In a dream season where all of their at least made it to the knockout stages. If just one stumbles early, like Sampdoria already have, then the situation changes. One more team going out before the round of 16 and italy matching last season's results without a title becomes impossible, no?

having 1 team in cl second round hardly a dream season. you get most points by getting into cl group stages and by advancing from group stages, not from europa knockouts. on the contrary it is buli is the one that got maxed last year by putting 4 teams in second round and unlikely to replicate itself.

If that's the case then fair enough. I'm not sure on the way points are distributed at the moment, but I'll double-check in the morning. As that doesn't sound right...though it may well be...but I was under the impression that the gap between the points from CL results and from EL results was significantly less than you'd expect; almost the inverse of how the reward money is handed out.

you get 4 points for every group stage team and 4 points every time they advance from groups. you get 1 point for every knockout round i think, so juve can go out in second round and italy would still have more points just by having roma or lazio in groups or second round.

They already did and Salzburg is pretty much just a farm team of Leipzig these days.
I mean, even their fans are chanting f*** RB Leipzig during games.

So looked it up and it's actually 5 points for advancing to the round of 16 in the CL, not 4; which is the big difference between the EL and CL. As, due to the extended qualifying for the EL, teams actually get nearly as many points for making the group stages in both competitions; and you get 2 points for a win in the groups stages and beyond in both competitions, with 1 more point coming for making the QF/SF/final.

So if Lazio losses to Bayer here, then the BuLi pretty much guarantees a stronger season than Italy as Serie A will have just 2 clubs capable of getting that CL-knockout stage bonus vs the 4 BuLi clubs who'd still have a shot at those points.

Anyway, rooting for Astana, Partizan, Basel, Malmo and Zagreb in the Champions Route; and Brugge, ZSKA, and Shaktar in the League Route. I can't tell yet whether my dislike of Bayer will be greater than my cheering for the BuLi, and both Valancia and Monaco have some really interesting young talents that I'd like to watch in the CL, so I can't make my mind up in that tie either.

Wut?
Would rather have Celtic in even if that would be another team with a higher coefficient then Gladbach.

BTW: That draw also shows how important reaching third place was for Gladbach. Given our luck in draws we would've most likely gotten Man United...

Malmo's hockey team is responsible for developing some of my favorite non-Forsberg swedish players...if Modo ever has a soccer club in europe I'm done and will only root for them because of hockey and how much I loved Foppa.

wrong, it is 4 points. http://www.uefa.com/memberassociations/news/newsid=1592815.html

and lazio's unlikely loss doesnt guarantee anything but keep betting on germany getting through with 4 teams again even with 2 of them essentially locked in pot 4, that avatar tells me you going with your gut is better for the amusement of this board.

how could you hope for brugge instead of one of the biggest brands in the world? it is a shame united has to play such scrub clubs to qualify, if anything they should be automatically placed in semi finals because of their name recognition.
