The midfield names that I've heard us linked to most lately (Firmino and another young kid whose name I can't remember) are attacking central midfielders, when we'd heard before the end of last season that we'd be looking for a defensive midfielder to help reduce Carrick's minutes and eventually replace him. I'm wondering which defensive midfielders you guys have heard us linked to, which ones are actually likely to come here, and which guys you want most?

Any of you guys have a link to Dwight Yorke's goal in the legends game against Bayern by chance?

So apparently we're expecting to lock up Schneiderlin within the next few days, and are getting close to signing at least one of Otamendi and Matteo Darmian.

Looks like Darmian is done.

Darmian is the perfect player in Van Gaal's 3-5-2.
Dirk Nowitzki, Steve Nash, Kevin Garnett, Toni Kroos, Pep Guardiola, Ernst Happel, Joachim Löw.

3-5-2?

Weren't we going with a 4-5-1 last year?

Now Darmian's manager at Torino has confirmed that Damian is coming to United. I'm pretty happy with this news... now lets lock up Schneiderlin and Otamendi quickly!

Nice! I liked Valencia's pace from right back but he was a liability defensively, same with Rafael.

I'm with you there. I'm not sure where this move leaves Valencia now... maybe he sticks around as a sort of utility reserve who can back-up RB and midfield positions?

I'm guessing he will mostly back up Mata on the right or if they move Mata to a central attacking position for some games, they can use Valencia on the right.

With champions league back on the schedule, they'll have quite a few games and could use some quality depth like Valencia. Unless of course Valencia has no interest being a reserve, but he doesn't strike me as that type of player.

So if you have Valencia backing up Mata on the right and replacing him when he moves into the centre, where do you fit in Di Maria, Januzaj, etc?

Dont think Schweinsteiger wont move to Man Utd but if he does + Schneiderlin how in the world will you lot line up?

De Gea
Darmian - Smalling - Otamendi - Shaw
Schweinsteiger - Schneiderlin - Herrera
Mata - Di Maria
Rooney

A weird 4-3-2-1. But how can you leave Carrick out.
Dirk Nowitzki, Steve Nash, Kevin Garnett, Toni Kroos, Pep Guardiola, Ernst Happel, Joachim Löw.

I'll wait a bit before I attempt any formations because I'm still expecting some players to get shipped out as well as some new blood coming in.

They definitely need another striker or two after van Persie and Falcao have left. They still own the rights to Chicharito but no idea if he would be returning. Do they believe Wilson is ready for a larger role?

Do they use Mata and/or Di Maria in an attacking midfield role or keep them on the wing? Ashley Young really found his game at the end of the season and was their best attacker on the left. Then you have Depay, Januzaj, Valencia who can all play the wing as well.

In the middle you already have Herrera and Fellaini in attacking roles and I felt the team was at their best with those two on the pitch.

Carrick is returning but LVG seems to trust Blind quite a bit, and this was the one position LVG mentioned he would like to upgrade in the transfer window.

Still a lot of moving parts imo

I'm with Brew on this. There's still more players to go and more to come in before we can even begin to create line-ups. It's like trying to guess what a building will look like while you're watching them pour the foundations.

So we have Memphis, Darmian and Bastian signed, and I'm hearing that Schneiderlin has agreed and taken his medical, and is expected to be announced as an official signing very soon. Then we've supposedly given Real Madrid about 24 hours to make an acceptable offer for De Gea or he's staying here next season. If we can go into next season with Memphis, Darmian, Bastian, Schneiderlin and a striker, while keeping De Gea, then that's a massive haul for us.

Looks like Di Maria may head out too. If he does, i'd like for our lineup to look like this, assuming De Gea stays one more year
De Gea
Darmian Smalling New Cb/Jones Shaw
Herrera Morgan Bastian
Mata Depay
Rooney

Don't think lvg will start herrara and mata together. Looking at the middle, United might be the slowest and unathletic in the world with that....
