Finally someone with knowledge. He went in there fully being aware of the opponent studs high. Maybe a soft red but definitely not a wrong decision.

If the ref wasn't standing right in front of him when he did it, he'd be hesitant to show the red card.

Perhaps the ref tried to get the message across by handing out a red card to stop all the endless fouling by both sides. Still a harsh decision nonetheless.
