Messi wasn't going to be denied. Argentina weren't going to be denied. All-time great tournament, and an all-time great final.

Argentina dominated France for the first 80 minutes. Then Mbappe happened and Argentina looked like they were in complete shambles. Once the ET started, Argentina regained its composure and outplayed France to tie it up 3-3.

Anyway, I never cared about the whole "human rights" 'issue'. My problem was a tiny country with no history buying the tournament and burning so much cash on it.

Yeah they are filthy rich, and I think they spent like over 200 billion US Dollars on this tournament. Whereas, 2nd highest spender in history was Brazil with 14 billion.

They got the oil money, so I don't think they'll tank their whole economy like Greece did with their Olympic hosting.

I wish I went to this WC tbh since it was so tiny. I read that stadiums were less than an hour away from each other, so you didn't have to do long travels from city to city. Woulda been cool to catch massive amounts of games.

Also, I wish USA and Canada just got this next World Cup. And sometime in the future, Mexico got their own.

I think the French also knew they couldn’t win in penalties. They got their chances they didn’t convert . I thought the ref missed some fouls as France were
Pushing for a third in the last few minutes of regular time.

Two wrongs don't make a right. But historically, this is how FIFA operated. Let's not forget, Russia won the 2018 hosting in a joint bid with Qatar for 2022. And Russia was still able to host even though they invaded Ukraine/Crimea in 2014.

And there was lot of criticism about Germany and South Africa bribing their bids as well.

I honestly think Qatar was just willing to pay the most lol. If the FIFA host bids is just a bribe contest, can't blame them for spending their own money.

FBI really only arrested the fall guys. Sepp Blatter, Jack Warner, and Platini never got time and they were the ones really running things and allowing this corruption. Chuck Blazer died.

Anyways, I'd like to see England get the WC host. They were favored to win 2018 or 2022 with USA.

This is also the last FIFA WC with a perfect format imo.

I don't think 48 teams will last long. It's a weird number. I think it will last for two tournaments, then it will be a massive 64 team tournament. I definitely don't see them going back in the # of teams.

I remember I used to make these massive 64 team tournaments in the old FIFA video games lol. So it'll be interesting lol.

If it eventually gets to 64 teams... I'll be for it lol. I rather stick to 32. But 48 is just weird to me.

I would think 64 teams could just be x 2 what the format is now. Twice the teams, twice the groups, KO stage starts off with a round of 32.

Will leave the possibility of more intense match ups. Imagine if Israel made this World Cup?

What happens if Russia comes back (I heard they might start playing in the Asia Federation)?

Possible more Cinderella stories.

I always enjoyed watching underdogs like Costa Rica and even New Zealand in 2010 lol.

Like I said, I rather stick to 32. But I'm trying to be an optimistic. Belgium, Poland, Denmark, Serbia are European Teams that disappointed big time. If the tournament was bigger, maybe we could have had Italy, Sweden, or Turkey rise up to the occasion.

Same thing with Ecuador and Uruguay, Maybe Columbia and Chile could have rose to the occasion.

Not sure who will make it from Asia. But I'm guessing we'll see China and Iraq.

Can't decide if 2010 South Africa or 2022 Qatar was my favorite World Cup. But they are both in the top 2 for sure!

I really started watching in 2006. I remember 2002, but I was still a kid and I didn't have cable TV so I missed a lot of games.

It really was an incredible WC overall in terms of the quality of play. Would have been nice to see Argentina v. Brazil in the semis but other than that, just wow.

Messi and Mbappe taking over the final and both playing incredibly was just awesome to watch. That final was just so sick.

Fortunately I have a certain member muted as I'm not interested in getting into the politics of Qatar vs. Western countries or corrupt FIFA or whatever. And I knew with that person in this thread that the conversation would devolve to that.

The soccer was incredible to watch, period.

If you were lucky enough to listen to Peter Drury's commentary, it made the game that much more special.

If I had it my way... some things I wished that happened going into the KO stage.

I wish Uruguay advanced over South Korea. I think Uruguay would have given Brazil a better match up.

An Argentina-Brazil Semi Final, which was spoiled by Croatia who ended up just losing 3-0 to Argentina.

Mexico over Poland. Poland was straight up boring AF. At least we know Mexico wouldn't go down without a fight.

When it was 2-0, I really thought it was just destined for a boring finale. And I wished England or Portugal was in France's place. But man, what a surprise. Mbappe woulda had the best WC performance ever if France won. I know it was 2 PK goals, but to score both of them and still nail your 3rd in the shootout is tough if you ask me.
