friend on the team should benefit both as well as Gala.
